Chapter 5//Epilogue
"I'm going to my room." I say and stand up quickly. I hurry out to my room before Ace could say a word. I sit on the edge of my bed as tears fill my eyes. "This isn't fair..." I whisper to myself and feel the tears drop onto my legs. I look over to the rose Kai gave to me earlier today, my heart starts to throb. Everything is happening too fast, I can't handle it.
I grab the nearest thing, a small hand mirror near the flower vase, and throw it against my wall in anger. After a few seconds, I hear my door open and hurried footsteps come to me. "Julia?" Xavier asks with a worried tone. "Julia, is everything alright? What's wrong?" He continues talking. "Shut up!" I scream at him, "I don't love you and I know you don't love me either! You're just in it for my money!" He stares at me in shock for a second before talking again, "What the hell are you talking about?" He raises his voice. "Of course I love you, Julia!" He goes to pull me into a hug but I push him away.
"DON'T touch me! You're not him!" I shout and feel my heart ache even more. "Who?" He asks, "Who am I not?" I go silent, deciding if I should tell him or not. "N-No one..." I say and look away. "No, Julia, tell me, now." He demands. When I don't answer him, he steps closer and repeats himself. "Fine! Kai. You're not Kai." I say to him.
"So, I can't touch my wife because I'm not a beaten up peasant? Ha! How foolish it is to fall in love with a man like him." He smirks and roughly grabs my chin, "If I wanted, I could have him hanged for trying to interfere with our marriage." He pulls my face closer and tries to kiss me. I slap him hard and he lets go of me.
"Is this Kai really that important to you?!" He snaps. I stay silent and rush out into the hall. I bump into Ace who was rushing to my room. "Oh! Julia! I'm sorry, but I heard glass shattering and I-" I cut him off, "It's fine, Ace." I smile. "B-But-!" "No, really, it's fine. I'm fine. Everything's just perfect." I say and continue walking.
"Mrs. Julia!" I hear one of my female servants call out to me. "Yes?" I respond. "You have some visitors." She says. "This late at night?" I ask, "It's got to be, what, twelve in the morning?" My curiosity guides me to the main hall where I see a small boy. "Hello, what is it that you need?" I ask while walking over to him. He looked about seven.
"There are scary men beating another man in the center of the village! Please help, Queen Julia!" He cries to me. I nod and call Ace to get the soldiers and we all head out to the village. When we arrive at the scene I see three men dressed in all black and covering their faces but there's one man who I know. Kai.
He's laying on the floor surrounded by his own blood and covered in injuries. The three men all have weapons. One has a bat with nails hammered into it, the other has a double bladed knife, and the last man has a metal pipe. They all look at us and start to tremble in fear. "Oh shit! They're from the castle!" One of the men shouts. "Run!!" The other man screams and they all start running.
The scene of Kai trembling on the floor covered in bruises and cuts boils my blood. "DON'T JUST STAND THERE! CAPTURE THEM!" I yell at my soldiers and rush over to Kai. The soldiers start to chase after the culprits. "Kai! Oh my God..." I shake him softly, hoping he's still alive. I see him starting to open his eyes. "Princess?" He mumbles quietly. "No, just Julia." I start crying again.
"Ace! Help me get him back to the castle! He needs to be treated immediately!" I say sternly and pick Kai up by his arms and Ace helps me. We struggle back to the castle. "It's really hard to do this in a dress that's crushing my organs, you know?" I laugh a bit to Ace. "Well, it's not easy to do this in a tuxedo that's crushing my nerves." He laughs.
Once we arrive at the castle, the female maids come rushing to help put Kai in the infirmary. The medic looks him over. "He doesn't seem to have any broken bones, which is a miracle. Some of these cuts are pretty deep so he'll need stitches. Other than that he's fine." He speaks. I let out a breath of relief. "Thank you, Sam." I thank the medic. "No problem, milady." He says respectfully as I sit next to Kai.
I hear the door open. "Would you do the same if it were me?" I hear Xavier's annoying voice ask me. "Of course I would. I'm not leaving anybody to die, not even a scumbag like you." I snap at him. I hear him laugh a bit. "So how is he?" He asks. "Like you even care, I bet you want him to die... Still, he'll be fine after he gets his stitches." I roll my eyes and grab Kai's hand.
"You're wrong on that part, I don't want him to die. I'm glad he was beaten up since it saves me less trouble." He snickers. I get up and stand in front of him with an evil glare. "How dare you come in here and say that to me? Hmph... You're just like how I thought you would be, a dickhead." I say to him. "And you're just like how I thought you would be, a pampered princess with no care for anyone." He replies. "Well, except the peasant."
"Stop saying that! He's not a 'peasant'! Nobody is a peasant, ok? You just can't see with that massive ego blocking your vision. Don't know why it's so big in the first place, I know everyone would hate you." I say to him with hate in my heart.
"I could say the same to you since you obviously can't see how you have the easy life, yet you want to leave so badly." He scoffs. "How could you know if this is the 'easy life'?" I ask him. "Because I was born poor. I know how it is without money, struggling for food, my mother was selling her body to pay for dinner every night." He says, "I know the horrors of living like him." He points to Kai.
"Well, if you knew what it was like to be poor, then why do you treat the people like crap?" I ask. He stays silent. "There's no excuse to being rude to people when you know they're in hell." I tell him and go to sit next to Kai.
I look to Kai and see he's already awake. "Oh! I'm sorry, did we wake you?" I ask. "Yeah, kinda. But it's alright because it was you who woke me up, I wouldn't have it any other way." He smiles and laughs a bit. I hear Xavier scoff but I ignore him. "How much of that did you hear?" I ask worriedly. I hate showing that side of me, I hate it when people see me being mean or rude to people. "Uhm.... Not much." He says.
"Lies." Xavier says. "You've been awake the entire time, I saw your eyes open the very moment she started talking." I continue to ignore him and I stare at Kai. "I mean... It's ok if you did. As long as you know that I'm not always like that." I smile nervously. "I know that. You couldn't hurt a single fly, only if it were self defense." He says and grabs my hand.
He starts to get up. "W-Wait! Shouldn't you rest??" I ask worriedly. "No." He laughs. "But your wounds!" I panic. "These? These are nothing, sweetheart, I've had worse." He says to me. I feel my heart burn when I hear him call me sweetheart. My face turns red and I stand up quickly. "B-But still-" He cuts me off by saying, "I promise, I'll be ok." He smiles at me once he's fully up. "Trust me, it's hard to get me to give up."
I follow him out to the main hall. He gives me a big hug and whispers in my ear very softly, "The offer is still available." I remember back at the tent when he asked me to run away with him. I still can't believe I turned him down. I stand still, paralyzed, as I watch him walk out the front doors.
Screw this... I think to myself. Tears fall from my eyes and I begin to tear off the tight clothing from my body. Once I felt like it was easy enough to run, I ran to him before anyone could catch me. "Kai!" I call out to him. He turns around to face me. "I accept." I say to him and he smiles. "I knew you would." He says to me.
We both run off. I ignored the yells of the maids and workers at the castle. I never even heard Ace's voice screaming until he said, just before we ran out the front gates, "Good luck!" I feel Kai grab my hand as we ran and I intertwined my fingers with his.
Once we were out of the village, out of breath, and out of sight, Kai looked into my eyes and said something I've been waiting to hear since I met him. "I love you." The words echoed in my ears. My heart started pounding hard as I said to him, "I love you too." He grabbed me by my waist and leaned in close. I felt as if I were floating above the clouds as our lips collided. He kissed me passionately and, for the first time in a long time, I felt pure happiness.
