thirty-one.
June was standing at the edge of the parking lot, pacing back and forth and back and forth just waiting. June had taken her jacket off and left it somewhere between the parking lot and where she had had a full breakdown only a few minutes prior. She hadn't been able to shake the shock off yet, her eyes wide and crazed as she looked around. Flashing between her eyes was the images of Hardy and Singh, Hardy and Singh, Hardy and Singh, that same terrifying look in their eyes as they realized she had killed them. Junes body count was rising rather quickly, and there was only one person who she knew could handle this better than her.
Headlights shone in her only moments later and she was continued to stop pacing, her breaths frantic as she hoped it was who she had called for. The lights turned off and the drivers side door opened, Rafe Cameron stepping out of the car. He had a pissed off look on his face, they were still mad at each other, and she hadn't moved from her spot, so he assumed she was being stubborn.
"If this is you apologizing it already sucks." He felt unsettled about the situation so he stayed at his car for just a moment longer, an eerie feeling overwhelming him as he realized she was muttering to herself. She didn't even seem to realize he was there, his angry expression melted away and he held a wary look instead, his chest rising sporadically as he picked up on her manic state. Her head was turned to the ground and he couldn't see her face, the boy wondering why she wasn't wearing anything but her t-shirt in this cold weather. He took nervous steps towards her and lifted his hand, nervous to rest it on her shoulder. The instant his finger connected with her skin she jumped, turning towards him with wide and paranoid eyes, his face dropping with fear at the sight of her. "Whose—whose blood is this? You—you—hey! Whose blood is that?!"
He had been immediately alarmed by the blood splatter and smeared across her face, the blood he could now see on her hands and shirt. Her face was pale and the look behind his eyes was a look he had only ever seen once from her. He had grabbed her by the arm, his fingers digging into her skin as he immediately seemed to pick up the intensity of the situation. His other hand dropped to her, pulling the hem of her shirt up it make sure the blood wasn't coming from her, his eyes blinking as he realized just how out of her mind she was.
"I had to do it. You've got to believe me I had to! I had no choice! He was trying to kill me! He was going to kill me I had no choice! I had no—"
"Who?! Who was trying to kill you?!"
"I had no choice —" He slapped his hand over her mouth to silence her, still not quite sure of what was going on. His context clues led him tot he right answer, but he was hoping for their own sake that it was something different. He pressed them together as he held the hand to her mouth and then the back of her neck, so that she couldn't escape his grip. He looked down at her with his chin raised, a cautionary breath leaving his lips as he held her there.
"What happened?" He said in a low whisper, his head turning left and right and then back to her. His natural paranoia immediately kicked in, and he felt like there were eyes everywhere on them. Holding her like this informed him just how much she was shaking, the boy feeling a twinge of sympathy for her. He looked down at her with a demanding look, forcing himself to be calm so that he could convince her to speak. "Can you tell me what happened?"
She nodded her head and he nodded back, a hardened look on his face. If June wasn't so out of it she would have recognized him immediately, this Rafe in front of her was the one who had kidnapped her, who had betrayed Limbrey and attacked her on the boat. This was the perfect person to have on her side at the moment.
"Okay...okay tell me." His voice was hoarse and low and he had acclimated so quickly to her urgency that anyone watching them would be alarmed. His fingers slowly lifted from her mouth and even her lips were trembling, this alone confirming to him what had happened.
"I killed him." She admitted not only to him but to herself. Rafes eyes closed for a moment and his nostrils flared as he let out a troubled breath. He reopened his eyes and realize she was completely gone right now, not only by the fact that she had killed someone, but he could smell the alcohol on her breath. His head tilted slightly and he leaned a little closer, his hand still tight on the back of her neck.
"Killed who?"
"Hardy." Rafe didn't recognize the name, his eyebrows furrowing and his head slightly shaking. She pulled out of his grip and ran a hand over her face, Rafe realizing that the blood hadn't even fully dried yet. He contemplated what to do next but decided he needed to see it for himself, he was aware why she had called him now.
"Show me." The Cameron boy instructed, and June gave him a fearful look. However she nodded, turning slowly and making her way towards Hardy's body. She approached it and held her breath, Rafe still in a certain state of disbelief. However once they approached the body he felt a new sense of panic in him, his eyes squeezing shut as he saw the blood covering the unknown man's neck and body. "Fuck. Fuck!" He yelled, punching the wood of the shed they were behind. June was lost in Hardy's eyes, cold and empty, her trance unbroken by anything Rafe was doing.
