This takes place between Battle Of The Labyrinth and The Last Olympian.
Also in Annabeth's POV
"I have to what!" I yelled at Chiron.
Percy was standing stock still beside me.
"Look I know it's uncomfortable but it's the best cover story." Chiron calmly explained.
"So we have to date!" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "Couldn't we just go out like friends or something, like normal. Why do we have to pretend to be a couple!"
"Because the location of this power source is coming from a movie theatre in downtown New York, going as a couple provides more cover."
Percy finally spoke up. "Wait hold on, why are we even looking into this whole weird power source. From my experience, if it's anything supernatural they don't exactly liked to be bothered so maybe we should refrain from poking it with a stick."
"If it is a monster or anything else it could endanger the mortals in the city and draw other monsters to it's source."
"But Chiro-"
"Enough, everything has been decided and there aren't going to be any changes. Now I would go get ready if I were you."
I turned on my feel and marched out of the big house towards the Athena cabin with Percy calling my name behind me. I slammed the door behind me and flopped down onto my bed, the empty cabin making my thoughts seem even louder.
It wasn't that I hated Percy or anything but things were already so complicated between us. I still wasn't sure about my feelings for him and now we had to pretend to go on a date, this was just going to make things even more awkward.
"Annabeth?" Percy's voice called from outside my cabin door. "Annabeth, what's wrong?"
I didn't answer but lay there on my bed, still fuming about how complicating things were about to become.
__give this time skip a name__
I trudged up the hill towards Thalia's tree, well it technically wasn't her tree anymore since she was... Would you call it alive again? Oh you know what I mean, anyways we still called it that just for simplicity.
"Annabeth," Percy came up behind me, his bag resting over his shoulder. "You ready?"
"Yup," I replied curtly before heading off in the direction of the car at the bottom of the hill. I didn't mean to be rude but I didn't want to make anything about this mission more complicated than it was about to become.
The ride into the city was spent in uncomfortable silence, as Argus didn't talk like... at all and Percy kept his head turned out the window watching the passing scenery.
____Woo another one!____
"Well, ummm I guess we're early," Percy shrugged as we watched Argus turn the corner. "The movie Chiron got us tickets for doesn't start till 7:30 and it's only 5:00..."
"Well it can't hurt to check things out."
We made our way over to the cinema and walked inside the front doors. The smell of popcorn and the screams of little kids in the arcade greeting us.
I did a 360 on the spot, looking to see if anything stood out as magical right away. "Feel any different?" I asked Percy who shrugged and continued to squint at the passing people.
"Not really, everything seems the same."
"Yup," I replied. "Even the smell hasn't changed." I laughed as Percy glared at me before turning towards the arcade.
"Wanna pass the time?"
__should this be a time skip?__
"How are you so good at this?" Percy gritted his teeth as he took aim again squinting before he pulled the trigger on the plastic gun. We were playing one of those shooting games where you have to hit the deer."
I chuckled. "I'm a natural at anything lethal, hand me a weapon and I can guarantee I could kill you with it in 10 seconds."
"Oh I don't doubt that." Percy replied as he shot again, his bullet missing the pixelated deer by 16 feet.
"You're out of practise Seaweed Brain."
"Oh please, hand me a sword and I'd be done within a matter of minutes."
"Would you really?" I teased as the game ended. We set our guns back in their fake holsters and made our way out of the arcade. We'd been fooling around for almost an hour while keeping a look out for anything suspicious and nothing.
"You know if Grover was here, he'd be so disappointed right now." Percy laughed.
"He would, wouldn't he?" I cringed. "Sorry Grover." I whispered into the air.
Percy rolled his eyes and waited a few minutes. "Okay I'm still getting nothing maybe we should look around a bit."
"How? Are we just gonna break into the maintenance closet or whatever with some fake moustaches and pretend we work here?" I asked.
Percy seemed to consider something before saying. "You know personally I always considered myself as more of a goatee kind of guy."
I stared at him worried that he wasn't joking until he smiled at me.
"In kidding." He elbowed me lightly before continuing. "Can we go outside? The noise is giving me a headache."
I nodded, the sounds were getting pretty annoying with all the ringing bells and video game sounds and talking.
We turned the corner of the building outside before Percy sat down on the pavement and rested his head against the wall, closing his eyes.
"Hey?" I asked, sitting down beside him. "You okay?"
He opened one of his eyes to look at me and slightly smiled before closing them again. "Me? I'm fine, it's you that's been all weird lately."
"Me?" I exclaimed. "I haven't been acting weird!"
"Yes you have." Percy sighed. "You barely talked to me the entire ride in, and you just seemed so mad and I can't help but wonder why pretending to date me makes you so angry. Am I really that bad?"
His words made my heart break, I hadn't realized that while I had been so caught up with my feelings and trying to avoid falling even further for him, I had been hurting him in the process.
I leaned over and kissed his cheek lightly.
"What was that for?" He turned to look at me and I smiled apologetically.
"It's not that I hate the idea of going on a date with you, you're actually not bad at all, you're funny and spontaneous and not too bad in the look category. Any girl would be lucky to date you, it's just-" I sighed, how could I even explain it. "It's just things have been so... different between us, and I like where we are right now and I like how close we are and I don't want to ruin it."
"Why would us dating ruin it?" He asked his bright green eyes making my heart jump. I didn't know if he was implying what I thought he was but before I could say anything, he leaned forwards and kissed my cheek too, this time lingering a few seconds before he pulled away.
"I get what you're saying. And for the record, any guy would be lucky to date you too." He smiled at me and I couldn't help but smile back. I soon found myself leaning forwards and I think he was doing the same until an explosion burst through the wall 10 feet to the right. A monster that seemed half lion, half something else, a bird maybe? It roared in defiance.
"Well I guess we found the weird power source." Percy said before taking off, Riptide gleaming his hand and me running right behind him. Just like before.
