Dwight Schrute

The picture is supposed to show Bailey all grown up.

--------------------------------

Victoria hated herself at the moment. She was becoming increasingly tired and it was getting harder for her to do the farm work by herself. She had no idea what it was. She assumed it was fatigue since she had been doing all of James' work for over a year now. Bailey helped as much as he could, but it wasn't much. Victoria had finally collapsed from sheer exhaustion. Bailey had licked her awake. She knew that if she didn't get her act together, she could lose the farm.

"Bailey, we have to get a farm hand." She told him one morning. She hated the idea. A farm hand could try to take over her farm, he could kill Bailey, he could steal her money or crops. But it was the best idea she had at this point.

Victoria decided to to write an add for the paper. It would cost her, but she hoped it would work. Bailey laid on top of her feet, warming them while she wrote. He was a year old. Victoria was starting to think of making more money by breeding him and selling the puppies. She pushed the idea out of her mind at the moment. Victoria finished writing the add and read over the finished product.

Wanted: One farm hand to help Victoria Smith with her farm work. Interviews will be held on Thursday, October 20th, 1915 at ten O' clock in the morning.

Victoria nodded. She would take this into town later in the day. For now, she just wanted to read and relax. She went up to her reading room and curled up in James' chair. Although it was a little hard for her to believe, this was the first time she'd done it. She couldn't concentrate on her book. All she could think of was all the times she and James had curled up in his chair. She had read while James had just held her and whispered sweet nothings in her ear. Victoria smiled at the memories. She knew that one day he would come home and they would read in here again. She just had to wait and have faith.

-------------------------------

James was currently feeling very worried. Charlie still wasn't better. James had taken on his work so that he could rest and get well, but it didn't look like it was happening. James knew it was only a matter of time before the Germans figured this out and killed him. He was currently hauling guns to and fro. He had a feeling that this was just for their amusement. Adalric hadn't given him any news about Victoria's letter. All he had said was that he had sent it off. It could have gotten lost or gone to another Victoria Smith, for all he knew. Still, he had hope that she had received it. His picture of her was the only light his world of darkness.

"How many times are you going to look at that?" Jamie asked. They were working together for once.

"As many times as I'm able." James said.

"You're going to soil it." Jamie warned.

"It's survived this long. It can survive a little more." James said. "I just miss her so much."

"I honestly don't get how you're so attached to her. You haven't seen her in a year." Jamie said. "For all you know, she's dead or having an affair with someone else."

"Don't you dare say those things." James said. "I honestly don't understand how you're not upset about never seeing your wife."

"I don't know. I didn't really love her. I don't know why I got married in the first place." Jamie said.

James was silent. He didn't understand how Jamie couldn't miss his wife at all. It was odd to him. But, then again, he and Victoria had bonded very strongly. He missed Victoria so much at that moment that he just wanted to scream. He wanted his wife. He wanted to be home.

------------------------------------------

It was the day of the interviews. Victoria was a bit frightened, since she didn't like meeting strangers. She hoped Bailey didn't leave her side during the interviews. She had the shotgun that James had taught her how to use a week before he had left under the kitchen table just in case. She was actually pretty good at firing it, in her opinion. She had never actually killed anything before, just knocked some cans off of the fence. Victoria went outside and was both surprised and relieved to see that there was only one person there. She invited him inside. Bailey stood up and growled. Victoria held him back by his collar.

"This is Bailey, my dog." She said.

"You keep your dog in the house?" The man asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Well, yes. When your husband is off at war, there are very few options of protection." Victoria said. "I'm sorry, I don't think I ever caught your name."

"Dwight Schrute of Schrute Farms." The man said, holding out his hand for Victoria to shake.

"What do you do at your farm?" Victoria asked.

"We grow beets." Dwight said.

"Anything else?" Victoria asked.

"Just beets. There is nothing else." Dwight said. Victoria tried to hold back her laughter.

"Right, good." Victoria said. "What skills do you have?"

"I'm well educated in literature." Dwight said.

"So am I." Victoria said. "Sorry, please go on."

