Chapter 14-Nightmares

It was almost midnight when I woke up. For a moment, I wasn't sure why I was awake, but I realized after a moment. There was a crash downstairs.

I slowly got out of bed, checking on Papyrus. He was sill fast asleep in the room next to mine, but Sans' door was open. He almost always had his door closed, so I had a vague idea who was downstairs. I walked down slowly, just in case it wasn't my oldest son. The kitchen's light was on, and Sans was just walking out of it when I made it to the bottom of the stairs.

"What happened?" I asked, and he tensed slightly.

"Nothing broke. I just knocked over the milk. The cap was on, so, no spills either." He said, laughing slightly.

"I meant, why are you downstairs at midnight." I clarified, reaching forward to touch his shoulder. He jerked away from me, making me pull my hand back.

"Sorry, sorry." Sans said, pulling his hood up. I could still see his eye glowing in the dark.

"Nightmare?" I asked, reaching forward again. This time, he let me put my hand on his shoulder. He nodded once, and I directed him to the couch. He sat down, and curled into me when I sat beside him. I pulled him closer, remembering when he was a child, and could fully sit in my lap. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"It was weird. I was sitting in a dark room. I don't even know if it was a room, everything was pitch black. I walked around for a while, but I couldn't find anything. I just, gave up. I sat down. That's when it got weird." He pulled his hood down, snuggling into my side. I just held him tighter, trying to be as comfortable as possible. "You showed up. But you weren't really you. Your skull was cracked and your hands had holes through the center. You talked to me, but it didn't sound like English. I could still understand it though. You said, 'Don't be afraid. You just have to keep trying. Protect your brother. I'll still be with you, even in the darkest time. Dark, darker, yet darker still. But I'll still be there.'"

"You remember all that?" I asked, and he nodded. His eye had stopped glowing while he was telling the story, and I knew he felt much calmer. "Do you want to go back to bed?" He nodded again, and I picked him up. "You're getting a bit heavy." I said, chuckling slightly. He just shrugged, before cuddling closer. I brought him back to his room, but changed my mind at the last minute. I headed back to my room, and set Sans down on the bed.

"Dad?" I turned around to find Papyrus in the doorway, rubbing his eye sockets. "Can I sleep in here too?"

"Of course. Did you have a nightmare?"

"No, you'll just need The Great Papyrus to protect you from all the monsters under the bed!" I chuckled again, helping Papyrus up into the bed. The three of us hadn't cuddled together for a very long time. Still, it was one of the nicest things I've ever done. We should really do it more often.
