Chapter 32
Chaeyoung PoV
"We made an entrance, sir!" the man said to the general.
"Get 3 men to enter, and Doctor Park please standby in the medical hut," the general commanded.
I nodded along and took Yeri with me.
As we waited in their so-called medical hut, we were preparing the needles in case we needed it. Yeri was shaking, I guess because of the nervousness and I noticed it. She was scared and traumatised by the earthquake.
We rarely experience this in Korea. Back home, there are safety procedures and we follow the guidelines but here even if the people were well-oriented about earthquake safety, they'd still think twice before moving.
Not to boast about our country, but it's true.
"Found 3 people!" we heard from the crumbled site.
"The Japanese secretary is here!" another shouted.
A lady in a red pencil skirt, red coat and white polo was rushed to the medical hut.
I used the flashlight to see if she's still alive. When I turned the flashlight on, I quickly opened her eyes and she showed signs of life.
She was groaning in pain and crying.
Yeri knew how to speak in Japanese, so I asked her if she can tell me what part of her body hurts a lot. I guess she kept saying 'it hurts' in Japanese because that's what it sounded like.
"She's not answering," Yeri sighed.
"Okay then, the hard way," I told her.
I pressed her shoulders, there were no pain reactions. Pressed her thighs, no reaction. Pressed her arms, no reaction. Pressed her neck, no reaction.
Then she feels pain at her stomach.
When I pressed her stomach she started to hit me with her hand.
Yeri held on her and I got the painkiller to calm her down.
"We need to get her scanned," I told Yeri. "She has an internal injury, we can't operate here."
"Hospitals are full, doc, there must be another way," she argued.
"Treat her bruises, I'll need a space for surgery."
I ran to the American general and poked his shoulder.
There's no way the Japanese lady can be saved without the surgery. Like what Yeri said, all hospitals are full. Even ours, Yunhyeong is probably conducting surgery right now.
I don't need CT-scans.
Hello? I'm Park Chaeyoung. The best doctor, the neurosurgeon who knows how to do general surgery, the doctor with no dead patients.
I'm that person! Hunches are my babies!
"We need to operate," I told him.
The American man looked confused, "In this germ-filled area?! Are you crazy?!"
"True, it's unsanitized. But pick, dead UN member or alive UN member?"
"Give doctor Park a secluded space! Hurry!" he orders 2 men.
"Thanks," I said and I looked at the 2 men. "Please help us carry the lady in red in the medical hut."
They nodded at me and ran to a car.
I wondered, why will the run to a car? Where will they go?
When they left, I felt betrayed but also I needed to remember that I have to trust them in this. No one wants these people dead.
After about 20 minutes, the 2 men came back with an ambulance. Right! I forgot UN has an ambulance for their clinic! Stupid, Chaeyoung.
They parked the ambulance right in front of the medical hut and placed the Japanese lady inside the ambulance. I ran towards the direction of the medical hut and saw Yeri getting the anaesthesia ready and putting 2 disposable scrubs.
"Professor, are you sure both of us can operate alone?" she asked.
I nodded, "Please, you're a student of mine. You should already know that operating alone isn't scary."
"And I also should know that the operation room is the most pressuring area in the world aside from you pressuring us with our thesis," she laughed.
"You need to graduate!" I told her and put on my scrubs. "Anyway, what's the blood type?"
"She's an A. We need blood?"
I nodded, "We aren't operating with back-up RBC, so in case she bleeds too much, the person with blood type A can save her."
Yeri placed her hands on her waist, "Weren't you just confident now, prof?"
"I'm scared to go to jail if she dies."
"Alright then," she got this small megaphone. "Is anyone Blood Type A here? Please head to the medical hut, thank you."
The 2 men who drove the ambulance got off the driver's seat and went to us.
One of them raised his hand, "I'm blood type A."
I widened my eyes, "Well, lucky you! You are joining the operation! Carry her inside, now."
Without time to react, the man who said he has the same blood type with the Japanese woman got scared. Yeri and I went inside and the other man shut the door closed.
Man, ambulances are small. I have to freaking kneel just to operate while Yeri can sit perfectly because she's small.
"Here," the man said and gave me a small stool. "Name's Jerry, by the way."
"Thanks," I smiled.
Yeri placed her hands sideways, "No, professor only date Jungkook."
I laughed because she tried speaking in English, "Scalpel."
We cut through the skin and opened to the stomach.
