Bonus - Part 3: Memories
Author PoV
Junghan had a school trip to Daegu for the weekend, and Chaeyoung thought it would be a good time for Jungkook and her to talk about things.
The weekend was amazingly relaxing. Without Junghan, there's no one running around the house, making a mess with the ornaments and the expensive decorations. It was silent.
For the first time in a while.
Jungkook and Chaeyoung spent the Sunday afternoon drinking tea in the balcony. The beautiful spring season made the flowers bloom and the cold but not too cold spring weather was just relaxing.
They spent their little downtime in silence. Just admiring the view of garden and the green landscape.
He wanted to talk to her. About his problems, his work, his frustrations. He wanted to just release the piled up things and let it go. But he didn't know what to say, he didn't know where to start.
But being the wife, Chaeyoung obviously knew what's going on around Jungkook. She tolerated his temper throughout their marriage, she took care of their kids, she was a mother and father.
Of course, it was all thanks to Jungkook's father who asked Chaeyoung to extend her patience and try to understand Jungkook.
But understanding, adjusting, listening, and living as a wife who just hears her husband complain, rant and vent, as a wife who just takes care of her kids, worry about them, and guiding them seemed to have a price too.
She gave up her life as a surgeon, the life she worked so hard to be. She gave up her youth to take care of her family. She gave up a lot of things just to keep this family together.
Sacrificing so many things and yet she never asked for more. Which is probably why, she's also giving up her life.
"I got the results from Namjoon-sunbae," she said, breaking the silence.
Jungkook's eyes were closed, relaxing to the wind. She knew he was listening to her, and she knew it started to scare him.
"Seems like a year or 2 would be enough time, won't it?" she asks.
Jungkook's eyes open and he looked at her, "What are you talking about?"
The tears started to well up on Chaeyoung's eyes. He continuously forgets that she's been having a hard time breathing lately, and she's been having chest pains.
He always forgets.
"You always forget, my husband," she chuckles, a sad one.
"I'm sorry, I have a lot of things in my mind," he answers, looking down.
A tear fell out of its place and Chaeyoung just sighed, "You've had a lot of things in your mind for the past years and yet there's no room for your family? Is that it, Jungkook?"
"Chae...it's not like that at all...you know how my job goes..."
"And I always understand," Chaeyoung says and puts her hand on top of his. "For better or for worse, right?"
His heart clenched. There's something wrong. Like this moment makes the both of them drift apart from each other. This day was supposed to be relaxing and calm, but it turned out to be guilt and regret.
"I can't take the treatment, Jungkook..." she says.
His eyes widened. Should he feel angry about it? Sorry? Sad? Why won't she take the treatment? Is she crazy? Has she gone mad?
He sees Chaeyoung's tears fall on her cheek. And he suddenly understands.
"If there's anything you'd like to tell me, my love, you can say it," he tells her.
"Bring the 2 back at home," she says. "Take a vacation with them, go to the beach, ride rollercoasters at amusement parks, watch movies, go to concerts."
He didn't understand what she was saying.
She cupped his cheek, "Fill the void in their memories. Especially her, Jungkook."
The memory of Chaeyoung telling him to bring Jiyoon home and get their family fixed builds another building of guilt in Jungkook. He was getting old and tired of waiting for Jiyoon to return to Korea.
He was seated on a chair, facing to his doctor's table. He decided to get a second opinion with another doctor, since Namjoon gave him a result that he didn't want to hear.
He was starting to loose his mind with all the waiting. He still needed to go to the office and sign some paperwork, attend meetings, visit Junghan.
His doctor sat on his chair and looked at Jungkook with sad eyes. Jungkook just didn't want to hear the what the doctor had to say. Because he probably knew that what Doctor Son found in his results were also the same thing Namjoon saw.
"I'm sorry, sir Jeon," Doctor Son said. "But Professor Kim seems to have examined your results correctly."
Jungkook sighed in disappointment, "I knew he did, I just wanted to hear something different. Elaborate the findings."
