Chapter 57
Author PoV - trigger warning, everyone!! (thank you, @CIRCUSFENCER for reminding me!!)
Chaeyoung hesitates to knock on Jungkook's office door.
On her way here, she was excited to see him during lunch break. She thought, maybe he wanted to eat out again with Jiyoon after 3 days of never ending lunch meetings both of them had to attend.
Before going here, she left Jiyoon with Cole. It was weird, because Cole told her that Jungkook asked him to entertain Jiyoon while he and Chaeyoung would talk for a few minutes.
There was no one in the hallways, probably the took their lunch breaks outside of the building. Even Rachel isn't seated on her chair in front of Jungkook's office room.
She breathed deeply and tried to bring herself to knock on his door. Why did she suddenly feel nervous?
With force, she knocks on the door 3 times and waited for the response. Her hand gripped the handle of her bag tightly. Her feet started to shake.
Maybe it's her fatigue from the operation room? Lately, she's been given a lot of the hard surgeries after she and Jungkook fixed things through. The stamina she used to have in the operation room is still building its way up.
That's right, Chaeyoung just got off a 2-processed surgery. The first process was finished at around 1 in the morning, and she did the second half at 7:30 today.
Again, she knocked on the door.
There was no response. Usually, it would be Rachel to tell her that she can enter Jungkook's office but with no Rachel around, she doesn't know if she can or she can't.
I'll just enter, maybe he killed himself in there. She thought.
Without waiting for a response, she entered.
Jungkook was seated on his chair, his eyes is glued to a document and he did not bother to look at Chaeyoung.
Chaeyoung sighed, knowing that he did not kill himself. She laughed off her stupidity in the back of her head. Why would she think that he killed himself? Among all of her business-related friends, Jungkook is probably the happiest one.
Since he's the boss, he can just scold whenever he likes. Of course, she knows, he's not like that. His office workers are particularly close to him, he talks to them a lot and always asks the company's suggestions.
That's his father's number 1 rule. The company is democratic, not an absolute monarchy government.
She walked to his desk, placed her bag on the chair that was placed in front of his desk.
"Kook?" she called.
His eyes were still glued to the papers he was reading. Jungkook examined every piece of information in the DNA testing results, word per word. And he did his best to understand the scientific words, even if he didn't, he understood the main point.
"Jungkook?" Chaeyoung called once more.
This time, he looked at her.
Ah, you're here. Let's eat out? He wanted to say, but held himself back.
"Take a seat," he gestured to the chair that was placed in front of him.
She chuckled, nervously and sat down, "Are we serious talking or do you need some space because you're stressed with work?"
She noticed that there was no glee in his eyes. The small eye smile he makes, whenever they talk with each other. Or the charming looks he pulls on Chaeyoung.
"Are there people outside?" he asked, and placed the paper down.
"No, I was actually surprised. Why? What's happening?"
He grabbed the blue envelope and took another folder and started browsing it. Chaeyoung stretched, trying to see what he was reading but she couldn't see it.
The silence was filled by Jungkook's continuous sighs and the slow shaking of his head.
"Jungkook, is there something wrong?" she asked, finally breaking the silence.
His eyes look up, but not his head, and back down into the folder.
She placed her hand on the his hand that was resting on his desk.
"If you're stressed with work, I can leave you and give you space--"
She got shocked when his hand slammed the table.
"That's where you're good at, leaving is your talent, isn't it?" he asked, trying to dare her into a do-or-die game.
"That's not what I meant, Jeon Jungkook," she furrowed her brows. "I meant, I can go down and have lunch with Jiyoon, if you need some time alone. Why do you think am I gonna leave you? No way, Jungkook, I love you."
She grabbed his hand and intertwined it with hers then rested her cheek on it.
But he quickly grabbed it from her.
"What's the matter with you?" she asked. "You know what, I think you need some time to calm yourself down. I know, it would be really mean to leave you like this but I'm really tired from the hospital too."
Still, he looked at her in silence.
Then she stood up and grabbed her bag from the other seat and walked out, slowly.
In her defence, she is really tired from work. She tried her best not to sleep in the hospital quarters and had to commute her way home. Not to mention, that there were no busses or trains moving at 1 in the morning.
When she arrived in her house, she was relieved to see that Jiyoon turned off the lights, made sure the doors were locked, the sinks weren't on and the TV wasn't on. She was relieved that Jiyoon took the responsibility.
It was about time to let Jiyoon grow and be responsible.
"Jeon Ji Yoon."
She heard the name before she even reached the door.
