Chapter 53 - Your Life
"Where d'you go last night?" Ally was putting on her socks, sitting on her bed when she confronted Kane while he was returning from his shower. He still had water dripping from the corner of his face and only had a towel around his waist, drying his hair by patting down on his head. He then shook his head, sprinkles of water hitting Ally in the face who grimaced and wiped it off, the scent of axe shampoo suddenly swarming her. "It was Jasper, wasn't it?"
"I told you I stopped talking to him," Kane replied, putting on his boxers before his sweats and finally removing the towel around his waist.
Ally stood from the bed, heading towards her closet to pick out a sweater, "So who was it?"
He was looking through his piles of t-shirts on the floor when he straightened his spine and eyed her for a minute, frowning, "Why are you so in my business lately?"
"You don't have to tell me," she shrugged her shoulders, putting on her sweater. "I'm just curious, that's all."
"What's going on?" Kane stepped towards her, his wet hair glistening from the slight reflection from the morning sun.
Ally raised an eyebrow, "What?"
He furrowed his brows, "What are you so interested in my life?"
"Kane, I was just asking, that's all." Her tone tightened and his lips sealed into a tight line. "You don't have to tell me."
"It was Ava," he exhaled, letting down his walls.
Ally's eyes instantly widened, "Aren't they dating right now? What did she want?"
"She begged for me not to tell Jay what happened between her and I."
"No, you have to tell her."
"You do have to tell her Kane," Tessa walked by their door, but as she was walking past, she paused and stepped backwards, eyeing Kane. She stood by the entrance, noticing a strange contortion on his face, "Baby, are you okay?" He glanced towards his mother, and the moment they met each other's gaze, she knew there was something heavily off. She stepped inside the room, "Let's go talk over breakfast or something."
His mother was always like this, taking the time to listen to him and making sure he was healthy first before letting him off to fend for himself. At the moment, although he wanted to decline and not have her involved in his problems again, he needed someone that he could trust and that had always been there for him. The best advice always came from her anyway. "I wouldn't mind that."
"Okay, let me go get ready and then we can head out," she patted his shoulder before walking back to her bedroom.
Ally knew there was something wrong with him too, assuming it had to be with Jasper, a request she could not take back. She sighed though, not sure if having him be this gloomy around her was worth it. "Kane, if Jasper means that much to you, then I can get over it—"
"It's not him Ally," Kane scratched the side of his face, although Jasper did have a bit of an effect on him. Not being able to be around him at all and acting as if their weekend had meant nothing was painful, but Ally was more important than that. "Don't worry."
"Then what is it? Is it Jay? What did he do—?"
"Don't, stop," he faced her rapidly. "Just leave it alone, okay?"
She glanced at her feet, biting her bottom lip before quietly replying, "Okay."
The moment Tessa was ready, she called for Kane and he followed her to the car, hopping into the driver seat and waiting until he was buckled to pull away from the driveway. As they drove past the roads and left the houses to reach downtown where all the restaurants were, Tessa always stated at the scenery in awe. There was one huge skyscraper that she always wanted to visit when they had time but never did. They drove past the bar they had gone to a few weeks ago, and Tessa motioned towards it, "We should go out for a night again, it was fun. I haven't played pool in a while."
"I'm still better than you."
"Your dad used to whoop my ass in pool," Tessa giggled, glancing towards Kane for a moment and seeing him smirk. "He used to not have any sympathy either, would beat me in one round and still want to play."
Kane leaned forward towards his dashboard, "I would do the same if I was that good."
"I know you would. We're here," she finally turned to the parking lot of Crepe Diner, a breakfast place that sold crepes and that she was craving for a while. "Ready?"
"Yes ma'am," and he left the car, shutting the door behind him and hearing the click once his mother locked the doors.
The moment they sat down and ordered their food, she grabbed her water and drank a few sips before finally eyeing him, "Talk to me, what's going on?"
"Mom, I messed up."
"What happened?"
He hadn't spoken to his mother about the relationships he had with guys, and it was not something he was proud of hiding. He knew she would accept her no matter what but he felt as if he was disappointing her, another burden after his father had died that he was resting on his shoulders.
However, before he could say anything, she sighed and said, "I already know, Kane." He had always seen his mother as a hero, and this was just one more instance of why he was grateful that he had Tessa. "You know I know."
"I was...I wasn't trying to...hide it from you...I just...I don't know..."
"You don't have to explain it," she smiled, reaching over and pushing a strand of black hair away from his face, reminded her of the same motion she had done to his father. "Tell me then, what's going on?"
"Ally's ex-boyfriend; I started seeing him and I like him but she told me to stop hanging around him."
Tessa's lips went down, "That must be hard for you. It's up to you though, if you want to respect your sister's wishes then that's okay. But at the end of the day, it's your life and you're allowed to love whoever you want to love."
