Chapter 41
Chaeyoung PoV
I wave a good-bye to Jiyoon as Jungkook helped her up the front seat of his car.
Actually, today, I have work.
The John Hopkin's patient was approved to have the surgery in Korea, with me as the head surgeon. After that, I was granted to attend an annual meeting for neurosurgeons by the Hopkin's hospital.
It's pretty big, that meeting was only for members of the society. And I have never even tried to get a membership in the neurosurgery society.
So today, I was planning to just go to the hospital and get the information about the patient so I can study it here at home.
At the same time, I miss seeing Namjoon-sunbae. He took over my patients while I was gone and I feel bad about it.
Finally, when the car left, I go back inside the house and change into my work clothes. My Hye Jin hospital doctor's coat on my hand, my black sling bag around my body, my white blouse tucked in my skirt.
And I walked to the bus station.
This reminds me of my first few months as an intern. When I relied on the bus more than the car. It was the times where I was afraid to bring my car to work because my status was still an intern, and intern's barely have any salary.
I walk in the bus, just on time and tapped my card near the bus driver's seat and walked inside. The bus isn't full since it isn't rush hour yet, and there were only people who I presume had night shifts in their jobs.
Slowly, as the bus passed by more stops, the bus got a little more tighter. Then I pressed the red button to signal that I'll go off.
I hate tight spaces, and the hospital is close to this stop. If I went down on the hospital's bus station, I would've fainted because of how many people were trying to fit inside the bus.
Now that I left the bus, I walk to the hospital. Bad timing, I always wear heels to work, not unless it's Wednesday which is also known as 'Accident' Day for surgeons. It's Monday and usually meetings will flood my schedule.
So I wear heels, dresses or something presentable.
My feet start to ache as I turned to the hospital's entrance.
"Doctor Park?" the guard asked.
"Yes?" I answered and showed my ID, just in case.
He shook his head and let me enter.
I walked uphill towards the hospital's doors. Not to mention the staircases! Gosh! I'm calling for an uber later in the afternoon!
My phone vibrated, and I checked it before I entered.
Jihyo-eonnie told me to stop where I am and turn around. I did so, and I see my whole Hawaiian volunteer team walking also.
I've messaged Jihyo and Chanyeol about my car so they couldn't hitch a ride like we always do. And the rest of the team always takes public transport towards the hospital, so I guess we're all on the same boat.
"You didn't call!" Jihyo tells me. "But we're home!"
"Yeah, and back to reality," Chanyeol sighs. "Let's step in all together."
We all agreed and stepped in together.
"SURPRISE!!!!!!" nurses, doctors, board members, and patients shouted.
A big tarpaulin was held out with confetti messing the hospital's lobby. The big tarpaulin read: 'Welcome Back!' and Chairman Park clapping and congratulation each one of us.
I was surprised that I did not see Ms. Woo. She has been missing for a while now, there was no news about her and I haven't seen in her in the hospital before we left.
The last time I saw was when I was still taking care of Jungkook's mother.
Wherever she is, I hope she stays there. Before she left, there was an argument between her and the Jeon Foundation's executive board members.
It might affect me and Jungkook.
Namjoon-sunbae walks out of the crowd and I ran to him and gave him a hug.
"Aish, jeongmal. You almost caused me a heart attack!" he said. "You're leadership skills were remarkable, hoobae!"
He ruffled my hair, "Just like me!"
"Look who's got some pride!" I said. "It's good to be back, though."
Chairman Park broke the noise by his loud clap, which caused everyone's attention. We all look at him and he was thinking of something.
"First of all, I want to say, to our Hawaiian Medical Mission Team, welcome back," everyone clapped at his words. "1 month and a half maybe too long, but I will give the members today a free day. For the next 24 hours, you aren't a Hye Jin member, but a person relaxing at home."
The medical staff clapped again.
"Now, today, I want all the reports of all the department branches. And I want to speak to Ms. Park Chaeyoung after this!" Chairman Park clapped again. "Now, disperse! Back to your jobs!"
Everyone 'aww'-ed and left the scene.
I looked at sunbae, "Have you noticed something different, sunbae?"
"Hmm? What do you mean? Aside from more patients, what?" he asks.
"Nothing, it's just that I feel..happier than before."
He smiled, "That's a good thing. Besides, you've had enough from sulking over the past, have you?"
"I learned a lot in that mission, and I guess..it's time to start new."
