fifty-six.
June March stood at the edge of the driveway, her lips turned down into a frown as she looked at the shitty house. She had been here once before, deep in the cut at Barry's house, and the last time she had visited it hadn't been a very good trip. However she knew this man was Rafes man with a plan, and she just happened to have a map that may or may not lead to some treasure she was tasked with finding.
She had laid in bed with JJ the night before, staring up at the ceiling and trying to convince herself to just let it go. But the hidden map was burning a hole in her pocket, and it was the intrigue of accomplishing the feat that was driving her, not the perspective of more money. In fact, she wasn't entirely sure what she would do with the money if she found it...but she was riddled with doubt that it even existed outside of a phony map and legend. The thought of accomplishing what Leon had asked her to do was a bittersweet expedition, her mind and heart convincing her of two different things.
She stood before the house with that same frown, wondering what she had done that had led her to this exact moment. She was sure Rafe wasn't here, but that she even cared at this point, they were in the same position at the moment as they had been the first time they had broken up. It was like they didn't even know the other existed, only on passing, only as acquaintances. Her heart beat for one boy and him only, JJ finally breaking through that wall and capturing her love again. And June didn't think there was a single thing anyone, including Rafe, could do about that at the moment.
But that didn't mean she didn't think of him. Thinking of him led her directly to where she was, her eyes lowing to the gravel and then a gruff sigh leaving her lips as she tried to put together her proposition. Barry was a character, someone she didn't have much of a relationship with, someone who had threatened and tried to kill her before...not that that ever stopped her from doing anything else. Still there wasn't any good history there, June shaking off her nerves as she approached the front door.
Her hand lifted and she knocked before she could talk herself out of it, her face pale as she looked at the door. There was an unintelligible shout and then she heard footsteps, the door swinging open.
"Just the guy I was looking for." She said instantly, his facing contouring into one of amusement as he saw who was standing on his doorstep. His eyes dropped over her and he was quick with his smart remark, June balling her fists at her sides.
"Your boyfriend isn't here, trouble...maybe you should check the country club...or that nice catty boat he's always on." He leaned against his front door frame, her lips pursing before she shot back. The mention of her 'boyfriend' didn't get to her the way he thought it would, considering her knew very well that they were nowhere near together.
"Actually I'm here for you." June said, taking pride in the face he made that held the tiniest bit of surprise. Her lips turned up into a smirk of her own and she tilted her head, feeling confidence in her mission now.
"And to what do I owe this pleasure? What you here for? Wanna make a deal or somethin'?" He asked, genuinely curious as to what she was here for him for. Her lips only grew into a bigger smile as she nodded, Barry looked genuinely confused as his smirk dropped.
"I do...I do want to make a deal." There was a tense air between them before Barry shifted uncomfortably, his head slightly shaking and then his lips parting.
"And what would queen kook bitch need from me? You're more than capable, I've seen it firsthand. Not to mention you got that boy wrapped around your finger—if you asked him to jump he sure as hell would do it without a second thought." June sneered at him calling a bitch but didn't take it to heart, knowing she's been called worse by people she actually cared about. Her eyes shifted past him and she blinked, letting out a short sigh.
"Clearly I don't want his help, or else I'd be on his doorstep and not yours. Now are you going to hear me out or not?" The silence enveloped them again and Barry was too curious to not give in, his lip turning up into that same egotistical amused smile he always held. He clicked his tongue and took a step back, lifting his arm to gesture towards the inside of his home. June didn't hesitate to walk inside, the territory not exactly uncharted. Barry looked left and right outside his door before he shut it, June standing near a shitty old couch.
"Take a seat." At his instruction she did as she was told, not a the slight nerves starting to bite at her now that she had actually made it inside. Her palms got a little sweaty but she just wiped them across her jeans, running a hand over her hair as he walked towards a kitchen area. "You thirsty? I got iced tea and I got a beer...but I doubt you're old enough to drink the beer."
"Didn't take you as the type to tell me I couldn't drink a beer because I'm underage." June said, wanting to laugh at what felt like a reprimanding from the island drug dealer. He shook his head as he looked at her, clearing up the confusion.
"Nah I didn't tell you couldn't, just said you weren't old enough." She actually managed an amused smile, thinking it was funny that he was acting like he might have a care.
"Right...right. Yeah I'll take the iced tea though." There was silence and rustling in the kitchen and then he entered with two glasses of iced tea, June accepting it and feeling surprised that he had offered her something to drink. "You're surprisingly hospitable...if I didn't know better I'd think you were a nice guy."
"I am a nice guy...I'm just opportunistic." He said, sitting in a lawn chair across from her. He leaned back and took a sip of his drink, June shifting her legs uncomfortably and then furrowing her eyebrows.