Dwight told her about himself and Victoria felt herself trying not to drift off from boredom. Bailey growled if Dwight ever got too close to Victoria for his liking. Victoria was glad for his protection and would pretend to scold him, but would whisper, "Good boy," in his ear. (Whenever my "friend" comes over, my dog growls at her and I do this with him.) When he was finished telling her about himself, he asked her to tell him about herself.

"Oh, er, well...like I said, I'm well educated in literature. Bailey and I are very good at sheep herding and we've managed to get third place at one trial and first place at three others. I'm thinking about breeding him." Victoria said.

"Well, if he's as good as you say he is, then you should breed him." Dwight said.

"I'll think about it." Victoria said. "Would you like to see the farm?"

"Yes." Dwight said. "What do you grow here?"

"Oh, just the usual. Lettuce, turnips, I sell some milk and eggs." Victoria said. "Come along."

Victoria got up to show Dwight around the farm. Bailey followed her and growled at Dwight. He nuzzled Victoria's leg. Victoria scratched him behind the ears as they stepped outside.

"The chickens and barn where I keep my horse, Blaze, are over there. The sheep field and pasture and crops are over there." Victoria pointed to each section of her land. "The woods where I ride Blaze are to the north."

"This is some very nice land." Dwight said.

"Yes, it is. James and I were very lucky that he got to it before anyone else." Victoria said, smiling. "Hey, Bailey, want to show Dwight what we can do?"

Bailey wagged his tail. Victoria decided that that meant yes and took her dog and Dwight to the sheep field. Victoria looked down at Bailey after opening the pen. He stared back at her, waiting for her to tell him when to go.

"Away to me." She said.

Bailey ran into the pen and started nipping at the sheep's ankles. Victoria yelled commands at him and Bailey listened to them, herding the sheep flawlessly. Victoria smiled, glad that she would have something to show James when he came home.

"That'll do!" Victoria called when the sheep were in the field. She gave Bailey a piece of turkey. "Good boy! Such a good boy!"

Victoria smiled as she thought of how proud James would be of her. Victoria had never really been good at anything before. She was good at reading, but she couldn't really do anything with that. She had several story ideas, but she hadn't really done anything with him. Sheep herding, however, was going very well for her. And it was giving Bailey something to do. She remembered once reading that Bearded Collies needed work to do, or else they could get bored and destroy the house.

"Well, that's impressive." Dwight said.

"Thank you." Victoria said.

-----------------------------------------------

James was doing Charlie's work again. He didn't mind. Jamie was helping him since this seemed easier than his normal work.

"I don't think he's going to get any better. He's been sick for weeks." Jamie said.

"He just needs time." James said. "He'll be okay. He's got to be."

"You've seen what happens." Jamie said. "They get shot right in-"

"Why do you have to have such a negative attitude?" James asked. (James is probably everyone who knows me.)

"Because I'm stuck in a POW camp and I want to go home." Jamie said.

"So does everyone here. You aren't the only person here, you know." James said.

"Look, it's just how I am, okay?" Jamie said. "So unless you want me to leave you alone to go mad, then you're just going to have to accept my personality. I don't remember you having a problem with it before."

"I didn't because I wasn't stuck with you all the time. It was kind of funny before. Now it's just annoying and you seem whiny. You're acting as if you're getting the worst treatment possible here." James said. "Others- like Charlie- have it a lot worse."

"Alright, fine. I'll try not to be so negative." Jamie said.

Just as they had fallen silent, there was a commotion behind them. Both of them turned around and were horrified to see Charlie being dragged out of their cabin. James ran to see what was going on. Had Charlie broken a rule? Adalric forced him back.

"Don't. You'll get killed." He said.

"What's going on?" James asked. Jamie had come up behind him.

"They've decided that you're friend isn't going to get better any time soon." Adalric said. "I'm sorry, but their going to kill him."

"What? They can't!" James said. He tried to rush forward, but Adalric pushed him back with his gun.

"Just because I've helped you doesn't mean I'm not still working." He warned.

"James, stay back." Jamie said. "Do you want to die and never see Victoria again?"

That got James to come to his senses. He finally quieted down. Charlie looked at him and Jamie. They both stared sadly back at him. They both felt awful. James and he locked eyes.

"Take care of Amy." Charlie said. James nodded.

"I will." He said.

James turned his head away as the gun was pointed at Charlie's head.
