Chapter 8: Babe

Her lips on your neck
I can't unsee it
I hate that because of you, I can't love you
Babe
What a shame
Didn't want to be the one that got away
How could you do this, babe?

Trigger warning for kidnapping and drug mentions!

Natasha should have been home when Yelena got there.

Yelena had called her five times, and every one of those calls had gone to voicemail.

Finally, there was a knock on the door.

Yelena opened it "Where were you? Сука, и—"

"Hello."

"You're not Natasha."

"No." Sylvie shook her head. "But I think I know where she is."

"Where? Wait−how?"

"It's a long story," Sylvie said. "I may have done some things that were...a bad idea. But the important thing is, I know where your sister is."

"My god, Sylvie−where?"

"She's being held captive by a mob boss."

Kate closed her computer with a sigh. Lucky leaned his head against her, brown eyes wide.

"Must be nice to be a dog," Kate mused. "No worries...no school..."

Lucky licked her face.

The doorbell rang. Kate heaved herself to her feet and opened it. "Mom?"

It wasn't her mom.

Instead, it was Sylvie and Yelena.

Kate met Yelena's eyes and Yelena started to say something.

"Nope. Not doing this right now." Kate closed the door. Sylvie slipped her foot inside before it closed. "Seriously?"

"You don't have to talk to Yelena," Sylvie said. "I need to talk to you about your mom."

"What about her?" Kate asked, easing the door open.

"Well, where is she?"

"At work."

"Are you sure?" Sylvie asked gently.

"Yes. Where else would she be?"

Sylvie and Yelena shared a look.

"Don't look at each other!" Kate snapped. She winced, realizing how ridiculous that sounded. "I mean−fuck. Where to you think my mom is?"

"I don't really know how to tell you this," Sylvie said. "So I'm just going to have to be harsh about it. She's working for the organization that kidnapped Yelena's sister and her boyfriend."

"My mom kidnapped Natasha and Bucky?"

"What? No, where'd you get Bucky from?" Sylvie asked.

"You said she kidnapped Yelena's boyfriend!"

Sylvie glared at Yelena. "I meant Natasha and her boyfriend."

"And Bucky's not my boyfriend," Yelena cut in.

"You kissed him!"
"Yeah, well—"

"We don't have time for this!" Sylvie snapped. "Kate, your mom didn't kidnap anyone personally. The Kingpin and the other drug dealers she works with did."

"My mom works with drug dealers?!"

"Don't panic!"

"My mom's working with a Kingpin, who runs a drug organization that kidnaps people−what reason would I have to panic?" Kate heard her own voice start to grow hysterical.

Yelena touched her shoulder. "Kate—"

Kate shrugged her hand off. "Don't touch me." She looked at Sylvie. "Wait−how did you know about my mom?"

Sylvie bit her lip. "Well..."

Kate raised her eyebrows. "You work for them?"

Sylvie glared at her. "It may surprise you to learn this, but some of us don't have rich moms!"

Kate raised her hands in surrender. "Right. Sorry. Um, do you...uh, do you have a plan to deal with this situation?"

Sylvie shrugged. "We just needed to check if your mom was home. You don't have to come with us."

"Where are you going?"

"To break into Kingpin's HQ and get Natasha back," Yelena snapped. "You're really slowing this conversation down, Kate Bishop."

"Oh really? Well, excuse me for not understanding completely when a girl I've barely met−sorry, Sylvie−and a girl who kissed me, refused to acknowledge that she kissed me, and then kissed someone else show up on my door and tell me that my mom is a fucking drug dealer!"

Yelena took a step back as if Kate had hit her. "Kate Bishop, I..."

"We don't have time for this," Sylvie reminded her. "Kate, stay out of it."

"No," Kate protested. "I wanna help, Natasha's my friend."

Yelena shook her head. "We are infiltrating a drug dealer's headquarters and you can't fight for shit."

"That's not true," Kate snapped defensively. "I'm tougher than you think."

"Oh really? Well—"

"Stop it," Sylvie interjected. "You're both acting like children."

Kate and Yelena fell silent instantly at the rebuke. "We don't have all day," Sylvie said. "Let's get going."

