Chapter 59 - You're my Ex
"Where did you sleep last night?"
Ally waited for a response, not surprised that it never came. Kane had gotten back home the next morning, dragging his feet to the bedroom and flopping onto his bed, squeezing himself into a ball under his blanket. He had not returned home the night before, and they had called them multiple times to no answer. The only reason Tessa didn't call the police was because she received a text from him saying that he was fine and needed time alone.
The moment he was bundled underneath his covers, Tessa walked inside the room without saying anything. She glanced towards Ally who was eyeing him with narrowed eyes, and she waved her hand, motioning for her to follow outside the room. When Ally walked out, Tessa closed the door to the bedroom and faced her, "Leave him alone for a little, alright?"
Ally slowly nodded her head, glancing towards the closed door. "I'm worried about him; he's been shaking up these past few days. I think it has something to do with what I said to him."
"No," Tessa wrapped an arm around her shoulders, "don't worry about it okay? I'll handle it."
There must have been something that happened though that Ally could not wrap her finger around, and the only people she could really speak to was either Jasper, since he was the one talked about, or Jay, since he was Kane's closest friend at this point. Part of her wanted to avoid the whole problem and let Kane be for some time, but her sisterly protective side wanted to know who had acted out of line and caused him to show up in such a gloom this morning. She couldn't get rid of the way his face appeared, in such dark shadows with his lifeless eyes almost appearing black. He barely even walked, dragging his feet as if nothing around him mattered anymore.
Ally walked through the halls trying to find Jay, but it was clear he wasn't at school. She knew his regular routes since Jay was obsessed in knowing them; she knew which corners he always crossed and from which direction, but she didn't see him anywhere. Her only other option was Jasper, the one she didn't really want to admit she had been the one to ask Jay to start avoiding him.
Regardless, Kane was more important than a few seconds of embarrassment, and Ally didn't hesitate to approach Jasper during their lunch hour and ask him to meet with her outside the school. When they stepped outside the back door, Jasper instantly noticed the empty bench and raised an eyebrow, "Kane and Jay usually sit there. Where's Kane?"
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about."
Jasper turned to face her, his hands in the front pockets of his black sweats. It had always been difficult being around him; he seemed to be in such thrilled happiness while she cried for weeks after their breakup, still hoping that he would come back and say that he did love her and they would be together, as he had promised.
She will never forget the day she found out the truth about him, about who he really liked. Even so, she still helped him in covering his tracks, even if it meant ruining Jay's entire life in the process—it was because she loved him. She couldn't get rid of the image of his sleeping face beside her, his parted lips blowing air against her forehead and how he lethargically reached around her waist and cradled her as if she was the only thing that mattered.
She remembered sitting at the corner of the bathtub and running her fingers through his hair filled with bubbles of shampoo, and how he grabbed her arm and threw her inside, the water splashing all over that Mike banned him from coming over for a week. Mike loved him too much though that he came the next day, apologized and they started throwing a football at one another.
Ally really thought she had found the one, and she still did. But as for Jasper, the way he eyed her had changed, as if he never really saw her that way, and never would. That she was another girl he had dated, another one he had slept with, another one among the others.
She turned away from his piercing green eyes, preventing him from revealing everything by merely stating at her. "What happened with Kane last night?"
Jasper frowned. That was one thing he had not heard about—he did his homework about anyone that he was interested in, but this was the first time he heard news before he knew it already. "What do you mean?" She immediately knew she messed up, and when she attempted to turn away, he reached for her forearm, "No, you can't do that. Tell me what happened."
After a long sigh, she faced him against but only stated at her leaves on the ground. "Kane spent the night somewhere and came back pretty bad."
"He was beat up?"
"No," she noticed all his muscles tighten already, his shoulders broadened right away. "He seems...heartbroken."
"Oh," Jasper's face fell. "That meant he really did like Jay, that liar."
Ally raised an eyebrow, "What are you talking about?"
"Well your brother tried basically dumping me before of that scrawny brat." Jasper sent his fingers through his curls, feeling a bit of anger rush through him, "There's no way I was going to let him embarrass me like that so I told Jay everything I knew."
Ally paused for a moment, her face switching into horror. "What do you mean, everything you knew?"
"I told Jay everything. How Kane kissed Ava, the hotel meet up they had planned, how they hung out one night, how I had sex with him a few times. How—" He was interrupted but a sudden smack that crossed his lips. He was stunned, unsure what had happened and only realized when he pressed his chin and it started stinging.
He took a step back, "What the hell was that for?!"
"You had no right to tell him any of that!" She screamed, a few chirping birds fleeing from the trees around them. "Absolutely no right!"
"Jay had a right to know! Besides, he was the reason Kane dropped me anyway!"
"No, I was the reason Kane dropped you." When Jasper didn't respond, his face twisting in confusion, she gulped and stated away from him. She had told herself she would never cry over Jasper again, but it was always difficult admitting her feeling to him. "I told him to stop talking to you."
Jasper furrowed his brows, "Why the hell would you do that? I actually like this guy."
"Because you're my ex, Jasper."
"Ally, you've hooked up with one of my best friends right after we broke up and I didn't say anything—"
"Because you weren't in love with me anymore."
"Exactly my point, it shouldn't matter—"
"I'm still in love with you, Jasper!"