"What do we do?" June said in a surprisingly calm voice. Rafe was pulling at the hairs on the side of his head, his breaths heavy as he tried to think. The rationality kicked in and he gestured towards the body, the therapy working a little too well for him in this moment.
"Call the police?!" Junes head snapped to him and it was like a switch flipped, her face scrunching up in disgust as she walked towards him.
"I don't need rational Rafe with me right now. I need you to be crazy Rafe okay? Help me with this please. Please I don't know what to do. He's...he faked his death a few months ago. Technically he's dead anyways." Rafe was looking at her with disbelief, the boy halfway sitting against the shed wall. He stared at her and really processed her words thoroughly, the girl able to see the decisions being made in his head. He brought his hand down to his mouth and chewed at his nails for only a second before shaking his head and pushing off of the wall.
"Alright. Okay. But you have to listen to me and don't argue about shit alright? You—you...you killed someone. You're the one putting me in this situation. I'm helping you. I'm helping you." June shook her head at his words, feeling like shit from what he was saying, acting as if he was better. She bit the inside of her cheek to keep her snide remark in, the boy leaning down over the body and shaking his head. "Fuck! Okay. Okay listen...I'm going get him ready to move, I need you to get all your shit. You cannot leave anything here. You said he faked his death? What does that mean?"
"When I burned his office down a few months ago he staged his death. It's the whole reason Singh kidnapped me. He's...he's Singhs cousin."
"You burned his office down? He's—he's Singhs cousin? What the—" June shook her head and waved her hand so he would quit talking, seemingly breaking into a determination and focus that was edging on impulsive. Rafe was far from Dr. Michael's patient at the moment, his mindset having reverted to the version of himself that would do anything to save his own ass. And hers. He would save hers. That was about it.
"I'll explain later. Right now we need to get him and us out of here!" June said in a serious tone, Rafe nodding his head and looking down at the body. June took off looking for her stuff, leaving the Cameron boy and Hardy alone. He looked down at the man with observant eyes, seeing that he had only one stab wound to the neck. It was a significantly large one though, his eyes searching the ground for the murder weapon. About 3 feet away was a screwdriver covered in blood, Rafe letting out a huff of air as he hurried towards it. He picked it up with the edge of his shirt and dropped it into his pocket, looking back at the body and shaking his head. He had never expected her to do something like this, murder someone in cold blood. He didn't know the full story yet but he swallowed hard, wondering if he had rubbed off on her a little too much. He made his way towards the man's head, surveying how exactly he would grab him. When June returned she was holding a few things, a bottle of alcohol, her jacket, and her phone.
"Run and throw that in the car. Hurry up. I'm gonna need your help." His thumb wiped at the corner of his mouth as his other hand rested on his hip, the Cameron boy unsure how calmly they could do this. She still seemed pretty out of it, the boy staring out at the water before she came back into view. It was now that he saw that she was wet, his lips twitching as he started to piece together what happened without her explanation. He believed her when she said she had to, he believed her when she said he was going to kill her. They both held their breath as they carried him to the car, Rafe using her jacket to keep the blood off the trunk.
He closed the trunk and she stared at it, catching breath as another wave of realization hit her. Rafe gestured with his head towards her car but she didn't see him, what had happened replaying in her head over and over. She had killed another person. She would never get over this.
"Hey. Hey!" Rafe grabbed her by the arms and caught her attention, his fingers digging into her skin hard. She winced but didn't move, the pain anchoring her to the Earth as he looked down at her with shaky breath. "You need to be here, understand? Be here."
She searched his face and he had a stern look, June giving him a nod and answering.
"I'm here." She said, Rafe looking down at her with a shattered sense of morality. He had the initial normal thought that maybe he should be worried, maybe he would be next and he knew not to underestimate her. The way to get his words across would be to come off stern, she responded well to it.
"Follow me. Follow me and we'll deal with this somewhere else." She still didn't seem like she was with him, his eyebrows furrowing together as he looked down at her. His eyes flickered across her face and he got angry, grabbing her by the chin and pressing his fingers into her cheeks as he stared down at her. His other hand held her in place and his lips were parted, a tense breath leaving them. His tongue shot to the corner of his mouth for just a second and then ran over his bottom row of teeth, his eyes darkening as he looked down at her. "Listen to me. Baby I need you to listen."
His grip on her face pulled her out of her head and she saw him, she really saw him, the man nodding when he realized she was now actually listening.