Honestly, I'm not even thinking. Because right now, I don't even know for sure if the cut is in the stomach. The feeling of cutting to the stomach doesn't feel right.
Yeri and I switched positions frequently because she needed to clear the blood for me to see the insides clearer. While both of us is perfectly normal with situations like this, the man at the back was whining and it started to annoy.
Especially because operating in an ambulance is so fucking uncomfortable.
"Can you shut up?!" I shouted. "We're trying to concentrate."
He covered his mouth, "Right..sorry."
I sliced another cut to make the opening bigger for me to see. Then I relaxed my shoulder because I saw the internal bleeding.
Yeri held the blood in so the lady wouldn't loose too much blood. We already used 3 gauzes and it might too much. There wasn't any monitor to tell us if she's still breathing, in replacement, Yeri just keeps using the stethoscope to hear the heart beat every 2 minutes.
"Prof, it's fainting!" She shouted.
We only placed a small doze of anaesthesia, which means her body can react if something will happen. I did it on purpose to know if she's having a heart attack in the middle of our operation.
"Professor Park!" Yeri shouted.
"Open the line," I told her and got a needle.
I got a needle and sticked into a pipeline then I looked at the man, who seems confused at what's going on.
"We need you to give her some blood, so stay still and stop asking questions," I told him.
He nodded slowly and whimpered in pain when I mercilessly stuck the needle on his vein.
Yeri checked her heartbeat again, for about 3 minutes we were all silent. She looked at me and nodded then I proceeded to the operation.
"Suture," I said.
I was handed the suture with the thread on it already. I stuck the needle on the organ and started closing the internal bleeding.
To be honest with everybody, I hate it when I operate internal bleeding. Especially if you've kept it a secret and decided to go to the doctor last.
Your skin turns red, black or bluish when you don't get an operation really quick. I've seen an operation once, a neuro internal bleeding. It did save the patient but the patient was in coma for 3 days and still died.
Gastro internal bleeding is absolutely one of the bloodiest. There are tendencies where you'll loose blood and suddenly you just have a heart attack. And we just don't know how far the bleeding can go.
I've always turned down internal bleeding surgeries because I hate the fact that I'll get startled inside the OR. Knowing me, I'll start working on my own and not mind whoever is surrounding me.
My first try in internal bleeding operation will forever be last. Until this happened. I had no choice. These people needed saving.
Like the sudden blood loss, I saw it coming but 3 gauzes are not yet enough to say 'she lost blood'.
"We did it," Yeri sighed.
I closed the skin and stitched it up.
"Woah.." Jerry said. "I..just saved a life?"
I looked at him, "Feels good, huh?"
"Nah," he responded. "What feels good is to celebrate my son's first birthday today."
"You have a son?!" Yeri shouted. "Oh, my God! I've been humiliated!"
"Well, I'm a parent too. And it really feels good to celebrate your child's birthday," I smiled. "Tell your son to celebrate it well."
He chuckled, "Is yours a girl or a boy?"
"Girl, but she isn't a handful. There's someone who takes care of her well."
"I guess you're a single mom? But that's okay, at least your daughter isn't as hard headed as mine."
Yeri cleared her throat, "Okay, when we say children, I'll be having them 2 years from now. So can we talk about it in 2 years?"
Jerry looked confused because Yeri said it in Korean.
"She said, we'll talk about this topic when she has kids of her own," I said.
Jerry's mouth formed into an 'O' and laughed.
I took out the needle from Jerry and detached the needle from the Japanese lady. They shared blood so that both had to have a needle stuck to each other.
Then when Jerry walked out and asked to help us bring the Japanese lady into resting in the medical hut, me and Yeri sat on the floor of the ambulance. This was our first time operating, and it definitely won't be the last one today.
"I bet when we come home, our names will be on the news," Yeri said.
I nodded along, "I bet..when we come home..a bunch of people will yell at us."
She looked at me, "What do you mean, professor?"
"Jungkook, Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, Alice, mom and dad for me."
"Oh, then it's only Sooyoung-eonnie for me," she smiled and looked down.
I rubbed her back, "You still haven't found your dad, huh?"
She nodded, "Since they divorced? Yeah, I gave up. That's why Jiyoon shouldn't suffer the same thing, Professor."
"Medic, medic!" a man yelled while carrying a stretcher.
Yeri got off the ambulance and ran to the man.
"But..he's there."
