Chapter Two
*Emberly's POV*
I lean my head on Andy's shoulder, sitting in the uncomfortable plastic chair. This isn't how I wanted to spend our honeymoon, but I don't really have a choice.
Andy and I got married less than a week ago, on November 26. I woke up from my coma October 24, and somehow, Andy managed to pull a wedding together in just under a month. He told me he couldn't wait any longer. I was happy to oblige, not wanting to wait myself. Now, instead of being somewhere tropical relaxing on the beach, I'm sitting in the waiting room of a hospital.
Because the clinical trial was what got rid of my cancer, I have to come for my final treatments. I tried to talk Andy into taking me on a real honeymoon instead, but he told me that my chance of permanent remission would be significantly better if I finish my treatment.
I had reached a point in the treatment where I only had to get it one week a month, with 3 treatments in the week. This will be my last treatment unless the cancer comes back.
It's 0630 in the morning. I'm still waking up, sleep taking it's time to leave my head. A tall, chipper blonde appears and calls my name.
"Emberly Vace." Even her voice is peppy. It makes me nauseated.
"It's Biersack." I grumble, forcing myself into a standing position and shuffle towards her. Andy is right behind me, mainly because I think he thinks I'm going to try to run for it. I'm too tired for that though.
Ever since I woke up from my year long coma, I've been weak and tire easily. I don't sleep well and am plagued by nightmares during the few hours I do manage to sleep.
The nurse leads me back to a private room, complete with a hospital bed and other equipment. I stop short inside the door, considering my options. I sway back slightly, bumping into Andy. He gently but firmly ushers me deeper into the room. I stand awkwardly between Andy and the nurse.
"Go ahead and take off your jacket for me." She instructs. I do as I'm told, revealing a short sleeved tee shirt. She gives me a once over and nods. "You'll be fine to keep those clothes on. Please lay down on the bed and wait for the doctor." I don't bother looking at Andy as I follow her orders. Even though she's not in the room anymore, I obey. I just want this over with. Andy takes a seat next to my bed, caressing my face. He doesn't try to talk, knowing I'm too exhausted to respond. A knock at the door brings us out of the moment.
An older doctor appears, and starts discussing things with Andy. I'm too exhausted to process what he's saying. There's movement, and the old man appears over me. He shines his pen light in my eyes, roughly prying my eyelids open. I smack his him away.
"Do not touch me." I snap. He seems disgruntled as he turns back to Andy. I allow my mind to drift again, but this time bits and pieces of the convo drift into focus.
"She seems mentally unstable and disturbed. Aggressive even." Old man is informing Andy.
"She has been cleared by multiple doctors. We are not here for your opinion. We're here for her final treatment." Andy is angry. The old man leaves in a huff, slamming the door behind him. I jump, feeling my breath hitch. Andy appears in my vision, comforting me lowly. The door reopens and the blonde nurse trots in again. Without saying a word she hooks me up to a vitals monitor and inserts an IV into my arm. She produces a syringe.
"This is a sedative. Once you're out, I'll give you the drug." I shake my head.
"No sedative." I say.
"Ms. Vace, I don't think you under-"
"Mrs. Biersack. And I don't want the sedative." I snap. She looks unsure, but caps the syringe and hangs an iv bag. As she is connect it to my line, she speaks to Andy.
"The drug can be quite painful. That's why we normally only give it to patients who are sedated. If it becomes too much for her, hit the call button and I'll bring the sedative back. The whole treatment should only take an hour." The nurse finishes and unclamps the line. She takes her leave, and I'm left alone in silence with Andy once again.
The drug begins rushing into my body, and I close my eyes.
Not long after, the agonizing burning starts, bringing me out of my stupor, eliciting an ungodly scream.
It takes Andy appearing over me, wearing a terrified expression for me to realize that the scream is mine.
