Max's POV

I woke up with a headache the size of a mountain. Hiei was sleeping on his arm at the end of the bed. The area I was in was unfamiliar. It was a hospital room, with a view of the new staging arena from the window.

"Your awake" Hiei sat up, deep black bags under his eyes. 

"What happened to me" I tried to move and Kurama put his hand on my shoulder, preventing me from moving very much.

"We thought they had killed you, Max" Botan was sitting in the corner with puffy red eyes. 

"What happened to me" I looked at Hiei. 

"We won the Dark tournament," Yusuke said, dodging the question again. 

"What the he** happened to me!" Genkai walked in, followed by a doctor who was smart enough to turn around and walk out 

"Someone tell the poor girl, winning was the only reason she is alive" She looked at me, then to everyone. 

"The older Toguro brother..." Hiei trailed off. 

"He killed you when you denied to join their team" Yusuke finished. 

"And the group decided on the wish being" I pointed to myself. "Was to bring me back"

"Yah"

Hiei's POV

(Before the accident)

Max should have been back from telling the younger Toguro brother that she would not join their team. I was looking out the window, waiting for her to show up. 

"Hiei" Botan walked over and sat by me. "How about we look for her" 

"Alright" I was too worried about her to argue.

By the time we left the hotel, everyone on our team was looking for Max. We had walked a little ways away before Kuwabara started running. 

"Her spirit energy!" he ran frantic. "She's losing a lot of it quickly!"

I ran faster as I saw the elder Toguro brother looming over her. He was smiling and whispering to her body. The younger Toguro was leaning agents a tree looking almost more pissed off than normal. 

"Toguro!" I took my sword and jabbed the older one before pulling towards his brother. 

"We shall see you in the ring, Hiei" THat was it before they both disappeared out of sight. 

Kuwabara was holding Max's hand as Yusuke and Kurama were pressing Kuramas jacket to her stomach and arm before I realized what was happening. Kurama's jacket was dripping with blood. I ran over to see Max pale faced and clutching the grass in one hand and Kuwabara's in the other. After I came over I could feel her spirit energy leaving her body. 

"Hiei she's losing too much blood for us to move her." Kurama moved his dripping jacket and putting Botans extra on the wound. 

It was deep to the point that surgery would do nothing for it. 

"Hiei I should have left with you" She laughed a little, blood dripping from her mouth to her hair. 

"You should have" I wanted to cry as I held her cold soft hand. "don't leave please"

"I'm like you" she coughed more blood dripping down her cheeks to her hair. "Too stubborn to leave-"

"No Max!" her eyes drifted and everyone began to freak out, ambulance sirens coming through the trees. 

"Move for the emergency team" an EMS girl ran over with a kit, followed by multiple others. 

"Hiei you have to move" Yusuke grabbed my shoulder and I shoved it off hard. 

"I won't leave her!" I said before I was picked up and pulled away.

"I'm sorry Hiei" Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara picked me up carrying me away from her. 

"I was supposed to protect her!" I shed one tear which turned into a gem falling into the grass below.
