Phase 2
"Hey, so I just came from the IT department and the CEO tab is up and running, whoopee."Grace says, walking into the office and dumping her stuff on the chair. "Isn't that great news?"
Grace's pale brown eyes meet his as they slowly narrow.
"You didn't knock."He says, turning onto the next page of the file in his hands.
"I didn't." Grace mutters, glancing at the door. "Sorry, guess I was a little excited."
Mr.Maxwell shakes his head as he glances at something on his laptop.
"So, I thought maybe we could discuss phase 2." Grace mutters, sitting in one of the chairs, her work binder already open.
"Phase 2?" He sighs. "I thought we were already done."
"Nope, far from it."
Grace opens the file to the second page, where she had neatly written out the plans for the next few days, there was just one missing piece and she hoped he might be able to find it.
"I think it would be beneficial if you created a timeline for this project of yours."
"Timeline? Never." Grace snorts. "If I did that, I would just be helping you find 100 ways to get out of what I need you to do. It's better if I know what's happening and you kind of go along. Don't worry I am speaking with your secretary so that things don't clash."
"You know what? Fine, just tell me what phase 2 is?" He mumbles, pushing back a lock of his hair.
"Well, it's simple."
Grace stops when the door slowly opens and Maxwell's secretary walks in with a black tray.
"I thought this would help." The girl mutters, gently placing the tray on the table.
"Aw, thank you." Grace coos, eyeing the large Cafe Latte and chocolate treats. "You're the only reason that I come here."
The girl let's out a giggle but quickly stops when her eyes meet his.
"Enjoy." She mumbles rushing out the door.
"Isn't this so sweet." Grace says, grabbing a golden wrapped treat.
"No it's not." Maxwell says, his jaw tightly clenched. "We're supposed to be working not throwing a tea party."
"Treats help with creativity, Vincent." Grace says, popping the chocolate into her mouth; softly moaning. "Yeah, this is good."
Maxwell only lifts his brow at her and reaches for the cup of black coffee.
"You were saying?" He says.
Grace shoots him a confused look, as she takes another chocolate.
"Phase 2, we were taking about phase 2." He complains, giving the chocolates a dirty look.
"Oh yes." Grace grumbles, quickly chewing the chocolate and licking her fingers.
"Phase 2, I call The Visit."
"The Visit?"
"No, The Visit." Grace says, pushing her voice lower. "You have to say it with a deep voice or the whole thing just sounds dumb."
"Okay, whatever you say." He says, sipping some his coffee. "What are we doing then?"
"This phase is all about publicity, getting you name and face out there. So, we choose one of your most popular hotels and do a quick check." Grace says, quickly glancing at her binder. "So, you walk in, talk to some of the guests and employees, look at some of the rooms and have quick drink at the bar Andrew walk out. Maybe you should shake hands with the hotel manager too. Yes, I'll organise that."
Grace takes out her pink Typo pen and quickly writes in the new idea.
"You expect me to actually do this, don't you?" He says, his head tilted. "That's funny."
"Why not?" Grace whines, dropping the pen onto the table. "Why does everything have to be so difficult with you? Can't you just say, 'yes, Grace the great, I agree, let's go with your idea?'
"Look the branch visit is good, it shows you care about your other divisions. It shows that you're actively involved in your business outside the actual business. It also leaves a good impression on your employees; it motivates them to work harder and more efficiently because, look, their boss actually gives a flying pig. You might work hard but nobody sees it because you've hidden yourself in this basement, for all they know you could be playing pool and smoking cigars down here."
A long, heavy silences stretches over the two. Maxwell's eyes stay trained on the bookshelf seated on the other side of the room.
"Fine, which hotel?" He finally asks.
Yes!
"Well, that's why I need your help." Grace answers. "Which one of your hotels get the most attention?"
"Well, the one in Las Vegas rakes up the most revenue, I think that would work."
"No, it's not about money, its about people. The Las Vegas one might make more money but that doesn't mean more people are coming in, it could just mean that, that specific hotel is more expensive than the rest. We need a hotel with the most foot traffic. I was thinking Fairmont?"
"No, Fairmont is under heavy construction. Unless we want to impress the builders it might not be the best option."
"Huh, then which one?"
"I don't know, you should know all these things."
"Me? I'm not the CEO."
Maxwell only takes a large gulp of his coffee before leaning back in his chair.
"Maybe we could ask someone?" Grace says.
"Okay, but who?"
Who knows the in and outs of this company over and above the main HQ's affairs?
"Mmh, I think I know who." Grace squeals, a devious smirk on her face. "Now, borrow me your phone."
