Chapter 7
By the time Tami and I collected our luggage, we went out to search for her cousin, who was going to meet us there. The airport was filled with people that I wasn't exactly sure Tami would be able to find her. Luckily for me, she sent me a picture of what her cousin looked like so that there could be another pair of eyes looking for her.
The picture she had sent from her phone was rather new. Tami told me her cousin always had red hair growing up, but must have dyed it a darkish blue color. Honestly, looking at her reminded me of my mentor, Mr. Elastic, because he always dyed his hair white. She was petite like Tami, but that was where the similarities fell short as the picture was taken in a crowded place, and the young woman was surrounded by a ton of friends. There wasn't one ounce of nervousness as the girl gave a huge smile that could give our friend, Kaito, a run for his money.
"It's going to be so weird seeing her again," Tami admitted as we looked around the sea of people. "Did I ever tell you that she was the first person I had ever used my Quirk to look like? I don't actually remember it, nor did I tell her because I-I didn't really remember it, but we were close when I lived here."
"Hey, relax," I told her.
Tami's nose scrunched up. "I am relaxed. I'm just telling you because I'm not sure what to expect. It's been years since I've really talked to her, so I don't even know what she's going to be like, and I don't remember what she was like when I was younger," she explained.
I shook my head. "Really? Well, it's going to be okay. Surely, she can't be that scary."
"Guess you're right," Tami exhaled as she looked up. "I just thought we'd be able to find her by now."
I looked back at my phone where the picture was at, then back at the crowd. There were a ton of people around, so it made it hard to find anyone in the first place. None of them had blue hair. If they did, it wasn't the dark shade that Amy had.
Why didn't she have normal hair that would make her easier to find? There were hardly any natural red-heads around. So, what made her want to dye her hair in the first place? It was a waste of time.
While the thought came to my head, I didn't say anything about it to Tami. She wouldn't have known. If anyone would have been able to answer my question, it was our friend, Sakura. Tami was never really girly to get into that sort of stuff.
"She could just be late," I told her. "C'mon, let's just—"
Before I could say another word, there was a terrifying scream echoing from behind. Tami and I stopped dead in our tracks before we turned around. Most of the people around us didn't even notice. It must have been normal for people to make random noises, but something about that scream didn't seem right.
Something in my gut told me that Tami needed out of here right away.
My hand grabbed Tami's arm as I pulled her closer to me, and as I did, this older man flew up into the hair. He had wings that helped him suspend in the air, so everyone could see him making the scene that he did. Despite flying, he continued to scream. His back arched back, almost as if he was being possessed in some way.
I looked down, realizing what Tami was wearing. She had a couple of outfits that could grow or shrink alongside her Quirk, one being an old Hero Costume she had when she was a Pro Hero student and a couple I got her for Christmas last year, despite our friends telling me I should have gotten her something cute instead. Still, I wanted to keep her protected, and her Quirk required her to wear something that would allow her to grow or shrink with it otherwise she'd be in trouble.
Despite having a few outfits, today she wasn't wearing any of them. It was just a plain pink t-shirt and jeans.
"If something happens, you run," I told her.
Tami nodded her head, and as she did, the man stopped screaming like a banshee. I looked back at him, noticing his wings were starting to flap a bit slower than they did before.
That was when his head snapped in our direction.
"Go!" I screamed, tearing the bags out of Tami's arms. "Get out of here. Everyone, move!"
While I didn't blame those around me who didn't take off running, it only made things worse. The winged guy flapped his powerful wings towards us, creating a gust that nearly sent too many people flying back. Even though I had told Tami to run, she was still standing beside me. When that gust of wind came spiraling towards us, I quickly grabbed her and held her close. If I didn't, she would've flown away like most of our luggage.
It was luck that she was the tiniest person around as everyone else just struggled to stay on the ground.
My eyes remained on the person with the winged Quirk. Somehow, I needed to find a way to get him to stop. There weren't any Pro Heroes around to stop him. Even then, it'd take a bit for them to get over here. I had my license, but I didn't officially start working for Bravura's Agency yet, meaning any legal stuff that happened would be all on me.
But there were people in trouble.
