Chapter 1

I've never known a life other than the one spent on the road. My mother and father lived in Erebor before the great dragon Smaug attacked.  My father died in the battle against the orcs afterwards.  My mother often tells me about the dragon fire and how her and my father needed to flee and it makes me cringe.

I fear that dragon.

My name is Nossa Stonehelm. I am a dwarf from Erebor, one of the greatest and mightiest kingdoms in Middle Earth. I am mostly shunned by the other dwarf girls my age because of my lack of facial hair and the fact that I'm thinner than most, however my differences are the reason I met my two best friends.

Their names are Fili and Kili. Their uncle is Thorin Oakenshield, the future king under the mountain.

Fili, Kili and I all became best friends because we were all shunned, them not as much as me. Kili was shunned because of his lack of facial hair as well. Fili stuck by his brother at all times.

Since we met, we haven't left each other's sides.

*flashback*

I was walking around our little camp area when I heard Thorin talking to someone. I looked at where he was standing and saw that he was talking to a small group of twelve dwarves, including Fili and Kili.

I was a curious dwarf, so I eavesdropped.

"We are going on a quest to reclaim our homeland!" Thorin announced. The dwarves cheered and I frowned.

I didn't want to be alone.

I waited around for the meeting to be released and when it was, Fili and Kili approached me excitedly.

"Nossa, we have to talk to you!" Fili said.

"About the adventure? Yeah, I heard," I said.

"We asked Thorin if you could come and he said you could," Kili said. I grinned and hugged them.

"This is awesome!" I squealed.

And that is how I became a part of Thorin and Company. We were going to reclaim our homeland.

*present day*

Fili, Kili and I approach a small house dug out of the ground.

"We'll go first, you follow after," Kili says. They walk to the front door and knocked.

A small man with brown, curly hair and large, furry feet opened the door.

"Fili," the blonde dwarf says.

"And Kili," the other replies.

"At your service," they say in perfect synchronization as they bow.

"You must be Mr. Boggins," Kili says, grinning.

"Nope, you can't come in, you've come to the wrong house," the hobbit says, beginning to close the door. Fili looks back at me, and I shrug, confused.

"Wait, has it been cancelled?" Kili asks, his voice riddled with concern.

"Nobody told us," Fili says. I walk up behind them, and Kili's eyes flicker over to me before looking back to the hobbit.

"Cancelled? No, nothings been cancelled." The hobbit looks confused, and I can't help but feel a bit bad for him. I mean, there are going to be a lot of dwarves in his house.

"Well that's a relief!" Kili grins, and they walk into the house, pushing past the small man.

"Careful with these, just had 'em sharpened," Fili says, handing the hobbit his stash of weapons. The hobbit looks back at the door, and I smile at bow.

"Nossa Stonehelm, at your service."

The man nods and sighs. I nod my head slightly and follow Fili and Kili.

"Nice place you've got here. Did you do it yourself?" Kili asks, looking around the house. It's a small house, quite quaint and tidy.

"No, it's been in my family for years," the hobbit says. Kili begins to scrape mud off the bottom of his boots, and the man looks over at him.

"That's my mother's glory box, could you please not do that?!" he scolds.

"Kili, have some respect," I say. He looks at me and sighs, putting his feet back on the floor.

"Thank you, Nossa," the hobbit says.

"You're welcome, uh," I reply, trying to think of his name.

"Bilbo Baggins," the hobbit says.

"You're welcome, Bilbo."

As I say this, Dwalin, of all dwarves, comes down the hall.

"Kili, come with us," he says, putting his arm around Kili's shoulders.

"Mr. Dwalin," he says, grinning widely. Fili and I follow them down the hall, and Balin appears around the corner. He orders us into the dining room, which is quite small. Fili has to duck his head to get under the doorway, but I don't. I'm a really short dwarf.

"Alright, make room for everyone else," Balin says.

"Everyone else? There are more coming?" Bilbo asks in surprise. At that moment, the doorbell rings, and Bilbo goes walking down the hall, calling about how he doesn't want any more dwarves in his house. The crash of Fili's weapons is heard on the floor, and he winces.

"Don't worry about it, I think they're fine," I whisper. He looks down at me and chuckles slightly.

"Do you still have your knives on you?" he asks.

I smirk and reveal the knife that remains underneath my belt. He laughs, and Kili looks over and grins.

The dwarves that just arrived walk into the pantry after we greet them, and they grab food and place it on the table. We begin bustling around, preparing for a feast. I can hear Bilbo yelling, "Put it back," and "Don't touch that."

Fili, Kili, and I find it quite hilarious.

Bombur walks into the dining room with three cheese blocks, and Fili, Kili, and I grab ale from a barrel.

"Do you need a knife for that?!" Bilbo yells after Bombur.

"He eats it by the block," Bofur replies.

I look at the hobbit and smirk, sipping my ale.

This is going to be a long night.
