Chapter 32

I sit down on the floor and stare out at the elven kingdom.

"I'll wager the sun is on the rise," Bofur says. "Must be nearly dawn."

"We're never gonna reach the mountain, are we?" Ori asks.

Fili sighs and leans against the wall of our cell. I sit next to him with my head on his shoulder.

"Not stuck in here, you're not," the voice of Bilbo rings out. He shakes the keys, and we all stare at him, wide eyed.

Fili and I are to our feet in seconds, watching the hobbit.

"Bilbo!" Oin calls out.

All the dwarves start chattering, and Bilbo hushes us.

"Shh! There are guards nearby!"

Bilbo runs around, unlocking the doors to all the cells.

"Close the doors. It'll buy us more time," Thorin says.

Bilbo unlocks our cell and we go to the exit as quietly as possible.

"Up the stairs," Thorin says.

"You first," Dwalin says.

"Not that way," Bilbo says. "Down here. Follow me."

Bilbo leads us down ramps and stairways until we reach the wine cellar.

The guards are asleep, and Bilbo leads on.

"This way. Come on."

"I don't believe it. We're in the cellars!" Kili whispers.

"You were supposed to be leading us out, not further in!" Bofur grumbles.

"I know what I'm doing!" Bilbo replies. "This way, this way!"

"Everyone climb into the barrels quickly!" Bilbo orders.

"Are you mad?" Dwalin asks. "They'll find us."

"No, no," Bilbo replies. "They won't, I promise you. Please, please. You must trust me."

"Just do it," I whisper.

"Do as he says," Thorin confirms.

Everyone grumbles and gets into barrels. I hop into mine, and it's fairly easy considering how small I am.

"What do we do now?" Bofur asks as Bilbo is counting us.

"Hold your breath," the hobbit replies.

"Hold our breath?" I ask.

"What do you mean?" Bofur asks. Bilbo pulls a lever, and the barrels roll out of the floor and drop into the river below.

We wait anxiously for Bilbo, and eventually he drops through the roof.

"Well done, Master Baggins," Thorin says, grinning. "Go! Come on, let's go!"

We start paddling through the river with the current to help us. No doubt by this point, the elven guards have figured out that we're gone.

The river sends us into the open air and down a waterfall.

"Hold on!" Thorin yells. The waterfall turns into white-water rapids, and I clutch desperately to my barrel.

Bilbo is tossed around easily, considering he doesn't have a barrel. He clings onto Nori's barrel, who holds onto his wrists.

A horn is blown, signifying that the elves have definitely noticed our disappearance. We see the exit, and an elf pulls a lever. The metal gate closes, and Thorin's barrel hits the closed doors.

The elves unsheathe their swords, and I watch in horror as one of them is impaled by an arrow. An orc leaps over the wall, and my eyes widen.

"Our situation just got worse!" I yell.
