Chapter 21 - A Fresh Start

"Resistance? So this is the famous resistance?" Kano asks.

Razor nods, starting to walk off again. He leads us to the smaller cabins, and walks into one on the middle row. There are three rows total.

The cabin's empty except for four sets of bunk beds, each with a small trunk in front of it. A door leads to outside, where I assume is the bathroom. I would think since this is a camp, the bathrooms are communal.

"This is where you all will be staying. We don't have other people as roommates for you, so consider yourselves lucky. The bathrooms are right behind the cabin next you, so it's a quick trip," Razor says.

He walks over to the door, before turning around. "Dinner and your introduction are in an hour, and after that we'll have a meeting with you three. For now, get used to your new living space. Oh and also," he says, motioning over to the side of the door, where a bag lay. "That's your stuff, all in new, non-bugged bags. See you later."

He exits, closing the door before leaving.

I go over to the bags, opening them up. Everything we had with us is in there, even the snacks Kano bought us.

"Wow, I can't believe it," Rosaline mutters.

She goes over to a bunk, opening the trunk in front of it. "I call this one," she calls over her shoulder.

Kano claims his next to Rosaline's, and I take mine across from them. I grab my stuff, placing it all in my trunk. Once I'm done, I get onto the top part of the bunk using the ladder, curling up into a ball there.

This is real. A resistance. A place for Specials to live freely. Maybe this is my chance to be useful. I want to be. I want to be a part of something bigger, something that will be for the greater good. I don't want to stay a naive little boy or a pawn. I want to be important. Maybe here I can do that.

A small smile makes it's way to my face. I know I can do it. This is the place where we're free. I can leave my past behind, and stride forward into a better future.

"Ryan? You okay?" Rosaline asks from her bed.

I nod, sitting up. "Yes. I'm fine."

A small smile makes it's way onto my face. A fresh start. That's what we need. A new beginning.

"So, we're here now. What are we supposed to do? Fight the government with a bunch of kids and peers?" Kano asks, sarcasm dripping of his words.

Rosaline rolls her eyes. "Of course. We'll train and we'll fight. It's the only way we can be free."

"That's not true. I've been doing fine for this long. We don't need to be here to live freely," he argues.

"Well, maybe not you, but Ryan and I need safety. We're wanted by the government. We need to keep low and learn how to defend ourselves properly. Ryan has never received training before. Besides, if this works, all Specials could be free!" Rosaline counters.

Kano scoffs, and then they both start to argue. I stay silent the whole time. Why intervene? I would only make things worse, and we don't need that. Kano and Rosaline are always arguing. From the moment we first got into the car to drive, they've been arguing about everything. From the smallest issues like whether someone got more food than the other, to the bigger issues like where we'll rest or what we'll do.

I let them slowly fizzle out, until they're both silent, facing away from each other. They're almost like kids, but aren't we all? We're all just teenagers. We shouldn't have to worry this much. And yet, here we are, worrying about anything and everything.

Before - when I was stuck by myself - I didn't have to worry. I was well taken care of, just isolated. No worries. Only fear, doubt, and pain.

Apparently an hour had passed, because Jade suddenly barges into our cabin, grinning. "Dinner!" She screams, before running right back out.

I hop off the bed, quickly following her. I hear footsteps behind me, and I know that Kano and Rosaline are following.

We walk all the way to the dining area, where loud chatter is coming from. A bunch of long tables are set out, with all of them used for small groups of people. Abt forty people, most of them young just like Razor said.

When we're near, they all fall silent, staring at us.

"There you are! Here, sit with us!" Jade calls, waving her arms frantically in the air.

We walk over to where she sits, next to a girl with blonde hair and brown eyes, and across from Razor. Jade pulls me down next to her when I come near, and Rosaline goes to sit on the other side of the blonde. Kano sits across from me, next to Razor.

"So, how do you like it so far? Pretty cool right?" Jade asks, giggling.

"It's very pretty. I've never seen so much nature before in my life," I tell her.

A memory from a few weeks ago flashes through my head: Asher taking me out to the garden. It sends a pang through my heart. I will myself to forget about it. I can't be weak. I'll be useful. I won't be a burden anymore.

"Ryan, Kano, and Rosaline," Razor starts. We turn to him. "On Jade's left and Rosaline's right is the other person there when you crashed. She's our healer. Say hi."

The girl waves to us. "I'm Lilith. Nice to meet you."

We greet her, before Razor begins to talk again. "She's around Ryan's age, but she acts much older than that. She's my second in command. We've known each other since childhood. You'll be seeing her around a lot as well."

We all nod, before a little bell rings.

"Food!" Jade chirps, grinning.

"Food?" Rosaline asks.

"The bell signaled that we can go up now and get food," Lilith explains, standing up with Jade and Razor.

"Come on, you three, let's go get some food," Razor says, waving us over as he walks over to the line forming.

The building that's the kitchen has a service line, for serving food.

Kano gets up, followed by Rosaline. I rise out of my seat as well, walking with them to the line.

We wait until we finally get thfood, coing to sit back down at the table a few moments later. Jade's already eating, and so it Lilith, but Razor's looking at some sort of report. Where'd he even get it?

When we sit down, he looks up. "Eat. We're going to be starting your training tomorrow, so we need you three to get plenty of rest, alright?" He tells us.

We nod. I pick up my fork, stabbing it into the food, before bringing it into my mouth. The flavors explode in my mouth, and I smile, eating more.

"This is good," I mumble.

Jade giggles. "Mhm!" she mumbles through a mouthful of food.

I continue to eat. I haven't tasted something so good in years. The hospital food always lacked flavor, like a colorful pile of mush. And on the road, we had lots of tasty junk food, but it just that: junk food. This is real food; meant to fill us up and keep us strong for training and missions.

I notice that after people finish, they leave the dining area, going off to cabins, lookout posts, the field, and other various place. I finish, but decide to wait for everyone else. Rosaline's the last one to finish.

"Alright. You three," Razor starts, putting down the report and leaning his elbows on the table. "We'll start your training at seven, so get some rest. Breakfast is from five-thirty to six-thirty, so get some before seven. Have a good night."

We get up, saying good night to Lilith and Jade as well. I walk slightly behind Kano and Rosaline, enjoying the nighttime air. It's so peaceful. Small lights dot the setting, and people leisurely talk outside their cabins and laugh. The whole camp makes me feel warm inside.

We arrive at our cabin, and Rosaline and Kano head to the bathrooms. I head out a moment later.

The bathrooms are large, one for girls and one for boys. They both have about six or seven shower stalls, then the same bathroom stuff in public bathrooms.

After I'm done, I head back with Kano, who came out a moment after me.

"Do you like it here?" He asks me.

"Yeah. It seems pretty well-established. I hope we can stay here for a while. Do something useful."

He grins, throwing an arm over my shoulder. "Good. Let's get some real sleep so we can be our best tomorrow," he tells me, as we arrive to our cabin again.

Rosaline's already there, putting away her clothes and last few items. She greets us, before climbing onto her bunk. Kano and I do the same.

"Night," Rosaline yawns, before Kano turns off the lights. I remain awake, staring up at the ceiling above me.

So much has happened in the past two days. At least now we're safe. I start to wonder what would've happened if we got caught. If we had, I'm sure they would have sent us all to the hospital again, under more medicines and more supervision. Then, we would've been shipped off to kill other Specials.

I shake my head, dispelling those thoughts. I shouldn't be thinking like that anymore. We're safe, and we'll defeat the government. We'll tell the people what the truth behind insanity is, and help them.

A fresh new start awaits us. I'll be useful.