"That's good, Park Chaeyoung. Now go to Chairman before he scolds you," he pushes me. "And I'll see you tomorrow at Jungkook's ball."
I nodded and gave him a thumbs up sign.
I walked to Chairman Park, still standing there and probably looking for me.
"Chairman?" I asked as I stood behind him.
He got startled and looked at me, "My goodness, young lady, I'm not getting any younger!"
We laughed at his joke.
"Why did you call me out, sir?" I asked.
"Oh, about that," he said. "I want to thank for saving lives in the disaster, it wasn't part of your temporary job description. And I understand that you have a daughter, so I want to apologize for separating you both."
"Saving lives, in general, is already part of my job description. Be it temporary or not, sir. About my daughter, sir..she's well-aware that I'm doing this for her own good too. I know I'm a bad parent for not giving time for her, but it's what the world requires me to do--"
He stops me, "Aniya, young one. You aren't a bad parent. If you want to have a competition with me of being a bad parent, you might want to. I don't even know the face of my child, at least you do. So Chaeyoung, I've been ignorant of that fact that you're a mother and not just a surgeon. I've taken general surgery off your tab."
My eyes widened, "What do you mean, sir?"
"You're originally a neurologist, not a general surgeon. All the patients that are under general surgery and are your patients, will be it. The future cases you will handle are all related to neurology. Is that alright?"
"Thank you, sir."
"But, in times of need, I will put the general surgery on your list. Only in emergency cases, and not to mention, you're the new physician of the Jeon and Kang family. They're a big load already," he laughed. "I'll take my leave, enjoy your day off, Ms. Park."
"Thank you, sir."
"And do well in the John Hopkin's case," he says as he walked away.
"Thank you, sir!"
After he left, there was no one with me in the lobby.
Everyone went back to work. Jihyo and Chanyeol were talking to their friends in the nurse stations, the rest of my medical staff were hanging out with each other. So-jun went to the cafeteria and ate the new menu of Daisy.
I walk to my office, making sure I still know where it is located.
The paediatric ward has lesser patients than before. The kids that I used to visit are now discharged, maybe.
My patient that had leukemia also passed away while I was gone. She was under Namjoon-sunbae because I was out, and I hadn't even started doing any procedure on her.
The nursery room is more quiet than before. The babies were sound asleep as it is still 8 or 9 in the morning.
I turned to the the left and find my office door opened. Maybe the residents and interns that weren't with me are overworking themselves for their thesis again.
How many times did I tell them that they should not overwork themselves just because of a thesis paper. And the room is probably dirty, as well!
I entered, no one was there. The ceiling fan was on, the tables were arranged properly, our meeting area's books are placed on the shelf, my office inside the room is clean.
Did these guys just learn something?
The papers about the John Hopkin's case were on the meeting area's table, notes were spread out neatly, and CT scans and proposal surgery procedures were all listed on the white board. A picture of the CT scan of the patient is flashed on the projector.
These guys have been studying well.
I opened the door to my office and see a pile of grey folders on my table. All were labeled with my resident's thesis titles, when their thesis started and when it ended.
As their professor, I have to read it all one-by-one and approve if they can pass it to their school. There's only been one person I did not approve the thesis, and she was able to graduate because she paid money.
That's right, Tzuyu.
She didn't even make a thesis, how can I approve her?
Then I took the big file with the label: 'JOHN HOPKINS' on it and decided to go home. Or maybe go to Jungkook this lunch.
Oh, right! I have a meet-up with the girls!
But honestly, I want to go with Jungkook and probably pick up Jiyoon. The 3 of us can go around Hongdae and shop or skip her piano lessons today.
When I was about to leave, I turned to my look at my cork board inside my office. It's full of reminders about the operation room's schedules and hospital rules. But there was one that isn't part of the board.
A blue paper was pinned on the cork board.
"We promised young love."
It said.
I shrug it off, thinking it was one of my resident's self-notes or inspirational notes.
Then I walk out of my office room, and back to the lobby. Asking the guard to hail me a taxi so I can go to Jungkook's work place.
The blue paper crept in my mind.
What should I worry about?
If it were for me, then it would've said for whom it was addressed for. Blue used to be my favorite color before claiming that black is my new favorite color.
I shrug, again.
Don't worry, Chae, whatever that is, you've got Jungkook for you.
----
oh really?
see you again next update!
