A/N:- Starting developing of this. Hope you'll enjoy.
~Developing after the ending~
It was October, that time of the year when I love travelling most I was going to Dehra and then to Mussoorie. The same way I used to before, but now I don't have to bother any other relatives at the station to take my charge. Things have been very different after my operation....
I can see now do with the help of glasses everything has become much more easier for me especially travelling. I can travel now any part of the world without anyone's help but my favourite place still remains in hills. This pristine beauty and silence attract me the most.
I travel a lot nowadays as it helps in keeping up with my intellectual and creative endeavours. As I'm a writer now travelling both inspires me and also serves as a break from the monotony. So here I am travelling again to my favourite hill station by train. It was 11 in the morning and the train was about to reach Rohana. My compartment was empty and I had it all to myself Rohana where a young beautiful lady got in.
She had a very pretty face and lovely eyes. I always notice a person's eyes when I'm looking at someone. I could attach to the importance of eyes from the day I got my eyesight back. I thought they were the most important organs of the body but I knew I was wrong as all as the organs of the body are equally important but just because I got to see everything so late, my eyes become extra special for me and so now I always notice the eyes when I'm looking at someone.
But looking at this lady's eyes made me sad because though lovely, they're of no use. She's totally blind. I was having cold for the last few days and so just after she settled down at the seat I sneezed twice which startled her. I excused myself and apologized for startling her. She was quite friendly and started a conversation soon.
"Where are you going?", she asked. "To Dehra and then to Mussoorie". "Oh! That is just wonderful. I love the hills". "Where are you going?" "To Saharanpur. My aunt lives there and I teach in a small Blind School there. I visit my parents in the weekends and stay at the Saharanpur for the weekends. What do you do?" "I'm a writer. I write Novellas". "Wow! that is a very exciting profession". "What's so exciting in being a writer? This is not a kind of sport adventure that one can remain excited about".
"Well! that is the most interesting part about being a writer. You can become so many things and feel so many emotions without physically experiencing anything. Isn't that exciting?"
I was amazed at her words. Every other person I meet always talk about the theme of the money I earn from my profession. No one has ever talk like this to me before. Her simplicity and childish excitement left me in wonder.
"Even your work is very exciting, teaching and interacting with so many children". "Oh yes! of course. They are a fresh breath of air. They always make me happy and aware of the beauty and colours that life has to offer".
I was taken aback by her wholeheartedness. Even after being blind she seemed totally at peace and love with her world. No grudge against anyone or anything. No regret whatsoever. I went to the days when I didn't have side. Sometimes I felt so angry and regretted my living. Felt what a worthless life it was to be unable to witness the world. What a big difference between me and her way of thinking!
I sneezed again. "You seem to have caught a bad cold", said she. "Yes, for the last few days this cold is troubling me a lot. I don't have taste, can't smell anything. It's horrible. It's just the excitement of travelling that beeps me going". "I can understand. Even I suffer from such bad cold pretty often. What do you see outside?"
Suddenly this question struck me like thunder. I travelled back 5 years in time. I was on the same train on my way to Mussoorie. And I had this unusual travel companion. She had a lovely voice. Both of us acted throughout the train we were together to have normal eyesight but later on I realised from my next co-traveller that she was completely blind. I open contemplated later as to what happened to her, whether she had a surgery later on and got her eyesight back.
I truly remembered her the day I got my eyesight back. I remembered her because our encounter was one of the most unusual one I ever had. Both of us were blind but still wanted to hide that fact from each other. Sometimes I think how childish we were.
"What do you see outside?", she asked again. "Trees, telegraph posts". "And?" "The deep horizon, the earth and sometimes a few people. The next stop is Saharanpur. Your station". I sneezed again as a finished the words. "You must really be feeling troubled with this cold and sneezing. Here take my inhaler and breath in. You'll feel much relieved".
The train started getting ready to depart. I thanked her and breathed in from the inhaler. The moment I took the inhaler out of my nose I smelled the sweet perfume which came from my companion's hair. It was the exact tantalizing smell of the perfume which belonged to the blind companion of mine 5 years ago in the same train.
