Econ Project

If you are brave read this project a friend and I did for our economics class. We were supposed to create an island and talk about its economic system and industries and stuff like that. It's brilliant.

Government & Goals For The Nation- Welcome to Aloha Island

The country of Aloha Island is an extremely exclusive communist representative democracy made up of only the finest musicians and their families. Along with hello and goodbye, aloha also means music in Hawaiian. All the property is owned by the government, but the people have an extremely important say in government matters. The government looks out for the best interest of the people and is not just power hungry.

The government has a president, 3 presidential advisors, 5 representatives of the people, one judge, and one ambassador to the turtles. The president is Paul McCartney and he appointed Beyoncé, Keith Richards, and Bruce Springsteen as his advisors. The representatives of the people are Madonna, Ozzy Osbourne, Luke Bryan, Sting, and Billie Joe Armstrong. The judge has to be  appointed unanimously by the people and is legendary Bob Dylan. The ambassador to the turtles is Eric Clapton. Other musicians in the population include Adele, Jimmy Page, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Britney Spears, Macklemore, Pete Wentz, Flo Rida, Jon Bon Jovi, and more. The musicians are allowed to bring their significant other and their children, but Aloha Island is a very exclusive community.

The main industry of Aloha Island is turtle herding. Everything on Aloha Island revolves around turtles. Turtles unhatched turtle eggs help fertilize the sandy soil allowing crops to be grown to provide food to the island's citizens, and when a turtle dies its shell is broken into pieces and is used as the currency of Aloha Island. The currency is rarely used because Aloha Island has a highly developed communist democracy. At the end of each month, each musician receives 10 turtles to herd from the turtle nursery to replace the turtles that died. It is the ambassador to the turtles job to make sure that the turtles are being well taken care of and that each musician is getting their monthly 10 turtles.

Aloha island is a very tightly knit community, with weekly jam sessions to bring all the citizens together.

In 2016, the Aloha Country Department of Cash (ACDC), declared that the economy was doing very well. The country is moving towards making their turtle herding industry more successful, and towards granting citizenship to more musicians who arrive on the Island.

Aloha island also wants to open up ports for trading. With ports, people from other countries can ride their rafts to Aloha island, and trade with the people of Aloha island. For example, a merchant from Hawaii could sail to Aloha island, visit one of the ports, and trade with a citizen of Aloha island. For example, 3 turtles can be traded for a necklace, a bottle of Sprite, 3 blankets, and a steak. Turtles are a very valuable resource.

Currently, Aloha island has no trading partners, but they are working to build an alliance with Hawaii, so they can get more resources on Aloha island. Quality of life would be improved if resources were brought into the island. For example, with metal pipes, each citizen of Aloha island could have running water.

Aloha Island is a growing power and want to influence other groups of people to form more communist democracies.

Scarcity

At any given time, each musician should have 100 turtles or more. Since there is always 30-40 musicians on the island, there should always be more than 3,000 turtles. The government takes a turtle census every 2 years. Scarcity is defined when there are less than 3,000 turtles on the island. The most recent incident of scarcity was last year.

Scarcity is dealt with by putting lettuce on the shores so more turtles will be attracted to Aloha island and migrate there. During times of scarcity the ambassador to the turtles, Eric Clapton, demands musicians carefully watch newly laid turtle eggs and give them the finest care. This allows more turtle to hatch than they normally would, helping raise the turtle population. But the diminished amount of turtle eggs that dont hatch means the sandy soil is less fertile so the amount of crops grown decreases. The decrease in vegetables produced at the community garden causes some hunger until the turtle population has increased to a healthy level. The short time of hunger is worth it because without a large amount of turtles the soil would become very infertile.

Factors of Production

The founding members of Aloha Island discovered that the only thing all musicians are good at besides music is turtle herding. So Aloha Islands main industry if turtle herding. Each musician has 100 or more turtles that they are supposed to tend to. The turtles are marked to determine which musician they belong to. The turtles roam the Island during the day and then are required to be herded to a safe pasture at the center of the island. The most successful way of herding is taking long sticks and sticking lettuce to them with sap. The turtles follow the sticks because they want the lettuce. The turtles mainly feed off of sea plants that naturally grow in the ocean surrounding Aloha Island but they also eat the lettuce grown in the community garden.

The citizens that are not musicians, the musicians families, work at the community garden. They harvest and water the plants used to feed the citizens and the turtles. They cultivate plants like arugula, swiss chard, bamboo shoots, potatoes, snap peas, and rhubarb. The community garden isnt just for gardening, though. It is a gathering place. In front of the community garden is a vast lawn overlooking the sparkling cobalt blue sea, citizens can come and go as they please. Town meetings are held outside the garden every week and many government officials speak.

