Chapter 3-Papyrus
The laboratory was nothing like our old home. It had some very dangerous stuff on the lower floor, so I had to keep Sans and the baby on the top floor. They didn't seem to mind however, they just wanted to explore. I let them, and tried my best to do work without letting them get hurt. Asgore wanted me to find a way to make my powerful magic available to other monsters, and I vowed to try my best.
Most of my work happened in the night time though, because a baby and young boy require almost constant attention. The first day will always be a day I will never forget.
After they had run around for a while, Sans had come to me and asked,
"What are we gunna name my bro?"
I honestly hadn't thought about it. There was so much going on in my life, what with losing Helvetica and my other infant. Still, the baby needed a name.
"Why don't we name him after your grandmother? Times Roman isn't for a specific gender. Perhaps, Times New Roman?" I suggested. Sans put his hand to his chin, aparently lost in thought.
"I don't think that fits him." He finally said, glancing at his little brother. I'd found that when the child wasn't sleeping so much, he was very energetic, and rather noisy. "Maybe we can name sis that?" He said, and he was smiling.
That's when I realized that Sans didn't really understand it. He didn't understand death. It made sense, he was only five. But he didn't know that his mother and sister wouldn't be back. He was waiting for the day they would walk in the door and we could be a complete family again.
He was waiting for a day that would never come.
"Yes. We'll call your sister New." I said, not wanting to crush his childish hope. "Perhaps we should name him something that fits him a bit more."
"Papyrus." Sans seemed a bit surprised that he'd spoken up, but he then seemed proud. "Yeah, his names Papyrus!" He walked over to the babybones, and picked him up. "Do you like the name Papyrus?" He asked, and tossed the baby ever so slightly in the air.
Papyrus shrieked with laughter, causing both Sans and I to smile.
"Papyrus it is." I said, taking the newly named baby from his older brother.
"Dad?"
"Yes Sans?"
"When will Mom and New be back?"
I froze, not ready for the question. What do I tell him? That they'll never be back? That he'll see them again one day? No one really knows what happens when we die. Maybe he will see them, and maybe he won't. I don't want to think about their death, much less the death of my sons. They're the only family I have left.
"I don't know Sans." I finally said, bending down to hug him. "I really don't know." He hugged me back, and I could tell he was scared. He thought much to highly of me, he thought I knew everything. So not knowing this meant that no one knew to him. "Lets not think a out that, alright?" I said, picking him up. "Lets go play with Papyrus." I said, and he looked worried, but began to play with his brother anyway.
I don't know when Sans, but.....I feel we'll see them again some day.