"Hold onto this, and when he stops creating this whirlwind, get out of here and find the police," I told Tami, handing her my bag that was filled with weights.
She did exactly as I was told, and kept herself as close to the ground as possible. When I was certain that she was stable, I turned back towards the winged guy, trying to figure out how I was even going to get to him.
Somehow I needed to distract this guy before help could arrive. If these Pro Heroes were anything like they were back home, then there was a good chance it'd take a while.
When I found a clear path to make it to where the guy was flying at, I started running as fast as I could. It was tough, but I had to be stronger. To help give it my all, I activated my Quirk, feeling my muscles expanding. People stepped out of the way, trying to hide the fear in their eyes, but I just ignored them. It was something I was used to whenever I used my Quirk, and seeing how this happened all of a sudden, I wouldn't be surprised if some people worried if this was an ambush.
It probably didn't help that I wore sweats and a t-shirt and not my Hero Costume.
Instead of worrying about that, I kept my eyes on the guy, noticing his head snapping towards me as he saw me running through the crowd. Deep down, I had hoped that this was all a misunderstanding, but seeing his mouth sneer in disgust, I knew this had to have been a planned attack. If he wanted to create chaos, throwing people in danger, then it was my job to stop him.
I quickly slammed my hand into the ground, using the force from the run to lift me off the ground. There was one thing that was dangerous whenever I did this, and that was the fact I had no control where I went. It was dangerous. Every time I did this, I had to make sure I was on target.
Luckily, the villain stayed where he was, allowing me to tackle him to the ground.
People gasped, but in the corner of my eyes, I noticed they were all running away. As long as they got to safety, I could care less how they responded. My only job was to make sure this villain stayed in place for a bit until some Pro Heroes or police got here.
"Get off of me," the villain groaned.
Instead of answering, I dug my arm into his shoulders, pushing him further into the ground. It was hard keeping him steady as I sat on his lower legs and forced most of my weight onto his shoulders. Normally, that was fine, but his wings made it awkward to reposition myself in any other way. They protruded out of his back and pressed to the side.
At least they stayed to the side for a moment. Seeing as I wasn't going to get off like he had asked, he resorted to drastic measures. One by one, the feathers were ripped away by some invisible force. My head snapped to look back at where they were going. The shorter end of the feathers flew towards innocent people who ran away, and struck them as hard as they could.
"If you don't get off me, I'll make sure everyone gets hurt," he threatened.
That wasn't why I paused. For a split second, I thought Tami had gotten away, but I quickly saw her fling herself in front of a small child that was about ready to get hit by a few of the villains flying feathers. Her back turned just in time, but that didn't help the fact that she was still hit.
The moment that those feathers struck her back, I could see the blood oozing out.
I don't know if I was afraid of what was going to happen to her or what, but the winged-villain took that moment of hesitation to his advantage and managed to fling me off of him. I slid across the ground. My muscles nearly shrank as I did. Somehow, I managed to keep going as I turned to look at the winged guy, who looked up at me with a malicious smile.
His brown eyes were open wide when he did. If he just added some white makeup and some circular rosey cheeks, he could have passed for a serial killer clown. That was the last thing I needed. I wasn't scared of clowns, but I didn't want that to be added to the list of things people were afraid of. Villains were enough to keep people awake at nights.
"Done playing hero, Yamamoto?" he asked, making me realize his accent for the first time. Most of the people on the plane were Japanese, and this guy was one of them. He had to have been as he sounded just like the people from home.
This planned attack was geared towards me. I just couldn't understand why. He didn't look like any villain I had taken down. The guy was plain as he had no outstanding features outside his brown eyes, hair, and wings, but the wings would have been enough for me to have remembered if I had dealt with him at an internship.
His head turned away, as his smile widened a bit more. I quickly stood up before he said anything.
I just wished I would have tackled him to the ground before he did say anything more.
"Pretty girl you got there, Yamamoto. Shame if she were to die," he taunted.
Almost every villain I had dealt with loved toying with their victims, or at least, they loved throwing taunts their way. Never had they ever bothered me. I knew I could deal with them.