Incentives

Turtle herding is important because the more turtles the more fertile the sandy soil is, the more crops can be grown. Many eggs the turtles lay do not hatch end up decomposing in the dirt. This gives the soil lots of nutrients which allows the government run gardens to flourish. Turtle herding is extremely competitive because each month the judge, Bob Dylan, chooses the best turtle herder and they are allowed to lead the weekly jam sessions for that month. These jam sessions help bring the community together despite differences in genres of music.  The government will sometimes commission some of its citizens to create musical instruments out of the resources found on the island. If the instrument is deemed successful the musician is given first pick of the turtles at the next turtle distribution.

Three times a day, each citizen receives a meal freshly picked from the community garden. Usually they are provided with a fresh garden salad with sea salt, but sometimes, if they are lucky, they get warm soup. The judge and Ambassador to the Turtles choose who has been doing a good job turtle herding and they are more likely to get warm soup. This gives the musicians motivation to herd turtles very well so they can get the warm soup.

Private vs. Common (who owns the resources)

The materialistic resources found on Aloha island (such as water, wood, and metals) are owned by the government because Aloha island is a communist democracy. Other resources like knowledge, and talent are owned by the citizens individually. Because Aloha island is a communist democracy, all of Aloha islands resources are kept in one common shed. Citizens can grab resources from the shed of resources as long as they are going to use the resources for a good cause.

Each citizen gets an equal plot of land that they own. This plot of land has a house, a yard, and a couple trees on it. These residential plots of land are in the coastal sector of aloha island. All the other land that is not in the middle sector is operated by the government, and is open for the public and turtles to roam. The weekly jam sessions are hosted in the north sector of the country, near the garden (see map).  The turtle hatchery and nursery is located in the east sector.

Additional Materials: History Of Aloha Island

Disclaimer: this is just extra stories Mara and Mihika created during the process of this project. Please do not grade this as part of the project but feel free to have some laughs and learn more about Aloha Island.

The Story of Britney Spears:

The year was 2007, and all of Britney Spears friends were annoyed by her. For one, she had dyed her hair a horrible shade of brown, had a total meltdown, and was living off thirty cent ramen. They decided they needed to get rid of her.

The plan was perfect. They would invite Britney to a yacht party in Hawaii in celebration of Britney's friends birthday. They would have a photoshoot on the deck of the ship, and push Britney overboard afterwards.

The plan went perfectly. At 5:00 p.m. Britneys best friend Rose had the honor of shoving her overboard into the rough choppy waves. As soon as Britney hit the water, her friends steered the boat back to Hawaii, leaving Britney stranded.

Britney was terrified, she had only been stranded 2 times before, once in the Mariana Trench and once in the bermuda triangle. Being stranded 5 miles off the coast of Hawaii was definitely the worst stranding experience.

She cried for 6 whole minutes before seeing a turtle. She had taken a course on turtle-nese at Harvard taught by Steve Swinburne, and was fluent. She convinced the turtle to lead her back to Hawaii. However, since her American accent when speaking turtle-nese was so thick, the turtle thought she was saying Aloha and not Hawaii.

At the time, Aloha island had nobody on it. Britney decided more people should live on it, so she sent messages in plastic water bottles and sent them out to sea. 5 years later, Aloha island was bustling with musicians.

Britney ended up leaving Aloha island and moving back to Alabama by canoe.

The Story of Brian May and the Turtle Flu:

It was a hot July morning and Brian May woke up, he got out of his wooden bunk bed, and went out to his yard. Yawning, he counted the number of turtles he had, Same as yesterday. He noticed some of the turtles had their eyes closed. He walked up to his favorite turtle, a majestic emerald green turtle named Tortoise, and shook the turtles shell gently. The turtle did not move. He went up to his second favorite turtle, named Mackle-less and shook the turtles shell gently, it did not move either.

Brian shrugged. Maybe they were tired. He never saw them sleeping, maybe they were just asleep. As usual, Brian was wrong.

They had died, of the turtle flu. To prevent this from happening to any other musicians, Brian ended his legendary music career and dedicated his life to eradicating the turtle flu. Since then, turtle flu has been relatively contained, with everybody being vaccinated before being naturalized.

This is the wonderful Island project of Mara and Mihika. I applaud you if you actually read the whole thing.
