•his kingdom, called khirene, is one of the smaller few, its claim to fame being maintains excellent for mining, of coal, diamonds, and many other things that provide riches. there are four provinces-he's from the western province, called nuido, their mountains full of rubies- all corresponding to the area they lie. the northern province is called hisea, their bit of a colder climate making them great for coal mining. the eastern province, eagasta, produces sparkling diamonds, and happens to be the sight of a lot of murders for this resource. lastly, the southern province, gretha, produces gold, the most valuable of all the provinces. due to the sheer value of the kingdom, how much it produces, other, larger, more powerful kingdoms started to grow interest. many years ago, when edwin was a teen, one of those kingdoms, athreen, formed an alliance with them, one they proceeded to break. because of this, they have taken almost complete control of khirene, much to the dismay of citizens, who are powerless to stop it, having been crushed in their attempt to fight. now, this fate is accepted.

the kingdom was a classic monarchy, the monarchs having the final word, making all the decisions, though due to the small size of the kingdom, they were great listeners to what the people needed. the kingdom flourished under their rule, the citizens were happy. now, the kingdom is "ruled" by their former royal family, but athreen's royal family is telling them what to do. now, the citizens are miserable, their kingdom simply being used as a mine for resources. they are underpaid and overworked, but the outside world assumes all is normal.

•ever since he was a teen and the kingdom merge happened, edwin has longed to feel that power, the way they just swooped in and took over with ease, felt envy of the way they crushed them like bugs. he never wanted to feel weak again, so he trained himself in the dark arts- forbidden magic in his kingdom- so nobody could ever treat him that way, so he could have the power his kingdom never got, the strength to fight.
•yet one man can not be completely good nor completely evil. no, edwin has quite the soft spot for kids, hence his position as headmaster, wouldn't want to hurt them, not intentionally, not unless he feels he has to. he prefers they stay in the dark, he doesn't want push to come to shove- imagine the scandal, the lawsuits, how it would ruin his life, his reputation! he has worked so hard to be where he is now, almost forty years, and he can't have all his advancements be ruined, not when he's this close to practically unlimited power, not when he could have everything.
•manipulation isn't a lost tactic to him by any means, no, in the teaching circle he's been known to hire people with less willpower, those less likely to oppose him or those that share his ideals. after all, it's easier to have a staff that either won't fight or agrees with you, people to put the students to take in the event there is a problem, than to try and tame those against him. of course, none of them know his real motivations, few know about his plan, only those he's deemed extremely trustworthy. they believe what they're told, no questions to be asked. he made his way to the top by getting no one to ask questions, and he intends to keep things that way, no matter the cost.
•he's gone quite dark, as if manipulation and extorting school resources aren't clue to that fact. his use of dark magic has blackened his soul, made it near impossible for him to stop, the withdrawal practically torture. that is the price of what he's done, and it's corrupted everything about him, the rot down to the core. his actions are guided by darkness, the wrong decision always seeming to be the right one to choose, almost as if the angel on his shoulder has disappeared. his morality is drastically skewed too the point where he thinks that justice and revenge are the same, that he only wants to destroy the people that hurt him rather than come to agreement. there is no going back for him, no being saved from this.

•raina pendleton- mother, deceased. she died due to old age, after living a long and fulfilled life. she was very close with edwin, she raised him practically a single mother after all. he was shocked and saddened by her death, but she's in a better place now.
•franklin pendleton- stepfather, deceased. he practiced dark magic, but only defensively, as he was a retired soldier. he was the one that taught edwin the basics of dark magic, what set him down his path, and blamed himself for that until his death. he died of old age, not long after raina, possibly due to a broken heart. he was very close with the whole family, a well-loved, good man.
•arthur desmeer- father, deceased. arthur walked out in edwin when he was a child, too cowardly to face being a parent. edwin grew up with nothing but resentment at him, and as dark magic corrupted his soul, it corrupted his mind as well, until one day he found his father and kílled him. he staged it as an accident, covered it all up, and acted like he found him. no one has found this out since.
•evelyn jameson- estranged half-sister on his mother's side, alive. evelyn is 20 years his junior, and while edwin absolutely adores her and her children, he keeps his distance due to fear of harming them, that and the fact that she lives very far away in another kingdom. they were close when she was a kid, but due to the large age difference between them, they never got much time together, though he does write her occasionally. she has no idea about his powers, simply thinks he's the headmaster.
•guinevere aila-pendleton- ex-wife, alive. she and edwin had fallen in love in college, back when he still had enough good in him to change. they got married a couple years later, and guinevere tried desperately to change his path, to get him to give up magic, yet no attempt worked. it came to a head when edwin brutally injured a man unable to hold up his end of a deal. guinevere packed up that night and left a note saying that if he ever changed, she would be willing to come back home. edwin still keeps that in his desk and is extremely hurt when someone brings her up, the conversation topic banned.

backstory
•his childhood was surprisingly normal for someone that ends up the way he did. his family was normal until his father walked out, but his mother remarried eventually. edwin was a perfectly normal kid until the year of his fifteenth birthday, when a neighboring kingdom invading. a previous alliance had been made to avoid this, but they were too weak. edwin's dear friend, morgan, who was barely eighteen, was kílled in fighting. he came home that night hysterical, when his stepfather asked if he wanted to learn how to protect himself. in a few months, edwin had mastered the basics of dark defensive magic, but the war was already over. he swore that he'd never let himself be overpowered like that, would make people fear him, never to be crushed like their kingdom. he never did come back, though.
•this began his intense study of dark magic. he found someone willing to teach, and became a great student. but all magic comes with a price, even learning it, and edwin's price was that the more he used it, the more goodness inside him died out. when his soul became completely black, he would die too. this didn't deter him, and he continued studying, becoming more and more powerful through the years.
•he went to higher education to become a teacher after learning of a school for royalty with a carta in magical reserve underneath it. it was in that time he met guinevere and fell madly in love with her, yet not in love enough to stop. as mentioned before, she left him due to the effects of his magic, unable to handle what he was doing to himself, to her, their life. he never fully recovered, closed himself off to everyone.
•he graduated top of his class, and thankfully found a job at the school he'd heard of. he started off as an english teacher, and quickly moved up the ranks until appointed headmaster ten years ago, the perfect position to get exactly what he wanted. he started carrying through with his plot to get the magic lurking under the school, a way to make it foolproof. he started appointing teachers that wouldn't be a problem, subtly firing ones that got in his way, keeping everything as under control as possible. the goal was to not arouse suspicion, and he's been careful. now, after nearly twenty years of planning, of careful consideration and work to get to where he is, he's ready. he's finally going to win.