But threatening Tami, of all people, was where I drew the line. I tried not to let it show as I ran towards him, readying my fists for an attack, but this villain had other plans. Before I could get to him, he flapped his wings, pushing himself off the ground. Once he was in the air, his wings swung back before they flapped forward, sending over a hundred of his feathers away. For a moment, I thought they would come right at me as they flung in my direction. I wasn't standing in front of Tami, so I ducked.
That was a mistake. I knew it as I heard the villain chuckle.
"Oh, how precious," he said between laughs.
My eyes widened as I turned to look at the feathers. The airport was so huge that they could have flown in any direction, yet they just shot straight up. While the ceiling was good thirty plus feet above me, there was glass. It didn't take a genius to realize where those feathers were heading.
"Everyone," I shouted. "Get out of here fast!"
Of all the things I could have shouted, it was a bit ridiculous I had to scream for people to get away. At this point, there weren't many people around. The only people who stayed were small groups that were too afraid to move, and Tami, who was still guarding the small child.
But my words weren't meant for just anyone. I needed to warn Tami to get out of here. Yet, she just sat there. Her back was turned towards me while her arms were wrapped around the small child.
She wasn't going to move.
At that moment, I didn't care. She needed help. That little kid she was protecting needed help. I wasn't going to stand by and let this guy hurt them.
There was no way I was going to see Tami get hurt again.
I turned towards her and sprinted as fast as I could. The glass shattered above my head. Something came out of my mouth to warn those around us to get away, but I couldn't remember exactly what it was. All I knew was that it was enough for those too scared to move to finally get out of the way. That was all about Tami and the small child she was protecting.
By the time I got to them, I swooped both of them up, one in each arm, before I sprinted out of the way. I could hear the kid screaming and crying at the top of their lungs, but I didn't care. The only thing I worried about was getting these people to safety.
That villain couldn't be taken down by one person. I felt weak knowing that. What was the point of going through all my training if I couldn't handle one villain who just decided to attack out of nowhere?
I looked back, realizing all the glass had finally fallen down. The feathers that scattered around slowly floated back to the villain. One by one, they placed themselves back onto his wings, almost as if they were there the entire time.
Tami and the kid slipped from my arms, and as they did, I knew Tami ran to grab the kid and take the kid as far away as possible. It didn't matter. I just turned around to face the villain, realizing a huge problem. There was no way I could get back to him. Shattered glass covered the floor. It was a huge obstacle that I probably could have overcome, but this was an airpot. All there was was space. Nothing hung from the ceiling that I could attempt to swing across or no tables or booths I could leap from. The only thing that stood in this terminal were gigantic metal pillars that were spread too far apart and too wide to do anything with.
All I could do was make sure he didn't get close to them. It didn't matter though. He already told me who he was after. While I didn't do anything to him that I could remember, I was his number one target. If he couldn't get to me, then it was Tami.
The villain pushed himself off the ground and flew towards me. His wings closed into his body, almost as if he needed the speed. My right foot swung to the back, widening my stance for a moment as I brought my fists in front of me. There was no way I was going to let this guy get anywhere close to me.
But I didn't have to worry about that. The villain was getting close when, out of nowhere, something slammed into him. I turned around, seeing a group of Pro Heroes rushing to the scene. There wasn't one hero I recognized, but it didn't matter. One of them pushed me out of the way and told me to stay out of the way. I nearly wanted to scream at them that I was a Pro Hero too and that I could help, but before those words could come out of my mouth, someone grabbed my shoulder.
"Young man, you've done enough for now," a low voice informed. I turned back to see a man just a bit shorter than me standing there. On his chest gleamed a golden badge with the words "Fairfield Police Department". "You did good, but the Optimo Agency can handle this.
As much as I didn't want to, I relaxed. My muscles shrank to their normal size. If these heroes didn't want my help and could handle it, then by all means, let them.
I just wasn't expecting my first day in America to be like this.

The good news about being pulled away from the action was that I could find Tami. Everyone who was hit was being treated by some sort of nurse. As for Tami, I saw her and a nurse walk out of the bathroom. Tami's left arm wrapped around her stomach as her eyes winced every once in a while. Her pink top was still coated in blood. While that was enough to make anyone worried, I had a gut feeling that it wasn't her blood.
