I've Just Seen a Face-9

Karma

It was a new year and I was yet to celebrate. I missed George and Patties New Year's party as I was too depressed to make an effort and turn up. He thought I had gone out on a date until I slipped up a few weeks later.

"You did what!" George stormed into the kitchen of Friar Park, his and Patties new home, yes New Year's Eve was their house warming party as well.

"George settle down its ok" Pattie shifted into a mediator role seeing that I was now in the quicksand of a lie. "I'm sure Kasey would have come if she could have" Pattie held my hand giving me a squeeze. Her yellow dress seemed too cheery for my visit to turn in this direction but you can't really colour code conversations.

"She said she was busy...." George was seated opposite me now, calmed a tad, but still shaking his head "What is the matter I thought you were doing great- good job, that bloke what's his name?" He tipped my chin up a little and held my gaze til I dropped my head on my folded arms on the table, bawling into my long sleeve blouse. "Truth now Kasandra you can't lie to me face I will tell"

Pattie got up and put the kettle on and sat back down. I still wouldn't look at my friend, I was such a dunce in life and now I had lied to him. The one person he could trust, I was his confidant as he said many a times, I had let him down badly. Him calling me by my full name only showed how much I had riled him.

"There is no what's his name, hasn't been since before you two got married."

"And....." I looked up he wasn't sure but he prodded to check I had said it all. "And there's more isn't there! Where WERE you New Year's then?"

I shook my head I didn't want to say. Then I saw the pain in his face; pain for me, I didn't deserve it. I blurted it all the ugliness spilling out "I was in my room with a cast of the finest crap wine and a bottle of scotch. I finished the scotch, got half way through the wine" Pattie gave me a hug as I stood, I needed some air. The kettle was boiled the whistle blasted out, piercing the silence Georges angry silence, I daren't look him in the eye.

Outside in the garden I let my fingers trail over the flowers that were a little too early to bloom. A couple of days of warmish weather had tricked them into showing their faces.

I had spiralled so badly downwards I wasn't sure I should even be associated with George I could hurt his career. Visions of newspaper articles tumbled through me..

Maybe go home to Liverpool start all over again, new job new life. Reset the clock. The wind blew and I walked further, so far I met the front gate, then swinging to the right I circled back round the house.

George walked up behind me and grasped my shoulder gentle, spinning me round into his big bear hug, I clung to him like he would run away.

"I couldn't find you, you scared me........... I've decided something" George whispered into my ear. "You, young lady are coming with Pattie and I, a little holiday, if you will. It will be good to get you out of this dreadful weather, get some sunshine, take some time to get you better. And I will not take NO for an answer this time" He squeezed me close to him again "Alright!" He wasn't taking no for an answer, shaking me to return his gaze.

I leaned back a bit and the guilt plain to see in my eyes "I'm so sorry George. I should have been truthful with you, my friend"

"I should have been there. Not all over the place, ignoring the ones I love most" George gave me another hug and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Any way my turn to save you, miss!"

"YOU do give the best hugs" I whispered in his ear as he laughed.

George will save me.
