Chapter 52
We charge at the orcs, and Thorin yells in Dwarvish. The dwarves from the Iron Hills follow us, and our weapons clash with those of the orc army.
I stab and spin and kill orcs left and right. It's exhilarating.
As I finish off an Orc, Fili rides up to me on a huge goat.
"Nossa, you coming? Kili, Thorin, Dwalin, and I are going to take out Azog," he calls over the raging battle.
"Of course I'm coming! I'm staying with you," I reply. He takes my hand and pulls me onto the back of the beast before we start sprinting.
We catch up with Dwalin, Kili, and Thorin and ride through a mass of orcs, killing every single one in our path.
We ride up the side of a mountain and I hold onto Fili's torso. We reach the ruins of an old town, known as Ravenhill, and wipe out the orcs as we come onto the main ground.
Fili and I jump off the goat and stab the same Orc at the same time. We grin at each other and continue to fight, Kili joining us.
Soon, all the orcs are dead. As we catch our breaths, we stare at the cliff where Azog once stood.
"Where is he?" Kili asks.
A sick feeling settles into my stomach. Him disappearing is the worst thing that could happen.
"It looks empty. I think Azog has fled!" Kili continues, his voice filled with hope.
"Kili..." I begin.
"I don't think so," Thorin mutters. He turns to the three of us. "Fili, take your brother and your wife. Scout out the towers. Keep low and out of sight. If you see something, report back. Do not engage. Do you understand?"
"We have company," Dwalin says, walking from where he was fighting to us. The screeching and snorting of goblins echoes through the ruins. "Goblin mercenaries. No more than a hundred."
"We'll take care of them," Thorin says. "Go! Go!"
Fili, Kili, and I take off running, our weapons in hand.
We duck under a stone ledge and start creeping across a frozen lake, not saying a word. Eventually, we reach a stone hallway.
Designs are etched into the damp walls and cold air surrounds us. The three of us look back and forth, trying to find anything.
Suddenly, a creature's roar echoes out through the hall. Our eyes all dart in its direction.
Kili starts to run for it, but Fili stops him.
"Hey. Stay here with Nossa. Search the lower levels. I've got this," he says confidently.
"There is no way I'm letting you go after some monster by yourself," I reply. Fili looks at me, his blue eyes burning into mine.
"Nossa, take care of my little brother. Kili, take care of my wife. I need you guys to get to safety. Please, I don't want to lose you."
"I don't want to lose you!" I retort, beginning to grow more panicked.
"Nossa, let's go! Fili is a great warrior, he'll be fine," Kili whispers. I look at the dark haired archer before looking to my husband.
"I love you," I whisper, kissing him. He smiles and kisses back.
"See you soon."
Kili takes my hand and leads me down the tunnel. We twist and turn down different ruined hallways, and my stomach does flips.
I hate Fili being alone. I don't want us to separate, especially not when Azog is missing.
"Kili, I'm scared," I whisper.
"Shh, it'll be alright. Fili will be okay," he replies, but even he sounds unsure.
Eventually, we reach the end of the long stretch and find ourselves looking out at a looming tower surrounded by fog. Thorin, Dwalin, and Bilbo stand in the clearing, looking up in horror.
Drums beat loudly and firelight appears. Azog, the white orc filth, appears, dragging Fili behind him.
"NO!" I scream, trying to run to him. Kili grabs me and holds me close.
Azog begins speaking in Black Speech, and my heart begins to beat faster and faster until I feel like I'm going to throw it up.
I see Tauriel and Legolas appear at the entrance to the ruins, but I only look at them for a split second before looking back to my husband.
"GO!" Fili screams as he dangles from Azog's fist. I start sobbing uncontrollably, and Kili holds me tighter while his brown orbs remain on his brother. "RUN!"
Azog's blade runs through Fili's back and he drops him, and I finally break free from Kili to go and catch him. The force of his weight knocks me over, but I recover quickly and pull him into my lap. Kili runs over, standing over his brother.
"Fili," I sob, hugging him and stroking his hair. He's breathing hard, fighting for every breath.
"Kili... I love you, my brother. Nossa, amrâlimê," he whispers.
"Amrâlimê," I whisper back, kissing him. Fili kisses back as best he can and grabs hold of my hand, as well as Kili's. With that, he takes his last breath and I close his empty blue eyes. I cradle him in my arms, tears flowing down my cheeks.
"Fili? FILI!" Kili screams in agony. Pain switches to hatred on his face, and he starts running, killing every Orc in sight.
"Kili, no! I can't lose you too!" I scream.
