Chapter 20 - Little Lady
Kane had been pounding on Jay's apartment door for an hour now, to no luck. He knew Jay would be upset with him, and although he had no idea why Jasper and Ally had done any of these horrendous things, he liked Jay as a friend and wanted to make sure he was alright. They hadn't spoken ever since the kiss, but at that moment, he didn't care that they had kissed and instead wanted to ascertain the well-being of his friend.
Kane knocked again, "Open this door Jay!"
"Shut up!" Suddenly, a door burst open from the apartment door beside Jay's, and when Kane turned, he raised an eyebrow, seeing an elderly woman start walking up to him with a wooden spatula. Her legs were quivering with every step, and she glared at Kane, "Do you know what time it is?!"
"Listen little lady, I'm not in the mood—"
"Little lady?!" she lifted the wooden spatula over her head, "You better take that back young man. You're the one that's screaming while I'm trying to sleep!"
"It's literally 5:30 of the afternoon..."
"And people are sleeping!"
"I promise you," Kane rolled his eyes, "you're the only one sleeping. Let's not be dramatic, how about it?"
"All you young men these days are not gentlemen, you speak to ladies in ridiculous ways. So disrespectful—"
"And all you old wrinkly losers always have a problem with something. Just go back to your apartment, okay?"
"I swear I will—"
"I'm so sorry Lady May," Jay's door shot open and he stepped in front of Kane. He forced a smile, and Lady May lowered her wooden spatula to her side. The moment she saw Jay, she smiled but then met the navy eyes of Kane and felt her anger start to boil again. Before that happened, Jay began shoving Kane inside his apartment, "it won't happen again, I promise."
"Jaylin, you need to find better friends than that guy, he's an epitome."
"Jay has to find better neighbours than a great grandma. By the way, how was the First World War—" the door slammed before Lady May could respond, and they heard a few curses but before her footsteps faded away and her door was closed. Jay hadn't turned to face him yet, but the way his shoulders trembled, and his breathing seemed to grow heavier every second, Kane knew he was furious.
"She was being an asshole Jay." Jay didn't respond, instead he leaned his forehead against the door. His heavy breathing did not slow down, and after a few seconds, Kane stepped forward, "Show me what they did to you."
Jay slowly turned, and Kane inhaled a sharp breath, his jaw squeezing his teeth together. Jay's entire cheek was bruised, a nasty purple with vomit green around it. It was starting to swell as well, and there was a cut on his lip. The worse was not the physical injuries, it was Jay's eyes. Kane had never seen them in this way; they appeared empty, a fragile light broken and left into an abyss of darkness.
"You can leave now, she's back in her apartment," Jay quietly said, a lifeless tone speaking before he began making his way past Kane.
Kane grabbed his wrist, "Jay, please—"
"Do not," he swung his arm, throwing Kane's grip away, "touch me." The rage that burst behind Jay gaze, as if Kane had been an enemy he hated for years, made him gulp. "I asked you to leave, so leave. Now."
He stormed past Kane, heading towards his bedroom, but Kane was not one to be let down without a fight. He reached Jay before he could lock himself in his bedroom, and forcefully grabbed his wrist, and when Jay struggled to free himself, Kane only held harder.
Jay knew he would never overpower Kane, and instead gritted his teeth, "What the fuck don't you understand from the word leave?!"
"I just want to know what happened—"
"You should know what happened!" Jay screamed, filling his lungs with as much air as he needed before exclaiming, "You just had to go tell them what happened—!"
"Tell them about what?" Kane shouted back. He could only be yelled at some many times, but that was the last straw. "What the fuck did I tell them about?!"
"How I kissed you!"
"You really think I'd do that to you Jay?"
"Why else would they beat me up?" he exclaimed, stepping towards him. "They literally said to stay away from you! What? You couldn't fight your own battles so you had to get people that have been torturing me for years?!"
"That wasn't fucking me Jay!"
"Then who told them—"
"It must of been Jamie because she was there—"
"Right I forgot, you were making out with her at the bar and I interrupted your night out with her."
"Look," Kane had enough of being ripped into pieces for having done nothing. Yes, he had messed up once with Jay but it was only one time and he promised it would never happen again, "I should have sat down with you in the cafeteria and I'm sorry I didn't that one time. I'm sorry that this happened today, and best believe I will knock Jasper's teeth out for doing that, and beat up any football players that touched you. I'll give Jamie a taste of her own medicine for breaking your glasses, but none of that was me Jay—"
"How can I even believe that?!"
"Because we're fucking friends, Jay, that's why. And if that's not enough for you—"
Kane noticed that Jay's eyes had grown teary, and one of them began leaking onto his cheek, "You said that last time and just betrayed me when the others are around—"
"And I'm sorry, okay?" Kane stepped towards him, gripping his jaw and swiftly brushing his thumbs across Jay's cheeks, wiping them away. "I'm sorry, that will never happen again."
Shortly after, Jay burst into sobs, and Kane reached behind his head and squeezed him against his chest. It had been months since Jay had somebody comfort him while he was crying, and as he felt the warmth from Kane, the shifting of his muscles as he continued to massage his quivering back, he realized that maybe having friends isn't so bad.
"Don't worry," Kane cooed, squeezing him comfortingly, "I'll get them back."
