five.
"No I'm not saying that you should wear nothing I'm just saying that I would like it if you weren't wearing anything." Rafe Cameron was laid across his bed his hands fiddling with the strings of his sweatpants. June March was standing in the room, her eyes glued to the mirror as she looked at herself in a dress.
"Good thing you won't be there." The black dress she was wearing complimented her in so many different ways, but it just wasn't right. Rafe sat up, his eyebrows furrowed and a disturbed look on his face as he spoke.
"You're not taking me to Winter Formal? What the hell?" June looked at him through the reflection in the mirror and for a moment he looked serious, her face dropping. A jeering smile took over his lips and she rolled her eyes, Rafe laughing as he fell back down on the bed.
"You're not funny."
"And you can't take a joke." He said, letting out a small laugh. She let out a huff of air as she shook her head at her reflection, her stomach flipping as she recovered from the momentary panic she had. She thought about the conversation for a moment before she turned around, biting the inside of her cheek as she got an idea.
"You know...technically I could take you to my formal. I'm the only one of the group that goes to school there. No way any of them would even know. Other than—"
"Zach. Zach would know. Trust me, I already thought about it. It's a no go." Rafe sighed out, knowing that he could never do that to her. Showing up with her and rubbing it in Zachs face would be a major win, but he knew she wouldn't want that, so he did what was best for her. "Or you could just skip...and we could do something more fun than a stupid dance anyways."
June let out a hefty sigh as she dropped onto the bed beside him, exhausted from trying to hide the fact that things were good between them. Things weren't good between him and anyone, and in some ways she coveted that she was all his. She was too entranced by the good thing she had going with him and his progress, she would be completely blindsided if he snapped.
"What...like a date?" Rafe sat up, leaning on his elbow for support as he looked down at her. She looked up at him with a weary look and he was quick to shake his head.
"No...no not like a date. Gross...you think I'd wanna go on a date with you?"
"Yes. That's literally the whole point of my existence to you." He gave her a burning look and she smiled back at him, knowing that had been a jab at his ego. "What would it be like then?"
"Like an escape. We get away for a day and do something real. And leave this fucking island. And have some real fun without the pressure of not being seen or just that overwhelming terrible feeling that this place gives you." The tone in his voice gave her an unease, a bit of his anger sprinkled into it. She pushed that feeling away deep down, knowing that she had to trust him. She turned on her side, looking at the side of his face as he stared up at the ceiling. Looking at him like this was like looking at him when she was younger, the way that he had only gotten more defined with time. She remembered his old haircut, floppy hair and a goofy smile, before his dad started resenting him, before he learned about how the drugs can take the pain away. She was proud of him for stopping, once the drugs had turned his life upside down he got high on power, on the sadistic feeling that came with winning. But right now he didn't look like that person...he looked like the person she used to know, and this fact made her slight smile melt away, the girl wishing she could go back to a time before he ever hurt her, before he terrified her and took her and damaged her, before he left bruises on her neck and on her heart. Before he manipulated her. Before he ruined one of the only good things going for her. She hated thinking about JJ anymore but she couldn't help but think about him now, knowing that if Rafe hadn't have snuck into her room that night that they would've been fine. Knowing that if he had just left them alone, maybe JJ wouldn't have even ever known about what had happened between them. But she still couldn't find it in her to fully blame him, knowing that most of it was her own fault. Her lips were turned down into a frown now and she closed her eyes, wanting to see that old version of him again. She knew she was chasing something that didn't exist anymore. But she just couldn't help herself.
"Sounds like it could be fun. What's the escape plan?" June pushed the bad thoughts away and gave him a small smile, Rafes eyes lighting up at the sight of it.
"It's not like we need much of a plan. We get on the ferry, we disappear." He said, running a hand over his hair. He thought about the ferry times, figuring they could probably catch one first thing in the morning and just skip the entire day all together.
"And then what?"
"And then we do whatever we want, like I said. Get away from this place, away from your parents." Junes eyes flew to the bedside table of Rafes room, the magazine with the printed article in it sitting there. She felt her stomach hurt as she thought about how she had left, how she had been ignoring calls from her parents for 2 days now, how she was getting tired of sleeping in Sarah's bed, how she had turned to Rafe for company because she knew she needed to see him. "We could even get a motel. Stay the night somewhere else too. Might as well...it's not like we have anything waiting for us here."
"Yeah you're right...nothing to lose. Nothing at all." June said, her eyes on the ceiling as her heart ached in her chest. She thought of the only things she actually did have to lose, her sanity which was already fleeting, her new business which she had failed to hide— "You sent those lilies right? The peace lilies?"
"Did you like them?" June felt her heart drop for a moment as he confirmed that it was in fact him, her head turning to look at him as he gave her a half smile. There was something deeply sadistic behind his eyes that she didn't like at all, and she knew it was there because he had caught her, he had found out her big secret. "The place is really nice. It'll do great."
His fingers slid across the blanket and he knitted their hands together, the smile still on his face as she couldn't speak. She wasn't sure what had left her speechless but she knew she couldn't talk, maybe it being the fact that he had caught her and she had no idea how. There was a lump in her throat as she let him hold her hand, Rafe smiling up at the ceiling with a victorious look as he held her. She didn't often let him touch her like this, so he was rather thrilled at the fact he could feel her palm against his. Just this sensation alone fueled his love for her, and he hoped to god she never parted from him like this. They had a really good thing going.
"Yeah I think we should." She said in a tiny voice, his eyebrows quirking as he looked over at her. He was relieved she had said yes, although he was sure he would've gotten his way regardless. "We should get out of here. Have a fun day."
"Our great escape."
