Chapter 4
As the days passed by, the time until the entrance exam drew shorter and shorter, until it was inevitably time for it.
Midoriya was a bundle of nerves as he stood in front of UA, so he decided to focus on something else. That is, finding Insomnicat. The night before, Insomnicat had told him to find someone with eyebags leaning against the tree, and say a code word. If the person responded in a certian way, he would know that it was Insomnicat. He hadn't specified how he would respond, though, only saying that he'd know when he heard it.
He scaned the area, and it wasn't to hard to spot the tall, purple haired boy leaning against a tree with his hands shoved in his pockets, looking half asleep.
He hesitantly approached the boy, "Um... Eraser-cat?"
"You look like you belong in this tree." Was the response he got, and he instantly knew that yeah, this is Insomnicat.
However, he chose to shake his head sadly, walking away, "Sorry, I thought you were someone else."
"Hey, I was telling the truth!! It's meee, your bestest friend!!" Insomnicat said, although his tired tone didn't quite match with the phrase 'bestest friend'.
Midoriya chuckled, "yeah, I knew. I was messing with you. Oh, my real name is Midoriya, by the way."
Insomnicat nodded to himself, "Fitting name. You really are green.... Shinsou, it's cool too meet you in person, I guess."
"Well... I guess we should head to the entrance exams now?"
Shinsou nodded, "Yeah, the General Studies one is first. This way"
Midoriya followed him too a large auditorium, with lots of open seats left over. "Looks like not a lot of people try for General Studies.."
"Yeah"
The two of them found a place to sit together, and soon enough, Ectoplasm and his clones began passing out the test papers. Midoriya had to restrain himself from fanboying at Ectoplasm, which Shinsou chuckled at.
The testing area went quiet, and everyone got to work on the tests. They mostly focused on academics, but some of the end questions seemed like they were to help the students pick a career path. That made sense, he supposed. General Studies wasn't really focused on any particular career path, unlike the other three courses, so he could see why they'd think that most people applying wouldn't have a set career path yet.
He wasn't sure whether it was true or not for most, but he knew it wasn't true for him and Shinsou. The two of them wanted to be heroes, and while he couldn't entirely speak for Shinsou, he knew that he wouldn't stop at anything to do it.
Midoriya wasn't too worried about his score on the written exam. He wasn't the smartest in his class by any means, but he had decently high scores, so he should be able to pass the test.
It was the practical heroics exam that he was worried about. Shinsou had said that it was biased towards flashy quirks, so chances were he'd end up failing it, even if Shinsou didn't. Of course, that's why they were applying for General Studies as well.
The test time ended, and the two of them left the auditorium to head to the heroics entrance exam. This time the auditorium was filled to the brim, which wasn't all that surprising. Everyone wanted to be a hero, honestly.
This time, the two of them couldn't sit together, because of how full the area was. Worse, Midoriya had ended up next to Bakugou. Luckily, all Bakugou did was glare at him, but Midoriya knew well enough that after the exams were over, he was screwed.
There was another written exam, which was a bit annoying since it meant that he had to answer the same questions twice, but he didn't complain. The questions at the end were different, though. Some of them were moral based, some based on quirk usage, some on combat situations, and other questions that seemed hero-related in some way.
He was less confident in his answers in that area, despite all the hero analysis he did. Everyone he ever showed it to only ever said that it was silly, or creepy, or sometimes called him a stalker. Well, other than Shinsou. Shinsou told him that his analysis was good, but while it felt nice to have someone compliment it, it wasn't enough to boost his confidence in it.
Once the time for the written exams was up, Present Mic walked up onto the stage, "Hello, little listeners!!! Can I get a 'yeah'?"
While Midoriya was tempted to respond, one glare from Bakugou kept him quiet, and it felt like the rest of the people there were also effected by the glare, as no response came.
"Aw, tough crowd.. Welcome to the practical exams!! I'm here to explain the rules, so let's get started, shall we? In this test, you'll be fighting robots!!!"
Internally, Midoriya groaned. He wasn't entirely sure why, but he had a feeling Shinsou was doing the same.
"There are three different types of robots, and each type is worth a different amount of points! Your goal is too get as many points as possible in order to pass! And of course, playing anti-hero isn't allowed, so don't go attacking your fellow examinees. Any questions?"
A stiff hand from somewhere in the crowd shot up, and the owner of the hand didn't wait to be called on before speaking, "Excuse me, but while you only mentioned three robots, this hand-out shows four!! If this is a mistake, UA should be ashamed!!"
Present Mic didn't seem bothered by the student's rather aggressive seeming tone, as he grinned and said, "Don't worry about that robot! It's the zero pointer, so it's not actually worth anything. Just think of it as an obstacle!! Is that all the questions?"
No one else seemed to have anything to say, so Present Mic nodded, "Well, let's get this exam started!! Can I get a 'Plus Ultra'?!"
Once again, Present Mic was met by silence.
Everyone went out to UA's fake cities, where the exams would be happening. They waited awhile for it too start, and Izuku found himself looking around for Shinsou, too no avail.
Present Mic called the start of the exam, and the crowds of students rushed inside, trying to get points.
Midoriya tried to get some points as well, but everyone destroyed the robots before he could try to.
Then, came the zero pointer.
As soon as it arrived, everyone was scrambling to get away from it, himself included. The thing was huge, larger than most of the buildings in the fake city!! He wasn't sure what about this made Present Mic think it was 'just an obstacle'!
By the end of the exam, Midoriya had no points.
He wouldn't be needing a letter to know that he had failed, and the same went for Shinsou, if the look on his face meant anything.
