"Is something going on with you and JJ again?" June March was laid across the boat, soaking in the sun whilst the others fished. The only other person who wanted to join her in tanning had been Sarah, giving the girls some much needed alone time. They hadn't had hardly any one on one time in weeks.
"What?" June turned her head to look at the Cameron girl, her lip curling up as she tried to wrack her brain for what she had done that would make Sarah say that to her. "Why would you think that?"
"Nothing I just noticed he doesn't have that sad little look on his face when he's looking at you...that's all." June swallowed hard, turning her head back up and reclosing her eyes. She didn't realize how easily they could tell his demeanor changed, and yet she hadn't mentioned anything about a difference in herself. June must've been the better actor...or at least thats what she was supposing.
"No...nothings going on." She cleared up, lying seamlessly through her teeth. She threw her arm over her face and attempted to keep her straight face, knowing that Sarah was watching her and could easily tell if she was lying.
"Well...good." Sarah said, turning her own face back towards the sun. However her words took a moment to sink into Junes brain, the March girl soon turning her head back to look at the Cameron girl.
"Good? Why good?" June asked, pushing up onto her elbows. The way that Sarah had said it, she had insinuated that things were better off if they weren't happening. And while Sarah was unaware, June was fully aware that things were in fact happening. Sarah opened her eyes for a second and saw the perplexed look on Junes face, the girl letting out a sigh and shaking her head.
"Nothing." June was not going to take nothing as an answer though, Sarah had pointed her in the directions of the doubts she was trying to stave off. Because now it wasn't just her own doubts...it was Sarah's too. And if Sarah had something to say in the way of her relationship, then that meant some of the others probably did too.
"No you already said it... tell me." Sarah let out another sigh at Junes request, realizing she had said too much. She pushed herself onto her own elbows and looked out at the water, hoping she could word it in a way that wouldn't offend June. She knew that JJ and Junes relationship was still a sore subject, and a topic of unwavering discussion amongst the group, due to their will they, won't they approach to it.
"Well it's—I love JJ and everything but you guys sometimes...you just bring out the worst in each other. And I mean...I've known you longer than anyone else here—I've seen you happy. I mean I know when you're happy and when you're not because you were happy with Ra...uh—but ever since—it's just that things are different between you guys. Sometimes things just aren't as great as they seem at first." June listened as Sarah stumbled over her words and blatantly admitted something no one had really been able to say. June blinked a few times as Sarah fueled that doubt she was trying to work through, her head turning away from the Cameron girl as she sat up. June pulled her knees to her chest and then gave Sarah a nod, a small worried smile flashing across her lips. "But it doesn't matter...because you guys aren't back together."
"Right." June felt sick to her stomach hearing the words Sarah said, but she attempted to not let them kill her. Instead she pushed herself up from the deck and looked down at the Cameron girl. Sarah thought it was rather obvious she had hit a nerve, a sigh leaving her lips as she started to speak.
"June listen... I didn't mean to—"
"No uh...you're right. You're probably right. I'm gonna...I've gotta go to the bathroom. But I'll grab you a drink on the way back up if you want?" The frown on Junes lips didn't do her any justice in convincing Sarah that she hadn't hurt her feelings, the March girl walking away with her arms wrapped around herself. She had a pit of sorrow in her stomach as she went down into the cabin, thinking about how nice this new boat was now that they had had the money to get one. It was nice having friends with boats. Sarah's words kept repeating in her mind, hearing that they brought out the worst in each other. Hearing that Sarah thought they were toxic. The thing that pushed her over the edge was the fact that Sarah had almost said she was happier with Rafe, before she had caught herself. June reached for the door to the restroom, feeling tears pull at her eyes for a moment...maybe she was jumping into something she shouldn't be. Maybe she should've just ignored the feeling that she couldn't escape, the feeling of being so desperately overwhelmed with love for him that she couldn't possibly spend another moment without being with him. Maybe she shouldn't have given—
"Well what do we have here?" The voice made her jump, Junes eyes widening as she look back at who had followed her. The smile on his lips clouded the thoughts in her head and she was suddenly unable to think of just how overwhelmed she was with worry. His eyes dropped over her body, the bathing suit she was wearing, and then his eyes lifted back up to her face. He shot towards her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pushing her gently against the door. "I saw you come down here."
"JJ...this is risky."
"What's life without a little risk?" His voice dropped low at the end when he leaned towards her, wanting to kiss her. He hadn't kissed her all day, he was longing for the taste of her lips. "You know one of my sayings...don't be sorry till you get caught."
JJ closed the space between them, his body pressed against hers as he kissed her. He felt better the second they were together, almost like she was a hit of caffeine to help him get through the rest of the day. June however, did not like his saying...the girl wondering if that stupid saying had been a contributor in the way he had been treating their issues since the beginning. She pulled back and he whined, trying to recapture her lips but being unable to. He pulled back with a soft and confused look on his face, his eyebrows furrowed as he extended his arm past her head and to the door behind her.
"What's wrong Carly?" His voice was soft and his eyes were trailing over the features of her face, the frown on her lips, the stormy look in her eyes. She tilted her head slightly and pushed some blonde hair from his eyes, her lips tightening into a straight line as she considered her question.