He doesn't listen and runs out of my line of vision.
"Kili!" Thorin yells, racing after his nephew. Bilbo wanders a bit, dazed.
"Thorin!" Dwalin calls, following a little ways.
I continue to hold Fili, too overrun by grief to move. I silently run my fingers through his hair as tears run down my cheeks and blur my vision.
"Nossa..." a female says from behind me. I turn and see Tauriel standing there, pain evident in her face. Legolas is no longer with her, and I suspect that he went to fight.
"Tauriel, go after Kili. Please," I beg through my sobs.
She nods, gives me a weak smile, and runs in the same direction that Kili went. I can hear Dwalin fighting orcs, and I guess that Bilbo is with him.
I look back to my fallen husband and begin to weep again.
"Amrâlimê," I sob, saying it over and over again. I kiss him, and I know he'll never kiss back again.
I stay there for a long time, my heart like lead. After what feels like forever, I hear footsteps approaching. They're too light to be a Dwarf, yet to heavy to be an elf.
"Nossa," Tauriel says, appearing from behind a rock. I spin to look, and I see her holding the lifeless body of Kili in her arms.
"No... No!" I scream, holding my face in my hands. Tauriel lays Kili down beside his brother, and I sob harder. "I've lost them both. They're gone. My husband. My brothers. My best friends. Gone," I sob.
"They will pass into Valinor. They were noble and brave," Tauriel says. I nod and sob harder.
"But I don't want them to be in Valinor. I want them here."
Tauriel sighs and leans down next to me. Tears are visible in her eyes, and she reaches out her hand to me. On it lays Kili's token.
"He gave me this as he was dying. He told me to give it to you, as a promise that him and his brother will be waiting for you."
I take it and hold it to my chest, not saying a word.
Tauriel stands and bows her head to me and the fallen dwarves beside me.
"I must find my Lord Legolas. Peace be with you, Nossa Stonehelm."
I look to my friends before pressing a kiss to Kili's forehead. I then look at the Elf.
"Peace be with you as well, my friend."
She nods and stands, wiping her eyes before striding away to find Legolas.
I sob harder than ever, clutching Fili and Kili's hand and wishing that both of them weren't gone. I can feel Kili's cold stone token in between our hands, reminding me of the promise he couldn't keep.
Commotion and chaos from the battle can be heard from our secluded spot on Ravenhill, but I don't listen. I could care less for war. War has taken everything from me.
A shriek pierces the air and I look up. Eagles, giant eagles with massive wings and brown feathers, fly through the air.
I watch them fly and choke back more tears. I flew on the eagles with Fili and Kili...
"Nossa, we've won," Dwalin says from behind me. "The battle is finished."
I jump at the sudden voice and turn to look at him.
"Where is Thorin?" I choke out.
"We found him and Bilbo on the frozen waterfall. He is with his nephews," Dwalin replies. I choke another sob.
Now war has taken everything from me. My father, my adoptive uncle, my husband, my best friends.
"How will we carry both of them?" Dwalin asks weakly. I shake my head, and at that moment, Tauriel appears again.
"I found Legolas," she says quietly.
"Can you help us take Kili back to the mountain?" I ask. She nods, picks him up, and strides off much faster than Dwalin or I would be able to do.
Dwalin sighs heavily and puts his hand on my back.
"Let's bring him back to the mountain," he says. He picks up Fili and we start walking back to Erebor.
I clutch on to Dwalin's arm, barely able to walk. He puts his arm around me and I sob freely, holding onto the large dwarf like a lifeline. Tears fill Dwalin's eyes, but he doesn't cry out loud.
We reach the mountain and join up with all the other sorrowful dwarves and hobbit. Balin and I clean the blood off their bodies and place their swords over their chests for a proper warrior's funeral. We lay them down in their graves and surround them with candles. Balin hands me their crowns, which I gently place on each of their heads.
The crowns that Fili and Kili never got to wear. The crown that Thorin didn't wear long enough.
"Rest now, sons of Durin. May you be at eternal peace, and may your names never be forgotten. May you join you ancestors in the afterlife, and may your stories be carved into these halls forever more," Balin says.
I stand next to Bilbo and we both cry softly.
We finish the ceremony and bury the Durin's side by side, Thorin in the middle and a nephew on each side.
We sing a Dwarvish song of passing, but my voice is far to scratchy and hoarse from crying to join in. The others don't sound to good either, but we sing anyway.
I close my eyes and try to wake myself up from this terrible nightmare.
But of course, I don't wake up.