"Get in your car and-and follow me. Got it?" He said, June nodding her head as some kind of choked noise left her throat. He held her there for a moment, nodding with her before he pushed her back with the hand on her face. June rubbed at her jaw as she made her way to her car, getting in the passenger seat and turning the car on. The first thing she did was turn the radio all the way up, the music blasting and drowning out the voices in her head calling her all the things she already knew about herself. Rafes car pulled out and she was quick to follow, her lips still trembling as she sucked in such shaky breaths. It wasn't until she started driving that she remembered she had been drinking, the girl blinking a few times to try and pay attention to her driving. Getting pulled over wouldn't be ideal at the moment.
Halfway through the drive to wherever the hell Rafe was taking them she felt the shock drop off of her like nothing at all, terrible guilt taking its place. She wiped at her nose and her mouth with her hand and tried her hardest to not have a panic attack, or a psychotic break. She leaned forwards and rock back and forth while driving for a moment before she let out an angry scream, realizing just how badly she had fucked up. Not only had she killed someone, she had involved Rafe, meaning he would have more over her than he already did. But another thought occurred to her, and she wondered if this made them even. Finally, they were even.
They pulled into Tannyhill and June was confused, not sure what they would be doing here. Rafe was out of his car and at her door as soon as she put it in park, the boy ripping her door open and pulling her out. June didn't struggle against his aching grip on her arm, the pain reminding her of what she had done. He pulled her to the back of his car and pulled open the trunk, her breath hitching once again as the body remained exactly where they had left it. Both of them had hoped it would disappear on the ride over.
"What are we doing here?" She asked, turning towards him and feeling safer here than at the dock. He was looking around the property, his eyes narrowed as he thought about it. He thought back to his father and Gavin, the pilot from the airstrip. He knew what to do.
"Help me get him to the boat. You're lucky I have the Catty here." June realized he was referencing the boat they had stolen from him months before, a lump building in her throat as she realized just how lucky it was indeed. She gave him a nod and although it took them a decent amount of time they managed to get Hardy onto the boat. June hunched over to try and catch her breath, her arms aching from how heavy and hard it had been to carry him. She looked at the body again and felt something so terrible in her stomach, something that made her want to hit herself. She felt relieved. Her problems were now gone, at least her biggest nagging ones. They died with him. But with the death of those problems sprouted a whole set of new ones.
"Go inside." She heard him but she was hardly listening, her eyes glued to Hardys body. She was trying to shake off the feeling of being horrifyingly relieved, feeling to her stomach when she couldn't shake it. "Are you--I'm trying to have a conversation with you! You're not listening. Listen to me."
"Fuck! I'm listening! Sorry if I'm having a hard time processing this. I'm not used to doing this kind of thing like you!"
"Like me...like me. You're so damn ungrateful. So ungrateful. I do everything for you! I've done everything for you. You do this and still you find a way to insult me for helping you. I--I do this type of thing because you make me. You make me do this stuff. You make me!" There he was. She saw him for who he really was once again and she swallowed the words she was going to say back, knowing he was half right. "Go the fuck inside. Take a shower. You fucking stink. And then when you get done showering you're going to tell me exactly what the fuck is going on!"
June considered her options and realized she had none, she had to listen to him. She was optionless. It was about time she stopped resisting and just listening.
"What are you going to do with him?" She asked, Rafe rolling his eyes as he shot her a look. The way he was feeling towards her right now was akin to how he had felt when he had taken her from that church, frustrated and so irritated by her presence that he just wanted to hurt her. He let out an exasperated sigh and pointed towards the house, June realizing he was not going to answer.
"Go in the fucking house!" He said in a pleading tone, his voice raising. She realized she didn't want to know what he was going to do with him, instead turning around and getting off of the boat. She walked obediently into the huge house, hearing the whirring of the boat engine as it took off into the night. She wrapped her arms around herself and felt the coolness of the February air on her bare arms. She pulled open the back door to the house and entered, feeling an intense sensation of security the second she stepped inside. She trailed up the stairs, her red fingers tracing the wood of the railing as she felt that insatiable calm come over her, the same one she had felt after Singh. She pushed Rafes bedroom door open and felt more at home than she had in months, the girl wondering if it was because she was in the den of the monster or if it was because she had become one.

I'm going to try and get some updates out but there is probably like a 60-70% chance there will be a time skip after the next chapter so just be aware.
Still deciding if i want to keep this in the story or not so if you see it mysteriously disappear don't be too surprised. In light of that let me hear some feedback about it and just know that the possible time skip would be very beneficial for jjune. OK bye!
Also this is what I was picturing from Rafe this chapter
Okay bye again.
