Watching Out for My Pal

Narrator's POV

"How's your new roommate?" Clint asked Bruce as everyone sat around the dinning table, eating the breakfast Bruce had happily provided for them.

"He's good." Bruce said, placing an omelet on Tony's plate with a spatula from a pan he was holding. He wore a black apron over his black office pants and white dress shirt.

"Really nice of you too cook breakfast this morning, Bruce." Tony said.

"Break anything yet?" Clint asked.

"No. He's been quite respectful of my things." Bruce said. "All you have to do is set some ground rules."

"I told him not to touch my stuff, and he-"

"He hasn't been to earth in twenty years, give him some time." Bruce said.

"Speaking of Thor, where is he?" Natasha asked.

"I don't know." Bruce said. "He wasn't in the room when I woke up."

"He's out." Steve said. "I saw him go out this morning."

"What? Why weren't we told?" Bruce asked.

"He said he'd be back." Steve said.

"He doesn't know New York at all." Bruce said.

"Clint. I thought you said you showed him around." Tony said.

"After buying a million chocolate bars?" Clint asked. "I couldn't take him anywhere else."

"He's a grown man. He can take care of himself." Natasha said.

"Uh, no. He can't." Tony said. "Last time he said the conveyor belt was the most amazing things he'd ever seen."

"Did he say where he was going?" Bruce asked Steve.

"No. He just said he was going out." Steve said.

"How am I suppose to find him now?" Bruce asked, taking the apron off, getting ready to go out.

"Oh, relax. I gave him a phone." Tony said, taking out his phone. "I'll just call him. He'll pick up and tell us where he is." Tony dialed Thor's phone number.

It began to ring.

Everyone waited.

"He'll pick up." Tony said.

The phone continued ringing.

And ringing.

And ringing.

And ringing.

"Okay...so he isn't pocking up. Big deal. Maybe his phone died." Tony said.

"Fifty seven." Bruce said, leaning against the counter, pinching the bridge between his eyebrows.

"Hm?" Everyone turned to him.

"You called him fifty seven times." Bruce said. "How could he not pick up once? He must be in trouble."

"Didn't he say he was from another world?" Natasha asked. "Maybe he doesn't know how to work a phone."

"I explained it to him." Tony said. "He knows what he's-"

"Have you even talked to the guy? Everything goes over his head. It's like trying to get a dog to listen to you when there's a squirrel behind you." Clint said.

"So we should go and search for him." Steve said.

"No. I'll go look for him. If we all go, we'll attract too much attention." Bruce said, walking over to the elevator.

"Ooo, look at Bruce all pumped up and ready to take action. Go kick some ass." Clint said.

"If you don't shut up. The only ass I'll be kicking is yours." He said as the doors closed and gave one of the doors a punch.

"Hey, come on." Tony said. "This is why we can't have nice things."

"I mean, it wasn't a very nice elevator." Steve said. "It's too...gray."

"Shut up. Nobody asked you Rogers." Tony said.

"Steve, that's what color they're suppose to be." Natasha said.

"Come on. Come on. Come on." Bruce said, tapping his thumb against the steering wheel as he sat in traffic.

It was that time in New York, where everyone was heading to work and the streets were complete chaos.

The cars honking, and other trying to squeeze into places.

"No, no, no, no, no!" Bruce said as a car pulled right in front of him in the line. "Gah!" He hit the car horn. "Hah..." He sighed, placing a hand over his eyes.

>knock< >knock< >knock<

"Ah!" Bruce gasped when he heard someone knock on his window.

"Hi Bruce!" Thor said outside the window, waving at him with a smile on his face. He had a brown paper bag in his other hand.

"Thor!" Bruce opened the door. "Thor." He got off the car. "Thank goodness you're alright." He said, bringing him in for a short embrace.

"Oh." Thor's head perked up.

Bruce pulled away. "Where were you? I've been looking all around for you. I was worried. Are you hurt? Did you get hu-"

"Relax." Thor chuckled. "I'm fine."

"Thank god." Bruce sighed. "Where were you?" He asked.

"I went out." Thor said. "I told Captain."

"We called you over and over again? Why didn't you answer your phone?" Bruce asked.

"Phone?" Thor asked.

Bruce showed him his sell phone.

"Oh." Thor said. He took his phone out the pocket. "That's what that is. I thought it was music box."

Bruce dropped his head.

"No wonder it had such a short tune." Thor said.

"Please get in the car." Bruce sighed.

"So, what were you out doing?" Bruce asked Thor as they sat in traffic.

"I went out and bought this." Thor said, reaching for the paper bag and taking out a lamp from it.

The lamp had stars cut all around into the lampshade.

"A lamp?" Bruce asked.

"Oh, it's not just any lamp." Thor said. "This is a special lamp."

Bruce listened.

"I've noticed the many books on astronomy you have in the bedroom and the telescopes by the window." Thor said. "Not mention how much of a space nerd you were back in the day. All the posters on the walls."

"Yes. I like space." Bruce said, smiling.

"But then I also noticed how much you struggle to sleep. I'd wake up to you mumbling in your sleep. You toss and turn and sigh. Sometimes you wake up, gasping. Nightmares must get you bad, huh?" Thor said.

"Yes. They get bad sometimes." Bruce said.

"So I thought I'd go out and get you this lamp." Thor said. "But it's not just any lamp, no. It's a special lamp. You see, you can plug it into the wall, and it lights up the room with stars. But that's not all. It also spins!" He smiled, eyes twinkling. "It creates the perfect warm and calm environment."

Bruce was truly out of words.

"I was hoping maybe this would help you sleep better, and I got stars because you said you like them." Thor shrugged.

"Thor. You didn't have to do that." Bruce said.

"I know I didn't have to." Thor said. "But I wanted to." He smiled. "You know, watching out for my best pal." He nudged Bruce, chuckling.

Bruce smiled. "Now what did I do to get a friend like you?"

"You didn't have to do anything. I just-"

"I know Thor." Bruce said. "It's just something people say when they appreciate how much someone cares for them." Bruce explained.

"Oh." Thor said. "Thank you."

"You're welcome." Bruce smiled.