"Well, you see...there's been a tearing in your heart's lining and which also led to a tumor. It's called Pericardial Mesotheliomia, a very rare type of asbestos cancer," he said.
"How long will I live?"
"Without the surgery and therapy, about a year. Before assessing for therapy, we still need to take a biopsy of the tumor. Unless, you wouldn't like to take the surgery."
Jungkook shook his head, "Don't worry, doc, I'll take the surgery. I'll be travelling for a week, is it alright to do so?"
Doctor Son nodded, "It's alright, I'll have pain relievers prescribed if any case it'll pain you. I'll also have a surgery scheduled after your travel, if that's alright with you?"
Jungkook stood up from his chair and placed a card on Doctor Son's table, "That'll be fine. Call my secretary for the details. Thank you, Doctor Son."
He didn't know how to feel about the news. Second opinions always are the believable ones. And his second opinion was Namjoon's findings.
The world's ways are really mysterious. The way it tells you bad news or gives you good news are really the peculiar ones. Why can't the universe just say it directly? Instead of making you have a slow and painful death?
Jungkook called his secretary, telling Rachel that he'll be taking a today and the next 7 days out of work. He asked her to book him a flight to Boston for tomorrow morning, and a hotel to stay.
This is it. He said to himself. He'll go to Jiyoon instead of him waiting for her to come home. He'll fix the broken pieces that Chaeyoung can't. He'll fulfil her wishes before his time runs up.
The day passed by, and Jungkook spent it in the house. Sitting by the balcony with the view of the garden Chaeyoung made years ago. The weather is starting to get colder as the days pass by, and the leaves are falling, making him realise that the autumn season has approached.
He asked Rachel to call Junghan to come home for a dinner. Junghan wanted to be a doctor instead of a businessman, and like what Chaeyoung said, he allowed him to go to the field of medicine.
Junghan has been awake for days and nights, not remembering how long his last nap took. He takes a short nap in the resident's quarters then quickly goes to work. Junghan last visited his apartment about a month ago, probably forgetting to pay electric and water bills.
When Rachel called him up, it was a perfect timing. He had 2 days off and his father called for him for a dinner. It felt special because his father was the one who asked him to go home rather than him surprising his father that he's home.
When night time came, Junghan drove all the way to his family's house. He wasn't going to stay there overnight since he had a double shift the next day and he has to get up early.
He entered the house, his father was already seated in the dining room. Usually, Junghan comes in 5 minutes late and Jungkook would be eating ahead because of Jungkook's promptness. But Jungkook silently waited, no food was touched, no drink was poured.
Junghan felt there was something special happening. And he wanted it to be his noona coming home.
"Appa," he entered and sat on the chair.
"I heard from your nanny that these are your favourite food?" Jungkook pointed at the food on the table. "Good thing you mom lists down her ingredients."
Junghan smiled, "Thanks, dad."
"Eat up."
They ate in silence.
Until Junghan realised there was something fishy going on. His father wasn't usually like this, but why did he suddenly call for him for a dinner? Junghan knows that his father is still upset about not taking business school.
He wanted to ask but he doesn't want to ruin the moment they both shared. It's not the tense and heated atmosphere, it's like the atmosphere around his father was similar to the one of his mother.
An atmosphere of calmness and comfort.
Junghan still wonders why his father calls him suddenly. He had his thesis papers and research on going, so in day offs, it really is just about his school requirements rather than resting and catching on with sleep.
"I'm going to visit your noona, that's why I called you," his father answered, as if hearing his thoughts.
Junghan smiles, "That's great, Appa!"
But Junghan still is suspicious. He knows there's something more.
Jungkook placed a piece of meat on Junghan's plate and smiled. He's always had a soft spot for his son, and now that he looks like Chaeyoung. Wearing the doctor's coat, having the tired face but still has the energy to do work.
It all makes Jungkook sad but it makes him happy too.
He doesn't understand.