I carefully walked over towards her and the nurse that was with her. When I did, I caught a small vile of blood clenched inside the nurse's hand.
"What's that for?" I questioned, looking at the nurse.
"This girl was hit by feathers that were dirty, so we're just going to run some tests. No worries, I'm sure she will be fine," the nurse told me before looking at Tami. "Now, why don't you tell me where the rest of your party is."
Tami didn't look up as she told her. "He's right here. I should be fine."
Nothing more was said as the nurse simply nodded and walked away. I didn't watch where she went, knowing she was probably just going to put that vial and the information on it in a safe place. If not, then she probably went to another person who needed medical attention. None of that was my top priority at that moment. Instead, I just looked right at Tami, who kept avoiding my gaze.
She knew what I was about to say. Despite that, I didn't care.
"Were you not thinking at all?" I asked her as I crossed my arms over my chest. "I told you to get out of the way. That villain could have killed you!"
"She—she was Ollie's age," Tami whispered. "She was coming back from vacation, and she lost her family. I couldn't leave her."
I sighed. Here, I thought the only person Tami would do something as crazy as that was her little brother, Oliver. The two were close, closer than any other siblings should have been. There wasn't one time I saw either of them fight. For some odd reason, they just got along.
But...knowing what happened to those two about three years ago, it made sense. There was a villain who kidnapped both of them, and used her little brother as leverage. Ever since, Tami had become a bit more protective over him.
Thinking about it, she was always protective over her brother, even before that incident.
"Look," I said. "I'm not angry. I just don't want to see you hurt again, so at least give me a heads up next time."
Tami nodded her head, but was still silent. I looked down, noticing a small pool of tears stuck in her eyes. My shoulders sank when I saw them. I never knew how to deal with someone when they were acting like that. The only thing I knew was that I wanted it to stop.
So, I stopped them. I took my thumb and pressed them under her eyes in attempts to wipe them away. Tami slowly looked up at me as I took my thumb across her left eye. Everything about her screamed that it wasn't her fault. She was innocent in this entire thing. I knew that. Tami would never hurt anyone, but I just wanted her to stop crying.
Telling her to stop just wasn't going to cut it.
"That girl," I asked, "did you get her to her family?"
Tami nodded her head. "They left not too long ago. None of them had serious injuries. I—we're free to go too. The nurse has my phone number, so as long as I'm with—" her eyes widened for a moment as she changed the subject. "Amy! I totally forgot, my cousin was supposed to meet us here. You don't think she—"
I dropped my hand away from her face. "There were no deaths. I just got interrogated by the police on what happened, and that was one thing they could confirm. Everything else is still being interrogated. Amy's probably waiting outside or something. Don't worry."
Instead of listening to me, Tami's lips pressed together. She slowly turned her head around as her right hand reached for the back of her neck. It was the same gesture she would do anytime she was nervous, or, in other words, when she'd worry about something.
If only there was some way I could keep her calm, I'd do it. Tami didn't deserve to be anxious and worried all the time. Honestly, I understood why she was, but I just wish there was a way I could get her to relax. Just telling her to do that was never good enough.
There was only one way I could reassure her.
"Why don't we go look for her," I offered, as I lifted my hand for her to take if she wanted to.
That was all I had to say to see a faint smile on Tami's lips. It was almost hard to miss how tense she was, but it was there. Seeing it, I almost wanted to smile too.
Except I couldn't. Not with what that winged villain had said. He knew my name. He sounded as if he came from Japan, so he must have followed us onto the plane.
Just what did I do to cause such a big mess?
Author's Note:
Early update this week as I know this week and late of next week will be busy, so I figured updates in the beginning of the week would fit best.
I don't really have a lot to say for this, so let's just jump into the chapter Question. The villain in this chapter has the exact same Quirk as Hawks (cuz I thought that'd be a tough Quirk to beat if needbe). I want to know, who do you think has the coolest Quirk from the anime, and if you had that Quirk, what would you do with it?
Can't wait to hear from you all! Until next time...take care!!
Character Spotlight: Raiden Yamamoto
Quirk: Ultra Strength
Likes: Cross Training
Music: Elysia Trailer from Honkai Impact extended version (I nearly saved this for something else, but it fits so why not).
