~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long ago, two happily married people had a son. He had pure black eyes and looked serious even though he was only a day old. They called him Notch.
A few years later, the same couple had twins. One of them had beautiful purple eyes and a smile that seemed to always be on his face. They called him Steve. His older twin brother had white eyes that glowed in the dark. He had a cheeky smile on his face and his father laughed as he knew that his second son was going to be adventurous. His parents were worried about his glowing eyes, but the doctor assured them that is was fine. They called him Herobrine.
When the two twins were only 4 years old, both of their parents fell sick to a deadly virus. Their father died first, with their mother dying a few days later. The three young brothers had become orphans overnight. Because their house was in the middle of the village, the head villagers had decided that they would be allowed to remain in their house, with the neighbours checking on them regularly. Two years later, when they were 6 years old, Steve and Herobrine started going to school.
Herobrine was bullied for his glowing white eyes. The bullies were careful to carry out their business when Herobrine's brothers and adults were not nearby. It got particularly bad on one day. Herobrine was walking home from school, taking one of the quiet back roads. Steve had already gone home since Herobrine had had to stay at school later. The bullies had finally caught up with Herobrine and they were teasing him.
"Watch out for the tree root Herobrine," one of the boys teased, throwing out his leg to trip over Herobrine. Herobrine stumbled but managed to stop falling. Another boy pushed him from behind, sending him sprawling on the dirt.
"Wow Herobrine, why did you fall?" he teased.
"How can you even see out of those stupid eyes?"
"It looks like someone pulled out your eyes and replaced them with flashlights."
Herobrine felt his rage growing but he held it down. He tried to get up but the boys just pushed him back down.
"Did we say you could get up Flashlight eyes?" the first boy asked.
Herobrine tried to ignore them and stood up, moving rapidly out of their reach. He kept walking but the boys followed him, continuing to throw insults at him.
"Leave me alone," Herobrine mumbled, trying to get control of his growing anger.
"If you beg us like a baby, we'll think about it," one of the boys said smirking.
The boys started pushing him around and Herobrine snapped. His vision clouded as he felt himself losing control of his body. He heard screams coming from far away, all abruptly silenced. All of a sudden, his vision cleared and he had control over his body. On the ground lay all of the bullies, dead. In his hand he was holding a bloody diamond sword. Herobrine gasped in horror as his young mind somehow realised that he had killed them. He dropped the sword and ran, sprinting away from the violent death scene. He didn't tell anyone about what had happened, and cause of the death of the boys remained a mystery.
That was the first time that Herobrine came out.
Fast forward 9 years and Herobrine and Steve were 15 years old. Notch had turned 18 years old and was officially an adult. On a clear summer's day, Herobrine was walking around the forest when the sounds of metal striking against metal came to him. He ran in the direction of the sounds and saw a group of bandits attacking Steve. Steve, armed only with an axe was struggling to hold them off. Once again, Herobrine felt himself losing control over his body and his vision tunnelled until he was watching from far away. He saw himself run out of the trees, a diamond sword appearing in his hand. He cut through the bandits like they were butter. Steve backed off. He knew that something was wrong with his brother. The expression on his face was one of hate and unreasonable anger. With the bandits gone, Herobrine turned his eyes to Steve. In on swift movement, Herobrine had disarmed Steve and pinned him to the ground. He raised his sword high, ready to kill Steve.
"HERO DON'T!" Steve yelled in terror.
Herobrine heard the yell and without knowing exactly how, he took back control, stopping the sword from moving down on the unprotected Steve. Herobrine scrambled away from Steve, dropping his sword and running away into the forest. Steve, realising that something important had happened (but now knowing exactly what it was) ran after him. He found his brother several minutes later crying at the base of a tree. Steve slowly went up to him.
"Hero?" he asked carefully.
Herobrine started and scrambled up, backing away from Steve. His hands shook and his eyes were full of terror. "Don't..." he said shakily.
Before he could react, Steve had run up to him and hugged him. Herobrine put his arms around his brother and put his head on Steve's shoulder, crying. Steve held him, letting his brother cry even though it was making his shirt very wet. A few minutes later, Herobrine was able to form words though his tears.
"I'm so so sorry," he mumbled. "I'm so sorry."
Steve gently patted his back. "It's okay Hero."
"No it's not."
"You didn't hurt me in the end."
"But I almost did," Herobrine said, gently pushing his brother away.
Steve tilted his head, his normally cheerful face very serious. "But that wasn't you, was it?" he asked very slowly.
Herobrine sat on the ground and pulled his knees up to his chin. "I don't know what it is. I just... I lost control of myself. I saw what I was doing but I... wasn't doing it."
"What do you mean?" Steve asked, sitting down next to his brother.
Herobrine took a deep breath. "I... Something took over my body. I saw what I was doing and I could hear it, but it was as if it was coming from far away. Something else was doing the actions; I was just watching."
Steve didn't have anything to say to that. He sensed that there was something else on Herobrine's mind and he waited for him to share it. He didn't have to wait long.
"Steve... I'm worried that I might... be turning... into a monster."
Steve put a comforting arm around his brother. "You could never be a monster Hero. You're kind, caring and helpful. You would never kill someone else, even if it was out of self-defence."