"How's your med school?" Jungkook asks. "I hope you're eating well. Are you taking vitamin supplements? Water? Do you have breaks?"
Junghan wanted to believe that tonight was just about happy things. Nothing is going to ruin the atmosphere tonight. He wanted it perfect. And he can't wait to share this atmosphere with his noona.
Junghan takes a sip of water, "I've been living in the hospital, actually. I do eat well but it's more of a snack rather than a meal. Of course, I take supplements, and of course, there are breaks."
"Your mother has also been like that at some point," Jungkook chuckles at the memory. "Make sure you come home and take a nice bath once in a while. Or at least find yourself a decent girl to date."
The topics Jungkook say were not like Jungkook at all. Junghan was very curious as to why his father just started to talk like this. But he was also relieve that it sounded more father-like rather than the father-businessman.
They talk more about random things.
Mostly about Junghan's first time in the surgery room. Where the students had virtual training for surgeries, practiced in stitching and sutures, also assisting in the emergency room.
Junghan talked about his research, explaining the details and how it might help the medical world. Telling Jungkook that he was able to read his mother's research, and wanted to prove the research more than what his mother already did.
And with all that talking, Junghan had already the confidence to ask his father why he suddenly sounded like a dad. Why he suddenly sounded so concerned and interested about his medical school.
"I'm sick," Jungkook beat him to it.
And the atmosphere is now full of sadness.
It all turned blue.
From a moment, it was just all happiness. How could happiness be gone after a short 30 minute talk?
Why does happiness hate their family so much?
"A year is all I have," Jungkook makes a small chuckle to his words.
"Appa..." was all Junghan could say.
Junghan shook his head, "Is this why you're visiting noona? To tell her to come home and take your place in the company? Is the company all you care about? How do you think noona will feel about this?!"
"Jiyoon...she's very capable of herself. She knows she can do something and she can be good at it," Jungkook says and smiles at the memory of Jiyoon. "But when it comes to being a human, she's not so good at it at all."
"Where are you going at this, Appa?"
"As much as I want the company to be run by our family, I won't force her to do it. I've already ruined her life, how much more by giving this company to her? I want her to come back, for a year, just a year and I want her to spend the last year of my life with us here."
Junghan started to tear up.
He's definitely feeling the loneliness.
He's only 24, why is his parents leaving in such an early time of his life? Don't they want to see their grandkids? To see a real surgeon and a businesswoman?
"Surgery may allow me to live longer," Jungkook tells him. "But it's a slim chance. There's always a 50-50 chance."
"Why does it sound like you're accepting death? It's too early, dad!"
"In an hourglass, does the sand run forever?"
"Unless you keep turning it but no. It lasts for either a minute or an hour."
"In a year, do seasons lasts for more than 3 months?"
"No, unless there's climate change."
Jungkook chuckles and Junghan looks up to him.
Jungkook gives a soft smile to his son, "When the sand has reached its final second, when the seasons change, there's always a turning point."
Junghan looked confused.
"If your mother calls for me to be with her, then I should take her hand and rest with her," Jungkook says.
It made Junghan cry, his heart broke and he just wanted time to return. He wants to turn back the time and redo all the memories. He wants to turn the sad ones into happy memories.
Junghan had an idea in his mind.
He will call his noona if next week, and he'll ask her to go home. He'll tell her about their father's condition if she doesn't know. He'll beg her to go home.
And he will list down all the things they could do for the year. He'll book flights ahead, buy tours and will ask his med school teachers if he could take his school year for the next year.
"There's still time, right? We can go skiing, the 3 of us. Noona loves skiing, I love skiing! We can go to New Zealand and ride at that gondola ride and eat dinner there. Or go to Europe, see the Northern Lights. We can go to Africa, see the safari and help some children. Or watch a theatre in New York. Ride the Chunnel from London to Paris," Junghan says.
Jungkook smiles.
Chaeyoung was right. If he only made himself a chance to tell them to do those kinds of things, his children will really be up for it. They would go out of their way.