Chaeyoung stood there, frozen.
Maybe this is why I got scared. She said to herself. Cole told him, huh?
This isn't the time to runaway, anymore. Now that Jungkook knew about the tiny secret she kept for 5 years. She was happy he knew, and scared that he knew.
Was this the reason why he was quiet all along?
Or was the papers he was reading the documents that Cole gathered for the proof that they're related?
She turned around, facing him.
Now she was frightened because of his look. He looked angry. But she tried to fill herself with positive thoughts, that Jungkook will accept Jiyoon.
All the time, she thought he would. Because the 2 are exceptionally close. But why is his looking showing the other way around?
"That's her real name?" he asked, raising his brow.
He grabbed the paper he was reading and showed it to her.
The real birth certificate of Jiyoon. He was holding the real one in front of her, the one she begged her friend to give her a certificate that can fool the people around her.
Chaeyoung was really smart to have done that.
"Were you planning on telling me this?" he asked her.
It was her turn to not answer.
It felt like everything around her stopped. She couldn't process what's happening at all. Of course, she was planning on telling him that he was the father but she waited for a moment. For the right moment to tell him that.
He didn't look like he is well-adjusted to his new position in work, how much more pressure will it add to him if she just suddenly says he's a father?
She didn't want to be more selfish than how she already is.
"Were you planning on telling me this?!" he shouted, slamming his hand on the desk again.
"J-J-Jungkook, calm d-d-down," she stuttered.
He stood up from his chair and walked to her, but he distanced himself about a meter from her.
"You knew and you didn't tell me?!"
She stepped her one foot back, "I was going to, but you didn't seem to be adjusted in work and I was only---"
"We know each other fo 7 fucking months, and you had all your damn time but you didn't even bother to tell me anything about me being related to your fucking daughter."
"She's not just my daughter, she's also yours! I wanted to tell you, but I fell for you and I--"
He scoffed, "You and your love crap, Roseanne."
He spoke in English, and said her English name.
"You're a fucking scandal, Roseanne Park," he spitted his words, not thinking that Chaeyoung was getting hurt too.
Does he know how many sacrifices she made just because of their child? Or how much she wanted to tell him, even before Jiyoon was born, but couldn't because of the security around him?
He has a big name, a big reputation, why can't he consider that? A reason why she couldn't bring herself to tell him the truth.
The tears in her eyes were starting to flow down. But she tried to hold it in, because if she doesn't, he will probably say she's annoying.
Everything I did had its own reason. She thought.
Everything she had to do, be it putting mud on her name or not, she had a reason. When it comes to the people she romantically loved, she becomes stupid and blinded by the reality.
"A Jeon raised outside of the family?" he scoffed.
She did not want him to call her kid a disgrace, just because she didn't start education the way he did. When she was still pregnant, she tried to find a school in Seoul that would give Jiyoon quality English lessons and Math lessons.
She made sure that Jiyoon would possess talents, like all the other rich kids who had enough money to pay for lessons and coaches.
"Yeah, a Jeon raised in out of your family. That's right, she's your daughter too," she said, bravely.
He walked a step closer, "Who do you think you are, Chaeyoung? You kept her identity from the public, when she's supposed to live under it? She's supposed to learn about this complicated family that you brought her in to."
"What kind of mother do you think I am, Jungkook? I did not want my child to be raised in a high status like you!"
He threw his hands up in the air, "Then you should've aborted her!"
"Abort her?" she walked to him and gripped his collar then started to punch him softly. "Who do you think I am, Jungkook?! I'm not a prostitute! Never...Never in my life was I told to have aborted Jiyoon! Never in my life did I imagine you to tell me that! How dare you! How dare you!"
Then he pushed her off of him and slapped her with his right hand. Causing Chaeyoung to hold her cheek.
She felt the redness from the impact of his dominant hand.
Without another 5 seconds, he grabbed her using his hand. Gripping her chin and holding it tight then throwing her to the ground.
"A daughter of mine living in the brink of poverty? Nonsense. What kind of mother are you? The kind that will forget that she has a child, that's the kind of mother you are," he plainly said.
"Your father and I already talked about the custody. She's under your name, then fine, take her. It's true that I can't give her my full support, but I know a mother's love is different from that of a father's. There's no argument that I raised during my talk with your father, once you knew, she's going to live under your house," she stated the facts.
But inside, she was broken into pieces.
The facts that she agreed on.
Jiyoon can live a better life with Jungkook. Like what he said, not in the brink of poverty. Always on top, given the quality life Jiyoon deserves.
