Chapter 2-Job Offers

I held on to my youngest son as I lead my older son through the Capitol. It would be so much easier for him to get lost here, and I wouldn't be able to put up with myself if that happened. I'd already lost two of my family today. I lead him to the Castle, and I had to stop because Sans wouldn't move.

"What's wrong?" I asked, gripping his hand a bit tighter. I couldn't tell if he was scared or not.

"It's so big." He replied, squeezing back. I forgot he'd never been to the Capitol before. That was my reaction when I first got here too.

"Yes, but I know my way around, so we won't get lost, okay?" He nodded, and I walked into the castle. It truely was a magnificent building. The royal guardsmen here were just as polite as the ones in our village, although it may have been because they recognized me. I told them I needed to see the King, and they began to lead us right to him.

"Dad, are we really gunna meet the King?" Sans whispered, and I nodded slightly. I didn't have to look at him to know he was excited. What monster wouldn't be?

"He's right through there." One of the guardsmen said, and I thanked him before walking through the large doors. I smiled at the King's Judge, who returned the smile. He looked over my boys quickly, but allowed them to pass. They were much to young to have done anything wrong.

"Who was that?" Sans asked after we passed through the room.

"The King's Judge. He decides if people have a pure enough Soul to talk to the King. If they don't, he has to keep the King safe, because they probably want to do him harm." I explained, leading my son into the throne room.

"I wanna do that when I grow up." He whispered.

"Perhaps you can." Sans and I both jumped at the voice. I wasn't going to respond to him, he had mostly been saying it to himself. But, of course, the King would.

"King Asgore." I said, bowing for him. Sans tried to do the same, but we were still holding hands, and he didn't seem to really understand it. He almost fell over.

The King only seemed amused.

"Gaster, who are these two?" He asked, gesturing to the infant in my hands, who was woken by the booming voice, and to Sans.

"My sons. I couldn't leave them with anyone, and I needed to see you immediately." I replied. Sans waved slightly, and the infant began to make cooing sounds. He didn't seem upset by the King, instead he seemed not to mind. Hopefully, he would stay that happy. The King, on the whole, was a very kind monster, but I wasn't sure how he'd react to a crying baby.

"I see. I'm assuming you'd like to resign from your job so you can take care of them?" He said, waving back at Sans. I nodded, not sure what else to say. I wasn't going to leave them, and I couldn't fight in the war and watch my sons. "I understand, and I would like to offer you a new job. I am in desperate need of a Royal Scientist. It shouldn't be too hard to raise them and do the job, and if it is, I will allow you to start at a later date."

I certainly wasn't expecting that. But it would definitely help.

"I would like that You Highness." I replied, gripping Sans' hand a bit tighter. I could stay with my sons. It was certain now, I wouldn't have to break my promise.

"Good. You start tomorrow, if you can. You will live in the Capitol from now on, inside the laboratory. The upper level is for living, the lower level is for your work." I nodded again. "Good. Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe Tori wanted to talk to me about something." He got up, and turned to a door on the other side of the room. "Oh, and you, young one?" Sans froze for a second, before slowly speaking up.

"Y-yes?"

"Come back when you're a bit older, and we'll see if I need a Royal Judge."

And with that King Asgore left the room.