"Do you think we bring out the worst in each other?" The question caught him off guard immediately, his face scrunching up momentarily as he tried to figure out why she would say something like that. He stumbled over an answer as he saw her doubt materialize before him and he soon came to the upsetting conclusion that this may not be as easy as he thought it was going to be.
"Well I—" The sound of feet coming down the few steps startled both of them, JJ flying back from where he had entrapped her between himself and the door, his hand immediately going to the back of his neck as he pretended to be enjoying the unique pattern on a quilt. June moved from the door and to the cooler, pulling the top open and clearing her throat, the girl reaching in for a drink as whoever it was came down the stairs.
"Hey you two... what an interesting pair of people to be down here alone. You really like that quilt, don't you JJ?" The worst case scenario of who it could be was who it was, John B looking between the two of them with a viciously accusatory smile.
"I came down to get a drink." June said, lifting up the sodas for him to see. John B nodded but didn't seem convinced, his lips parting as he turned his head to JJ.
"So you guys were making out weren't you?"
"Gross man...just gross." Junes head snapped to JJ as his comment offended her, her face screwing up into a defensive glare. JJ shot a look over to her , expecting that he'd see approval, but was startled when he saw that she was glaring at him. His head turned back to John B and the blonde gulped, hoping he was just misreading the glare on her face.
"Well you guys get back to whatever you were doing...I was just coming for a drink." John B waltzed over to where June was, a sly smile on his lips as he pulled one of the drinks from the flustered girls hand. He reached up and ruffled her hair and then shot JJ a wink, the Routledge boy escaping up the stairs.
"Is it really that obvious?" JJ asked, scratching at the back of his neck as he dropped the blanket back into the seat. His head turned to June and he was one again shocked by how hostile she looked, her lips pursed as she pulled another drink out of the cooler.
"Gross? Really? You're such a dick." She said, starting towards the stairs but JJ was already pulling her back, his hands touching every bit of her that they could as he brought her back towards him.
"Come on baby, you know I was just trying to make it seem like we were still not—you know." June nodded at his words, knowing he didn't mean it. He was trying to go along with her plan...she knew he wasn't being serious.
"Alright." She went to move form his grip again but he pulled her back again, grabbing her by the head and knitting his fingers in her hair so she had to look at him. She gave him a confused look and he tilted his head down a little so she'd look into his eyes, his lips parting to speak as she focused on his eyes.
"And no...I don't think we bring out the worst in each other. I think we are good. We are good." She brought her hand up to grip his wrist and she rubbed her thumb over his pulse, attempting to release the lung crushing doubt and uncertainty. She attempted to breathe easier.
"Okay."
"Okay." He repeated, his thumb running over her cheek before he leaned forwards and pressed a kiss to her cheek, her forehead, the side of her head. He pulled back with a smile and she couldn't help but smile back, pulling his hands down and rolling her eyes at the giddy look in his face.
"Alright...back off." She joked, pushing him back only a little bit, the boy nodding and then standing at attention and giving her a salute. She chuckled as she walked back up the stairs, JJ taking his time to come up as he went back to fishing and she went back to Sarah.
"Here's your drink." June said on approach, holding the drink out for Sarah. The Cameron girl sat up, grabbing the can and cracking it open. June sat back down beside her, opening her own drink and taking a sip of the cool liquid.
"Hey I'm sorry...I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I'm just worried about you." June finally understood how hard it was going to be to keep this a secret, especially surrounded by the people who knew them the best. Sarah waited for June to say something back, her blonde hair flying in front of her face as the wind blew against their backs. June leaned forwards, shrugging her shoulders and looking over at her friend.
"I think I feel the best I have in awhile." Something the words felt rotten coming out of Junes mouth, but she still chose to believe them anyways, hoping they were true. It had been awhile since she had thought bad things, harmful things...and she hadn't had nightmares in awhile either. She thought there was nothing for Sarah to worry about. At least she hoped. June leaned to the side, laying her head on Sarah's shoulder and letting out a breath. The Cameron girl wrapped her arm up her chin and pat the side of her head, feeling a pang in her chest as June leaned on her. She really did love her. "But I appreciate your concern. And you didn't hurt my feelings. Just made me consider some things."
"So...is there something going on between you guys again?" June pulled back from Sarah's shoulder and let out a sigh, looking straight ahead and taking a sip of her drink before turning to look at the girl. She studied her face for a moment, considering her question. She could just blow it all right now, tell Sarah and let the girl talk some sense into her. Or she could let it progress and wait to tell, get so far into what may very well be a mistake...and then be too deep to have the courage to move on.
June looked at Sarah's face and for what felt like the first time ever she saw similarities in her face that reminded her of her brother, her lips pursing as she looked into her eyes. Thinking of Rafe in a moment like this is what caused her to shake her head, refusing to tell her what was really going on. She wanted to prove him wrong, prove to the Cameron boy that they weren't made for each other, that their souls weren't tied like he thought they were. So she shook her head, choosing JJ over anything else.
"No...we just had a big blowup the other day...has me questioning things."
"What happened?" Sarah asked, wanting to know what thought had filled the momentary silence. June looked at her, her fingers tapping against her can before she looked down at it and laughed, feeling unamused by the hard question.
"I think I need a beer."