"You still have med school, son."
"Who cares! I'll take it again for next year! I'll delay myself a year. It's just a year anyway!"
Junghan's phone rings. He was needed at the hospital, an emergency came up.
But before he left, Jungkook wanted to tell him one more thing.
"Jeon Junghan," Jungkook says. "Make a promise for me and your mom."
"What is it?"
"If Jiyoon needs you, be there, if you need her, go to her. Never get separated, both of you."
Junghan chuckles, "Me and noona? I'll love that crazy sister for the longest time! I'll see you next week, dad! Emergencies are always urgent!"
"Take care," Jungkook says.
The next day, Jungkook leaves home early.
He flies the 13 hour flight, hoping to see Jiyoon. He hopes it'll be easier to talk to her, he hopes he can ease the pain that he's done.
And just like a second, he was already in Boston.
He came to his penthouse, with his escorts and security. He rested for about 30 minutes and decided to go check Lisa's apartment.
Chaeyoung used to tell him that Jiyoon would often stay at Lisa's during school breaks. And he recently heard from Rachel that she's working in a restaurant-cafe that is owned by her friend.
When he arrived at Lisa's apartment, Lisa allowed him inside and showed him around. Jiyoon wasn't there, but he told Lisa why he was in America.
Lisa also wanted the same for the family. To see them be happy together. She tells Jungkook that Jiyoon moved out of her apartment a few years ago and stays with her friends.
Jiyoon's apartment was above the restaurant-cafe and she has been missing on her rent. She and her friend rents the whole place, including the restaurant-cafe. Business doesn't always workout, and sometimes there's just too many competitors for restaurants or cafes.
She's been out of money, and she would feel embarrassed to ask money from her Aunty Lisa. Whenever Lisa visits her, she dresses up with the clothes she got from home. They were old but she makes them look newer.
Another day for Jiyoon, and she's been itching to work. 5 years since she's left home and 5 years she's been having home sickness.
She spots a family photo, from when their whole family went on a trip to France. Junghan was probably just 5 and she was 10 years old or maybe 11. She sighs and gets up from her bed.
There was a banging on her door, probably the landlady who owns the apartment. Asking for the pay of the rent. They try to pay the landlady, but business is just not going well with Jiyoon and her friend.
She pretends to not hear the banging of the landlady, like what she always does. It's her way of forgetting the failures she's become. She used to be a top student in Harvard, a daughter of a rich man and amazing doctor but look where is now.
A failure.
Maybe that's why dad doesn't come. She thinks and then brushes it off her head.
She grabs her phone and sees a billion of messages from her brother. It's early in the morning, and Jiyoon thinks she was seeing the wrong things from the messages of Junghan.
She will never believe that Jungkook went to Boston to see her. That's the biggest lie anyone could tell her.
Her father? To see his failed daughter? She laughs and tells Junghan that it's a really funny joke that he should save it for April Fool's.
It's night time in Seoul, so Jiyoon doesn't expect a quick reply. She gets up from her bed and still tries to block off the banging noise the landlady makes.
Her friend, Suzanne, is probably sleeping over with her boyfriend to escape the noise. Jiyoon has never been asked out by the guy she likes, so she doesn't have a place to escape from the landlady.
When she finished her shower, and putting on some clothes, the landlady just stops banging. All of a sudden, she just stops.
"Whatever!" she hears from outside.
Jiyoon lifted her brow and shrugged it off. Maybe the landlady gave up because no one's answering?
After the landlady left, she blow dried her hair, placed some make up and tied her hair into a ponytail. Then her phone vibrates on her dresser.
From Junghan again. Telling her it was real. Their father is going to see her.
She scoffs at this and tells Junghan he's starting to get crazy with med school.
After laughing at Junghan, she hears a soft knock on their door. Strange because no one ever knocks nicely at the apartment she and her friend rents.
Probably a friend from college or her Aunt Lisa coming by to visit her.
