Chapter 33

Chaeyoung PoV

"Cardiac arrest!"

"Quick, CPR!"

I put my hands together and kneeled beside our Korean representative, Mr. Lee.

He was found under a big cemented piece, yelling 'help'. When they finally rescued him, he was placed inside the medical hut for first aid but all of a sudden he had a seizure.

My hands positioned itself on the chest of Mr. Lee, and I quickly did a CPR.

"1, 2, 3," I counted.

It's tiring to do CPR. My hands started to turn red because of it, but Mr. Lee was the father of our group the whole time we were here. He has a special place with us, and he was the kindest person to us here.

I don't want anyone to die.

No one should die.

"Doctor Park," the Swedish doctor took off my hands from Mr. Lee's chest. "He's dead."

"No," I said and did CPR again. "He's not dead. If you only placed the right injection.."

My eyes started to water.

"Doctor Park!" the Swedish doctor yelled and bowed his head. "Call it. As a doctor, learn how to let go."

I wiped my tears and covered my face. Then I looked at the dead count board and I didn't want to add another one.

The Swedish doctor rubbed his hand on my back and the foreign nurses covered Mr. Lee with a blue cloth. They were going to start carrying him and put him in a green bag.

"Call it, Ms. Park," he said.

I looked at my watch, "Lee Shin-Seo...time of death, Hawaiian time...1:54 PM."

I closed my eyes and more tears kept on coming.

"It's okay, Doctor Park. You were absolutely incredible to have reacted like that," he said. "If it weren't for you, he would've died completely because of cardiac arrest and I wouldn't have performed CPR. You're a hero, never forget that."

I nodded to him and he stood up and tended to injured patients.

The Korean soldier who was assigned under the UN military, did a salute and placed a small Korean flag on Mr. Lee's bag.

He sighed, "Lee Shin-Seo, dead count number 9."

I stood up and tried to breath deeply.

Like what Namjoon-sunbae said to me in my operation before. Never let your emotions get to you first. Deal with it behind the scenes. But the sight of seeing people dead, back to back is making me cry.

No one deserves this. Not them. They were helping the world become a better place..and they easily die off like that.

Without me noticing, my tears were starting to crawl off to my cheeks. Seeing lifeless people is too much for me too handle.

I squatted on the ground, and covered my face.

"You can't possibly break down here, can you?"

I looked up to my right and saw him there, "Jungkook-ah.."

He squatted next to me, "You're an amazing person, you know that?"

I shook my head, "If I had performed the CPR quicker, then Mr. Lee would still be alive."

"No, life's just like that. People come and go."

I stay there quiet, "How're you here?"

"Me?" he pointed to himself. "I just want you home."

"Stay strong, Chaeng."

I look up to the sky and realized I was only daydreaming.

When I turned to my right, Jungkook wasn't there. It was only an imagination of mine.

Then I stood up and wiped my cheeks and walked back to the medical hut. I helped out by giving injections, materials needed.

As I gave out some medical needs, I turned to my right to see Yeri also doing CPR to a foreign UN member. I rushed to her, making sure I'm able to save this one.

"Professor!" Yeri yelled.

I turned my right hand into a fist and started to hit the chest with my fist. Screw medical procedures, I hate dead patients. I despise the word 'deceased'.

"Professor Park!" Yeri shouted.

Then the UN member started to breath heavily.

I looked at Yeri, "In urgent times, you don't need to follow the rules and regulations."

"Yeah, but you could've killed him!"

"He's breathing now, isn't he? Where's the part where he dies?"

"Nowhere but don't do reckless actions just like that. We're professionals here, I know you're tired too and I think you should rest. This is taking emotional toll on you," she folded her arms.

"You're my resident, you cannot boss me," I laughed and turned around.

I handed out a haemoglobin injection to one of the foreign doctors. My share of saving people is enough. I've decided to rest from it because I performed 2 surgeries in the middle of a battle ground between natural disasters and humans then I take over patients from doctors who freezes when something wrong happens.