"Opportunistic?" His cocky smirk returned and he leaned back and relax, only making her more tense. She tried to remind herself that she had the power here, she was the one offering him the opportunity he was speaking of.
"I see the opportunity for money and I take it. You're the same way...that's why you're here isn't it? You have the opportunity for something, but you need my help. Now comes my turn to see if I'm interested in what you have to offer." He studied her face and then dropped his eyes over her, not in an uncomfortable way but in a calculative way, June shifting again as she tilted her head at him.
"You know you're smarter than you look." She said, taking a sip of her tea. It was surprisingly good, the sweet liquid slipping down her throat and giving her a little more confidence in her words now that her throat wasn't dry. He once again was amused at her words, leaning forwards in his chair and pointing towards her with his free hand.
"And you're sneakier than you look. Always got something up your sleeve, can't tell what your next move is gonna be—hell I didn't even know I would have to worry about seeing your ass over here on the cut. And yet here you are."
"Here I am." She said in her own confidence, extending her arm as of to show him physically that she was there. His eyebrow quirked and looked down at the floor, his shoe sliding across the floor as he scratched at the back of his head. A thought struck him and he looked back up at her, wanting to push the limits to the conversation.
"Not to mention how badly you got my boy messed up. All that shit just to find out that you ain't even fucking with him like that no more, it's crazy...got his crazy ass pacing around his mansion 24/7 like he's some supervillain trying to come up with some plan to get back at you. Maybe I oughta let him know you're untouchable." June felt a chill go down her spine at the continued conversation of Rafe, but she half expected it, knowing the two of them had some kind of friendship that doubled as a partnership.
"Maybe you should."
"Y'all's little friends took me and my ass on one little ride last year. And to think all that shit started because Rafes daddy ran out of money." Junes eyebrows pulled together and she wasn't entirely sure what he was talking about, but then he proceeded to speak. "But you give somebody like that initiative and everything goes to shit. So I'm not surprised how it all turned out."
"It doesn't matter now anyways...Wards dead. John Bs dad is dead, that problem has been solved. It's over." June said, but the second it left her lips she knew she sounded stupid and naive, Barry immediately calling her out on it. She knew it wasn't over. The words had been drilled endlessly into her head.
"If it's over then you haven't been paying attention." Barry said, shaking his head at her. June leaned forwards a little bit, wanting to know what he knew about it.
"What do you mean?"
"Man, I mean Rafe has been up daddy's ass since the beginning and you think now he's just gonna be fine now that he's gone? Not only is he gone but he lost his girl too...and now he's sitting up there in that big house alone like some kind of ghost—plottin' something against the people who killed his daddy and stole his sister. Who else he gonna blame other than the bitch who left him, the dude who she's fucking, and the group of kids who ruined his life?" Barry said, a smirk on his lips as he shook his head twice. He brought the glass of tea to his lips and looked at the mortified look that was sneaking across her face, his words making more sense than she cared to admit. "All I'm saying is that you better enjoy this peace now because you've got a big ole shit storm coming your way once he gets something together."
"Are you threatening me or something?" She said with an edge in her voice, but Barry didn't seem too concerned with it.
"Nah...I'm telling you. You should know I'm right...and I'm sure Sarah knows it too. He doesn't just let shit go." If there was one thing June knew, it was that Rafe didn't let things go. Barry was 100% correct, and she hated it...so she chose to move on, swallowing hard and pushing a hair behind her ear.
"I didn't come here to talk to you about Rafe..." She said, Barry noting the way she had swallowed hard, her face a flushed color as she changed the subject. He went with it though, knowing what he already knew was satisfactory enough for him.
"Then what'd you come here to chat about? Oh right...you want me to do something. What's up?" He leaned back again, June putting on a steely expression to commission him for this.
"Money. It's hidden somewhere in Virginia. I got a map and I—"
"You think I'm Indiana Jones or somethin'? The fuck do you want me to do about it?" He seemed proud of his quip, June rolling her eyes and trying to finish what she was saying.
"You find it you get half...it's not really about the money." It was true, she didn't need the money...it was more the fact that she wanted to end what she had started with Leon. It was a mental thing. A closure thing.
"So you doing this for like a hobby or some shit now?" Barry didn't seem impressed, scratching at the back of his neck as she shrugged
"Something like that." There was that silence again, his eyes tracing over her face and how easily she had become devoid of emotion. His lips tightened into a straight line and he thought about it, knowing he had nothing better to do. He shook his head and then sighed, running a hand over his face and then accepting her offer.
"Tell me what I need to do."