Jiyoon rushes to the door as the knocks started to become persistent soft knocks. And she keeps wondering who it is. No one comes by without notice.
No one visits their apartment unless there's a text or a scheduled movie date with friends.
Before opening the door, she gets a text message from the landlady. Saying that all of the rent until the next year has been paid. She gets shocked. Probably Suzanne finally grabbed some money off her boyfriend and used it to pay.
But that doesn't sound like Suzanne.
The soft persistent knocks came again and she opens the door, cursing at Suzanne that they should get a peep-hole. But then again, they don't even have money to pay the rent so how could they get a peep-hole? But who paid for the rent?
And it's been paid until the next year!
She opens the door, while texting Suzanne about it. She didn't meet the persons eyes immediately. But she saw a pair of Hermes shoes that she wanted to buy Junghan, apparently had no money so she just sent him a birthday greeting.
She closes her phone and looks at the person. Then she drops her phone.
That's gonna cost her another 100 dollars for repair. And her phone was new! From a second hand store.
"Appa...?" she asked.
Junghan didn't lie after all.
He told her that their father will be there to meet her but she just shrugged it off.
"2500 dollars off rent? That's pretty expensive, don't you think?" Jungkook smiles at her.
She stood there, frozen. Her eyes must be deceiving her. Her father wouldn't fly all the way from Seoul to just see her. That's insane. The most insane thing he's ever done since her middle school graduation.
Instead of standing there in front of her, Jungkook pulls her for a hug. And somehow, it brought Jiyoon to a calm place, a place where she will never be harmed. A hug that she's been longing for.
Jungkook breaks their hug and softly pinches Jiyoon's cheeks, "So, won't you invite your guest?"
Jiyoon nodded and showed him inside.
The small apartment actually bothers Jungkook. He's never stayed in a house or hotel that's smaller than his office at work. And it embarrasses Jiyoon that the very high achieving daughter he has lives in a very cheap place.
"I paid your rent, and looked around at that restaurant-cafe that Lisa told me about," Jungkook says and looks at her. "I guess you've been working hard."
"You paid my rent? Aunty Lisa told you where I am? I didn't even ask you to do that! I'm not charity, dad. Get your money back from the landlady. I'll pay it myself!" she says, sitting down on the couch.
"I thought it would've been a kind gesture."
"Keep thinking. Everything you'll do will never be a kind gesture."
Jungkook stands in front of her, hoping that she would look at him in the eye. He wants to say sorry but the timing never seemed right.
If he says sorry now, she would probably say that he's joking. If he says sorry tomorrow, she'll never believe. And if he keeps on saying sorry, the more she'll just brush him off. Until there will never be a time they'll both reconcile.
"I heard you've been living here for a couple of years, opened a business with your friends and did the hard work," he said. "I'm proud of you."
Jiyoon looked at him.
"I'm proud you took that step. The first step is always the scary one, but you did it," he says.
"And now you think I'm a failure because I can't pay my rent and there are no customers in the stupid business," she says.
"Well, all companies go through that face. Nothing ever starts easy, you know."
Jiyoon scoffed, "So you're giving me advice? Where was that for the last 19 years of my life?"
Jungkook tried to sit down on the couch but Jiyoon tells him to stay standing up. So he stood up, trying to figure out what he'll say to her. And she was trying to think of a way to get out of the uncomfortable atmosphere.
"Do you have work? Maybe you can let your friend fill you in for the next few days," he says.
"Why?" she asked, sassily.
"I'd like to go around Boston, and probably go to New York with you."
She chuckled, sarcastically, "With me? Why didn't you go bring Junghan to do that with you?"
"Jiyoon, please, I'm trying to reconcile."
Jiyoon stands up, "Well maybe, you should've done that years ago!"
She walks in her room and slams it. Her back was leaning on the door, slowly pushing her down on the floor. She was crying of happiness. She's finally getting what she wants. What she needed for a long time.
