Chapter 17- Smile

Just as Sans had done when he was younger, Papyrus had begun to show signs of magic. His magic appeared to be slightly different from Sans and I's. Our magic allowed us to move a Soul at will, in any direction we wanted. Papyrus was having difficulties lifting the object (no way was he using actual Souls yet) after he'd effected it. I wasn't sure if he was incapable of it, or if it was simply to hard for him to do at that point.

"So, how'd I do?" He asked, turning to me. We'd been practicing all day and I could already see he was improving.

"Well, I'm not sure if you'll ever be able to lift a Soul," I started and his face fell. "but, your bone attacks are already almost as strong as Sans. It's likely your bone attacks will be much stronger than anyone's if you keep practicing."

"Yeah, but bone attacks are useless unless you're in battle. You and Sans can pick up anything you want whenever you want! I just have stupid bones." I knelt down beside him to hug him.

"It's alright Papyrus. You can protect people so much better than Sans and I can. All you have to do is learn to control it, and you can become the hero of the Underground." I said, trying my best to reassure him.

"Do you think I could become a member of the Royal Guard?" He asked, and I smiled. Ever since Undyne had mentioned her families history in the Guard, Papyrus had been determined to become a member. He and Undyne already "trained" a lot, even if their training was simply running around and pretending to use magic.

"I know you can Papyrus. I'm sure you'll be the most famous Guardsman ever. And I will be so proud of you." I said, picking him up. He laughed slightly as I spun him around. After a few moments, I set him back on the ground. "Alright, try again. See if you can use your effect on the object in your favor." He nodded and close his eye sockets in concentration. After a moment, the object was immobile.

"Now, try throwing a few bones at it." I said, already realizing how useful this could really be. He nodded slightly, and threw a few bones in it's direction. It shattered in two, and we both yelled in surprise and joy.

"Geez, what are you two doing out here?" Sans asked, coming out of the house.

"Sans! Look! I finally learned how to use my magic!" Papyrus said, rushing over to grab Sans' hand and drag him towards me.

"Really? I've gotta see this." Sans said, winking at me. I just chuckled in response. Both Sans and I knew that it was unlikely that Papyrus would be able to use his magic as well on the second try. magic is an unpredictable thing, and it's often inconsistent. Still, it was nice to see Papyrus so happy.

Seeing your children smile is one of the best things in the world.