She stood up from the floor and walked, but Jungkook harshly grabbed her wrist.
"No one leaves this room, not until I say so," he said.
She turned around, "What more do you want? Jungkook, I wanted to tell you because you deserve to know the truth. Circumstances were always in the way! I never loved you because of who you are in the public, I love you because you're the man I want to be with forever. And she..Jiyoon--"
He looked to his side, but Chaeyoung's hand pulled him back to face her, "Look at me, please, Jungkook? We can work this out. Like what we promised, we're gonna work things out starting from 2 weeks ago."
"Your sugarcoating won't work," he took her hand off his cheek. "Leave, and never show your face to Jiyoon and me again."
Then he grabbed her hand and walked to the door, he pushed her out and quickly locked her outside.
She pounded her hand on the door, asking him to open it. The tears in her eyes were flowing down, with more sadness than ever. More than what she felt with Junhoe.
And in the other side of the room, Jungkook sat on his couch and placed his elbows on his laps. His face was covered with his hands, the amount of guilt and regret he has ruling him out.
"I knew you were the person I had sex with that night," he murmured and sobbed more. "Why didn't I bother to look for you?"
He breathed for air multiple times, "I could've been a better father and man to you and her..why is this..happening to both of us all the time?"
While Chaeyoung kneeled in front of the office door, her hands hurting from pounding. The tears on her eyes ruining the make up she did.
She stood up and wiped her face off with her handkerchief and walked to the direction of the elevator. But in the main lobby of floor, Cole and Jiyoon sat on the couches, playing some sort of hand game.
Cole saw Chaeyoung, and he knew their talk did not go well. When he stood up, he also straightened Jiyoon out, signalling her that her mom is here.
Chaeyoung stared at Jiyoon for a few seconds, like what she promised, the custody is with the Jeons once Jungkook figures out. The fact that she won't see her anymore started to hurt her and made the tears fall down even more.
"Should I leave you both, Ma'am?" Cole asked Chaeyoung.
She nodded, "Yes, that would be nice, Cole."
He follows her and walked to the hallway, immediately stopping and tried to over hear their conversation.
Chaeyoung wiped her tear with her hand, and kneeled down to Jiyoon who was seated on the couch.
"Eomma, why are you crying?" she asked and hugged her. "Did Jungkook-appa hurt you because if he did--!!"
Jiyoon sounded like she was joking, of course she could never get mad at Jungkook because both of them are the best of friends. That's how Chaeyoung wanted Jiyoon to see, that she's leaving the picture but not making it obvious to her.
"Ani, ani," she smiled and laughed. "Jiyoon, do you want to know who your father is?"
The eyes of Jiyoon shined brighter than the sun. Her smile forming from ear-to-ear, and her face showed how excited she is.
"You know who my dad is?! Eomma, really?? Who is he, who is he??"
Chaeyoung smiled, "Eomma knows who your dad is. Make sure to believe me, okay? Or else you won't get to meet him."
"Okay, okay, I promise! Cross my heart until I die!" Jiyoon smiled.
Then Chaeyoung placed her forehead against Jiyoon's, "Don't forget about eomma, arasseo? Even when your appa is there already."
"I'll never forget my eomma, she's the best mom in the world!"
Chaeyoung smiled after Jiyoon said those words, it warmed her heart. But it's the last of it.
"But eomma, stop crying," Jiyoon said. "I'll always love my mom."
Chaeyoung hugged her tighter, and the tears flowed down faster. More emotions were pouring down, and her heart was starting to break to a million pieces once again.
She doesn't want to but she has to.
Then when Chaeyoung felt like her time was up, she released Jiyoon from the hug. She wiped her tears off of her face and pushed the baby hair on Jiyoon's face away and tucked it behind her ears.
"Your appa is Jungkook," she said.
Jiyoon's mouth dropped, "Jinjja?!"
Chaeyoung nodded and forced a smile, "He's your real dad, love. I'm sorry for not telling you any sooner, mom's starting to get old too."
"YES! I HAVE THE BEST PARENTS IN THE WORLD!!!!" she smiled and raised a fist in the air.
"Go hug him, love. He's in his office," Chaeyoung told Jiyoon.
Jiyoon nodded and ran off to Jungkook's office.
But when Jiyoon was out of her sight, she pressed the elevator button and entered it. Without telling her daughter she's gonna leave.
She's gonna leave the picture of the perfect family, that Jiyoon has.
As she exits the elevator, she ran out of the building and quickly got into a taxi.
Her dream of being a perfect family with him, will never come true at all.
