Chapter 10
Soph didn't realize how fast the day went.
She sat on her chair, crayon in hand while drawing whatever came to mind. she completely has forgotten about the dream she had in the morning within a few hours.
She looked up to glance her bedroom window, looking at the sunset that was displayed on the sky. the bird chirped as it hopped over to her window, getting a full view on the sunset. Soph smiled and walked over to the window, ignoring her drawing that was incomplete.
Not that she cared if it was incomplete.
She could finally make out the details of the sunset now that she was closer to the window. night was slowly coming as she could see the darker colors in the sky.
"Birdy, this is my favorite time of day!" she exclaimed to the bird, who only chirped in reply. it hopped toward Soph's hand, which she gladly opened so it could set it's feet on her palm. she looked down at the bird and her smile only grew wider and looked back to the window, taking note of how the darker colors were dominating the light ones, meaning that the sun is now disappearing.
"Isn't it nice to see the sun set?" Soph asked, knowing full well that the bird won't answer but that wasn't important to her at the moment. "Papa would bring me outside to see the sunset and we'd talk. a bunch." she felt the bird hop around to turn and face her, being all quiet as if it was listening to her.
"..I wonder where Papa is now." she tilted her head to the side, still staring at the window. silence filled her bedroom, like if there was no one in the room but her. "I hope Papa is looking at the sunset." she sighed, breaking the silence. "I wouldn't want him to miss it. he says he likes the sunset." she swallowed hard and the bird chirped softly.
A strange feeling came over as she continued staring. the feeling tickled her hands, before it went to her throat, making it all dry. the feeling was kind of overwhelming and she let out a sigh, walking away from the window and sat on her bed, letting the bird go while the feeling was still being present.
She never felt this before. this strange overwhelming feeling. she started to lay down, cuddling onto the pillow. her upper lip started to quiver and she felt the need to let out a cry. did she miss them that much? no, it must be normal, no child wouldn't miss their parents without feeling the need to hear their voices.
To feel them.
To see them.
Without even realizing, tears were already falling down, soaking her pillow. she let out a choked sob, curling into a ball as sobs shook her whole body. she tried to keep her sobs quiet so nobody would hear. honestly, it worked, she kept her eyes closed, letting the remaining tears fall. this.. was too overwhelming.
Well, the feeling was still there. her throat started to ache from her choked sobs. it might be a little early but maybe she can take a nap, to escape reality and the feeling as well.
Just a small nap.
---------------------------------
She opened her eyes and found a white rose in her hand, starting to wilt. she quickly sat up, panic starting to take over. she gently ran her thumb on one of the petals, walking around to find the perfect spot to set the rose down and grow some more.
..How exactly will she do that?
It isn't possible to just grow one out of the blue. she needs a seed, but she isn't sure if roses start as seeds. gardening was never really something she was passionate about. Soph finally found the perfect spot and gently placed the flower there, touching it's soft petal one last time before beginning her search for a seed.
A seed to start growing a rose.
Soph searched in patches of grass, near trees, and where the flowers grew. she even looked where the dead flowers were. she thought that the patch of dead flowers could probably hold seeds for roses.
However, she didn't find any seeds. there were none in sight. Soph sigh sadly, knowing that her rose is most likely going to have the same fate as these flowers.
Suddenly, a realization hit her.
This is a dream. if I wish hard enough, the seeds could just show up right in front of me..!
Soph got onto her knees and closed her, the image of the packet of seeds remained in her head throughout the entire time she kept her eyes closed. she squeezed her eyes tighter, clutching her fist as well.
Her head was starting to hurt for how hard she was squeezing her eyes but despite the pain, she continued, focusing on wishing for that pack of seeds. she suddenly heard something land in front of her, causing her to open her eyes. blurred dots of color started to cloud her vision, but the dots disappear as soon as they appeared.
Soph looked down and her eyes landed on a pack of seeds, with a picture of a rose on the front. she quickly grabbed it and smiled widely, getting up onto her feet and ran towards where she has left the white rose.
She slowed down once she saw the wilting white rose in the distance. however, there was only one problem. the rose on the picture of the seed packet was red.. her rose was white. Soph sighed harshly.
"Why didn't I wish for a white one..?" she whispered underneath her breath. but it was something, and she wasn't gonna let this seed packet go to waste. she went near the white rose, carefully moved it out of the way and started to dig a small hole with her bare hands.
It was messy, sure, and she was positive that she felt dirt go underneath nails but she didn't care one bit. she opened the packet and picked out one seed, she took a good look at it before dropping it in the hole and covering it back up with dirt.
Now, all she needs is water but where will she get that? there's no river in sight or nearby. Soph surely didn't want to wish again. it hurt her head too much but what choice does she have? she's too afraid to exit the field, even if this is just a dream.
Soph sighed and slowly went onto her knees, taking a deep breath and closed her eyes. she relaxed her hands and listened to her breathing. perhaps she didn't have to wish hard enough. maybe if she wished with no force, a bottle of water will appear.
The image of water appeared in her mind and she focused on it. this time, however, she wouldn't squeeze her eyes forcefully or clutch her hands into fists. soon enough, she heard something being placed right in front of her and she opened her eyes.
There it was, a bottle of water. she smiled and grabbed, unscrewing the cap right off the plastic bottle. she moved a bit closer towards the bump on the ground and poured water on it, making sure that she didn't pour too much.
Once she was done, she put the cap back on the bottle and waited. Soph knew that these things would take time but she wanted to watch the seed sprout into a rose. she didn't care if it was gonna be a red one, the red ones are just as pretty.
She turned her head to face the wilting white rose. she grabbed it and stared at it, quite sad that it's beauty will disappear soon. Soph laid on the ground, pretty sure that she was gonna get her hair messy but she didn't care.
Soph stared at the white rose with a smile, caressing the petal with her thumb. she set it down next to her and stared at the sky, the moon shining upon her. the wind felt nice against her skin, causing her to close her eyes and take a deep breath.
Suddenly, it all went black.
-----------------------------------
Soph woke up on her bed, hair messy. her eyes started to adjust to the dark as she realized that it was dark out. since there was no light anywhere, everyone must have gone to sleep. she had a blanket on top of her to keep her warm.
She sighed and turned her head towards the nightstand, opening them to a water bottle and a pack of seeds right next to it. she immediately sat up and grabbed the water bottle, getting a good look at it in the dark.
How?
Did she already have a water bottle and seeds? did Demo leave them here as a gift? she went with the second reason and set the bottle down. she grabbed the seed packet and took a good look at it. while it wasn't roses, it was sunflower seeds instead. the packet had her name written in sharpie, in Demo's hand writing, she assumed.
She set the packet down next to the water bottle and sighed. it was still nighttime and she didn't want to go the rest of the night without sleeping.
So, she closed her eyes and went to sleep. however, she didn't dream. she didn't wake up at the beautiful field.
She slept a dreamless sleep.