That night, Herobrine talked for the first time.
'What do you think you'll accomplish by telling someone about your problems?'
Herobrine lay there, hearing the words but also not hearing them. There was no one in his room.
"Hello?" he said softly.
'I'm not out there. I'm in here.'
With a sudden sinking feeling, Herobrine realised.
'You're in my head.'
'Well done, you finally figured it out.'
'What do you want?'
'Want? I want to have a little chat with you.'
Herobrine got out of his bed. This was going too far. He had to tell Steve.
'Tell Steve what?'
He froze.
'Steve will think you're going crazy. And if he doesn't, Notch certainly will. They'll chain you up in a jail cell, where you'll stay forever.'
'They won't do that.'
'Are you sure?'
Herobrine wasn't sure. So he didn't tell anyone about the voice that had suddenly appeared in his head. He somehow knew that it was the voice that took control of him and killed people. Over the next several years, Herobrine kept on trying to take control but Herobrine managed to hold him back. He found that it helped if he repeated Steve's words over and over in his head.
He wasn't a monster.
He wasn't going to let this monster out.
But one day, Herobrine finally got out. It happened so suddenly that Herobrine had no time to retaliate. He was shunted to the back of his mind, unable to stop Herobrine.
'Now it's time for me to have my fun.'
By chance, Herobrine and Steve had been visiting a nearby village. Herobrine picked up a nearby diamond sword and spun it.
'What are you going to do?' Herobrine asked. Well, thought actually.
'It's probably better if you don't know.'
At that exact moment, a young girl walked into the house, carrying a basket of fresh apples. In one swift movement, Herobrine had plunged his sword into the girls chest.
'NO!'
But it was too late. The girl was dead before she hit the ground. Herobrine spun his sword.
'One down, 189 to go.'
What happened next could only be described as a massacre. Herobrine killed everyone in sight, using strange white magic to set houses on fire. Herobrine tried to gain back control, but Herobrine didn't give in. In the distance, Herobrine saw a small group of people running away. He tried to see if Steve was in that group but they were too far away. After what seemed like an age, everyone lay dead and houses were burning husks. Herobrine gave control back to Herobrine.
Herobrine fell to the ground, too shocked to move. His stomach heaved and he was sick. His arms and legs shook and he tried to block his eyes, nose and ears to the scene around him. He struggled to stand up and he slowly stumbled away from the destroyed village, moving faster and fasted until he was running away. It took him a few hours to reach his home. In the darkness of night, he snuck into his room and got into his bed. His shock denied him the small comfort of tears.
Meanwhile, the escaped villagers had reached the village and told the elders what had happened. They called Notch and told him of what had happened. At first, Notch refused to believe it but the testimony of the escaped villagers was hard to deny. Notch said that Steve would back him up in the fact that it wasn't Herobrine, but when the villagers told Notch of Steve's fate, he finally gave in. He let two of the village warriors inside his house. They saw that Herobrine was there and they drew their swords to kill him.
'Wake up.'
In a flash, Herobrine had opened his eyes. He rolled to avoid the sword of the first man and quickly grabbed his sword to block the second stroke. He stepped inside the range of the first man's sword and smashed his sword hilt into his head, just hard enough to knock him out. He disarmed the second man and sent him sprawling. He levelled his sword at the man's neck, ready for the killing stroke.
'Go on, do it!'
Herobrine's sword point waved for a second.
'I'm not a monster.'
He ran, leaving the man alive. He ran outside the house and stopped dead. Notch was standing there, a dozen villagers in diamond armour with diamond swords standing next to him. They locked eyes.
"Notch, I can explain," Herobrine pleaded. "It's not what you think it is."
Notch didn't answer. He only raised his hand and pointed at his brother. The diamond villagers ran at Herobrine, drawing their swords to fight. Herobrine ran, sprinting away from the villagers, his home and his brother. Tears ran down his face and he sobbed as he ran. Notch's blank face filled his mind. Herobrine ran until long after the sound of the villagers had faded away. He ran until the sun had come up and he was lost. He finally stopped, falling onto the ground and gasping for air.
Why? Why did Notch do that? Why didn't Steve stop him?
'Steve's dead.'
The voice was careless as he stated the fact.
'Wh.... what?'
'Steve's dead. You killed him.'
'No I... I didn't.'
'You did. You set a building on fire. He was in the building. He was getting everyone out but didn't make it out himself. It collapsed on him, crushing him and burning him to death.'
'I didn't do that. That was you.'
'Does it make a difference?'
'Yes. You are not me.'
'It doesn't matter. No one is safe from you. I will kill anyone I want to, whenever I want to. You can't stop me from killing your village.'
'I'm not going back.'
'You're not- Wait, what?'
'I'm not going back.' Herobrine stood up.
'Why?'
'You said it yourself. No one is safe from me, so the best say to protect everyone is to stay away from them. I'll live out here, away from everyone else.'
'Alone?'
'If I need to. I know how to control you Herobrine. You'll never hurt anyone else ever again.'
Herobrine heard his double growl.
'Fine then. But you can't stop me forever.'
'We'll see.'