That's why I don't trust some of the younger doctors right now. Yeri's fine, she's a resident under my teaching and of course, I push all of my residents hard during operations. But the rest aren't as emotion-trained like Yeri.

They all cry when something wrong happens. Like their minds suddenly stop working.

A man held my hand and I looked at him. He was panting, covered in sweat and dirt, looking at me in panic.

He shouted, "The general asks you to go in the building with our team. There's something you need to see."

I nodded and got the emergency backpack, filled with the medicine, injections and other medical materials in it.

I ran behind him and we stopped at the 2nd entrance that they made a few hours ago. Before they allowed me to step in, they gave me a white safety hat and one of those vests.

When I walked in, the place was all so rocky and dark.

They told me to hold on to the Sergeant in case there's something that will happen. Once we were through this small passage, they showed me a place where a steel rod was placed on top of a boulder-looking like...thing?

"Aish, save me already, will ya?!" another man yelled with a Korean accent.

"Sir, we have to wait for a doctor," another man answered.

"Doctor?! I'm perfectly fine! Now get me outta here!"

The Sergeant turned to me, "He's the body guard of the head Korean representative. And his waist down is trapped between a steel rod andnthe stair case cement."

"What..." I gasped. "Why..am I here?"

"He can be still saved. We just need to know what first aid you can do before we rush him out. You can check on him first before we do anything."

I nodded and walked to the man.

He looked at me and rolled his eyes, "Your the doctor? Tell them to get me out."

I smiled, "It's clear you're having a hard time speaking in English."

"FINALLY! A KOREAN!" he yells.

"Before we get you out, I need to ask you a bunch of things."

"Hurry, coz I'm really hungry."

I laughed, "Alright. Where do you feel the pain most?"

He thought first, "My stomach area."

"Can you feel your entire body?"

He shook his head, "Little part of it is numb."

I turned on the flashlight and checked his feet, "Try moving your feet?"

He tried and looked at me, "It's moving, right? I'm really fine! Just get me out of here."

"Yeah, it's moving. I'll tell them to get you out fast."

"Thank you! Someone finally listened!" he smiled and laughed.

I walked towards the sergeant and shook my head.

"What does that mean?" he asked and folded his arms. "There's one more person, she's the head of this project. We got to hurry."

"I need to amputate him," I said.

He took off his ear piece and looked at me, "I'm sorry, you said a word that scares. What was it again?"

"He can be saved, but I need to amputate him or else he dies. Amputation is a procedure where I cut off a certain area of the body. In this case, both his legs need to be amputated. He'll need a wheel chair or get prosthetic legs but for now, I need to operate him in the hospital."

"So we have to rush him out and bring him to the hospital? Is any of your Operation Rooms available?" he asked.

"Korean Hospital is in Channel 6 in the phone."

He took out his radio and turned it on Channel 6, "Hello? This is coming from the UN quarters."

"This is Nurse Jihyo from the Korean Hospital."

"Are there any ORs available?"

"Uhm, OR 2 is available and is under clean up."

"Eonnie, prepare me an amputation operation. 5 people, tell Vernon to prepare himself. I need Yunhyeong's assistance," I interrupted.

"EO?! Amputation surgery?! Ya, Park Chaeyoung, we're all busy! We cannot just--"

"Eonnie, jebal."

"Arasseo, I'll get it prepared. What driller size?"

"Ani, I'll use the oscillating saw."

I looked at the sergeant and he signalled his other teammates to get the bodyguard out of the scene.

They pulled a big rope and the stair case cement was lifted and then 2 men got him. The ground shook as they released pulling the rope.

When the bodyguard was placed on a stretcher, I ran out behind the 2 men that were carrying the stretcher. They placed him inside the ambulance and he started to rebel, I went inside and sat in the ambulance then we headed to the hospital.

"Wh-Where are you taking me?" the bodyguard asked shakily.

"Do you trust in me?"

He nodded.

"Then believe in me when I say, you'll stay alive."
