Los Angeles, CA 1977.

"Happy birthday Faith!" Friends sang. "Make a wish and blow out the candles!" 

I turned the light switch back on. " Did you make a wish?" I asked, removing the 10 birthday candles from Faith's Smiley Face cake.

Faith nodded, " I did, mommy! Can I have a piece of the cake now?" 

Everyone chuckled. I passed the first piece of the delicious, sugary confection to my daughter. "Thank you." She dug right in.

After I finished passing the last of the food, Barbara pulled me aside a minute. 

"Did you need another piece of cake?" I offered, but she said no.

"Ang, are you alright?" Barbara was concerned. 

I mustered up a believable smile. " Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?"

She pulled me into a hug. " Don't lie to me. You're my best friend."

"I'm fine, really."

"Liar." She whispered, giving me one of those 'we'll discuss more later' looks. "Hey Ang, why don't you come out to dinner with my boyfriend and I? I know a sexy guy to be your other half."

I was hesitant for a moment. " I dunno, Barb." 

"I'm not taking no for an answer. Plus, it'll be good to get out of the house. You never go anywhere except to work. That's no fun!" She was adamant. 

Before I could protest, she decided for me. " Then it's settled, you'll bring Faith to my house. My boyfriend's kids will be there along with mine. Can't wait! See you next Friday night!"

I arrived with Faith at Barbara's house punctual as requested. I knocked on the door, waiting. "Faith, please be good for Aunt Barbara's sister. Behave and be polite." 

"You know I will, mommy." Faith had a smile just like her father's. 

Just then, the door opened revealing Barbara and 5 children- all around Faith's age. She motioned for us to come inside. "Hi Faith. Ready to play with the others?" She gave my daughter a hug. "Go ahead."

"Don't you look gorgeous tonight!" Barb marveled at my long, red maxi dress. I blushed.

I returned the compliment. 

"So the guys are meeting us at the restaurant. I'm really glad you've decided to have a night on the town with me." Barb linked an arm through mine. "Let's go!" We waved goodbye to our children and headed toward the car.