Kate nodded. "Should I, like, take anything with me?" Both Sylvie and Yelena stared at her. Kate shrugged. "I've never infiltrated a drug dealer's headquarters before!"

***

Sylvie led Kate and Yelena to an old Toys-R-Us store. The paint was peeling on the sign, but Kate could see a light on in one of the upper windows.

"This is a little cliché," she muttered. The gathering dusk made the place seem even creepier. "I mean, could they make it any creepier?"

"There could be heads mounted on the outside, dripping blood down the walls," Yelena commented. Kate almost laughed at her casual gruesomeness, but stopped after remembering that she wasn't supposed to be talking to her.

"Shh," Sylvie said.

"Do we have a plan?" Kate hissed back.

"Sort of. Now shut up."

Sylvie pulled out her phone and called someone in her contacts list. "Loki?"

Kate and Yelena exchanged a glance. "You're calling your partner? Now?" Yelena asked. Sylvie scowled at her and mouthed Shut up.

"You're okay? Alright, where are you?" Sylvie asked. She nodded after a minute. "Alright, stay there. Don't move. I'm dealing with this." She hung up.

"Didn't Mr. Coulson used to be a police officer?" Yelena asked. "Try calling him."

Sylvie shrugged. "Okay."

After a few minutes, she hung up. "He'll be here in a bit."

"So, what's the plan?" Kate asked.

"First of all, Yelena's going to call Kingpin," Sylvie said. "Yelena, give me your phone so I can put in his number. You're going to describe the exact address and threaten to blow up the building if he doesn't put Natasha on the phone. Say hi to her or whatever and then give me the phone."

"How come Yelena gets to do it?" Kate complained.

Sylvie rolled her eyes. "Because he'll recognize my voice, and sorry Kate, but Yelena has a scarier voice than you."

"That's just because she has a Russian accent," Kate grumbled.

"You love my accent," Yelena protested.

Kate felt her face heat up, because yes, she loved Yelena's accent. It was really fucking hot, too. But also, Yelena had absolutely no right to say things like that after the Bucky incident.

"Aww, you're blushing," Yelena teased.

Kate glared at her. "Stop."

Sylvie shook her head. "Cut it out. Yelena, your phone."

Yelena handed over the phone to Sylvie, who dialed a number and quickly handed it back to Yelena.

"What if he doesn't pick up?" Kate whispered.

"He will," Sylvie hissed back.

He did. Kate was so on edge that she jumped when she heard Yelena say, "Hello, Kingpin." After a second, she added, "That's my business. Listen to me. You are at 130 Avengers Avenue, in an old Toys-R-Us store. We have several high-scale weapons pointed at the building right now. Give the phone to Romanoff or we'll fire on the building. Killing you and everyone else inside."

It wasn't even the words she was saying that were terrifying. It was the cold, emotionless way she spoke. Kate was scared, and she wasn't even the one Yelena was talking to.

"Yes, I thought you might see things my way," Yelena said. "Give her the phone."

After a second, Yelena smiled. "They cannot hear me? I'm not on speaker?"

Evidently Natasha said no, because Yelena said, "Listen, I am here with Sylvie and Kate. I−what, no. Natasha, don't be—" She glared at Kate and Sylvie for a moment before resuming the conversation, this time in Russian. "Она, черт возьми, меня ненавидит." Pause. "That's not the point. She has every reason to. I'm also not talking about this with you right now. We have a plan. Well, Sylvie has a plan. Which is why I'm giving Sylvie the phone."
"Put it on speaker," Sylvie whispered.

"Okay, Natasha, I'm putting you on speaker," Yelena said. "So don't say anything stupid. Including Sylvie's name."

She pressed the speaker button, so they could all hear Natasha's response. "I won't, don't worry. Hi, Kate."

"Hi!" Kate said.

"Hello," Sylvie offered. "Listen. I have a plan. Where are you?"

"I'm−wait, shit, don't say anything—"

A loud rustling noise came from the phone as it changed hands. Kate held her breath.

"Sylvie." The voice was deep and amused. "I thought we had a deal."

A/N *evil laugh* cliffhangers! I love them.

Also, this may be the last chapter I publish before I go to camp. So, if I don't update for a while, that's why.
There's a chance I'll decide to speed-write a chapter, but I probably won't have time.