And even if she wanted to act like she can handle herself, she's just gonna lie to herself more. Her heart and mind tells her to reconcile with her father. She knows it's right to do so but she also doesn't want to lower her pride.
When she thinks of it, it isn't her lowering her pride. Her father came here himself and lowered his pride to ask her for a father-daughter day.
She exhales and calms down then she opens the door.
Jungkook was still standing there, down the hallway.
"Fine. But if you're going to insult me or even try to make me cry, I will leave and I'll make sure our ties are cut," she says.
Jungkook smiles, "Alright. Let's start with you getting your things packed? I'd like you to stay with me in the penthouse. It's only for a week."
"Fine," she rolled her eyes and enters back in her room.
30 minutes later, Jiyoon comes out with a small luggage and walks to her father. She walks ahead of him and he goes out of the apartment, closes the door and follows behind her.
Both of them enter the car that the Jeon security department goes around when Jungkook is overseas. And there was a silent moment between them.
As far as he can remember, Jiyoon was like her mom. Always hungry for food. So Jungkook wanted them to eat first before settling in the penthouse.
"Copley Place, please," he said to the driver.
And in an hour they were there. Jiyoon just followed her father's lead. Not knowing or caring where both of them would be going.
Copley Place is just the place he'd be going to. The mall that smells good because of the expensive products being sold. The rich people entering the mall with fancy dresses. It totally sounds like her father.
When Jungkook stopped, Jiyoon hit her head at his back. They were eating in a small cafe.
"Food? Or let's go shopping first?" he asks her.
"I don't know and I don't care," she answers.
He wraps his arm around her shoulder and rubs his hand on her shoulder.
"I guess we can cook or order a take out later in the penthouse, right?" he smiles. "Louis Vuitton? Hermes? Gucci? What's your pick?"
"I said I was not charity."
"And I never said you were. I've missed out 19 years of your life, that means 19 birthday presents, Christmas presents, middle school graduation, high school graduation, and your college graduation. I owe you about 41 gifts. Hmm, but you passed 7 Ivy-league schools, that makes it 48," he says.
"Stop trying to act like you're making up for the last 19 years," she says but walks inside a store.
Jungkook laughs at her. Indeed, like Chaeyoung. Is angry but when she's given the opportunity to shop, she'll do it til she dropped.
The whole time they were shopping, luxury or not, Jungkook just followed her around. Helping Jiyoon with the bags, giving Jiyoon some more products to buy or asking Jiyoon if she'd like to enter another store. And when Jiyoon would be finished picking out things she likes, all Jungkook does it present his card and pay.
He never bought anything for himself, he just watched her shop. It's more than 48 things now, but he still doesn't care. His daughter's happiness was what he cared for.
When closing time came, Jiyoon finally felt exhausted. So did their bodyguards, carrying all the items her dad bought.
They enter inside the penthouse Jungkook is staying, and Jiyoon never thought she could live a rich life again. She looked at the living room, where the bodyguards placed her things and checked if each one is alright.
She hasn't shopped like this since ages.
Jungkook stands by the counter and makes tea. Seeing her smile makes him smile too.
He thinks that shopping was always a thing in their family. When Jiyoon was a kid, both of them would shop together until Chaeyoung would pull them both out of the store. Junghan was more like Chaeyoung although he shops more on toys and gadgets which would also drive Chaeyoung crazy.
"Why are you doing this?" Jiyoon asks, sitting on the counter chair. "Are you pitying me?"
He places a cup of tea in front of her and cooks food.
"I don't pity you because you live in a small house or own a business that never worked out well," he said. "I'm doing this because I really do want to say sorry."
"You've got to be kidding. You're doing this because you don't want me know the real reason."
Jungkook pauses.
He wants her to know but he also doesn't want her to know the real reason. Truths always hurt. But they are truths. They're the reality that hurts and you've got face the reality.
"It's our first day talking to each other more like a father and daughter since 19 years, and maybe there is another reason why I'm doing this but I'd like to tell it to you when you've finally forgiven me."
"Then if I say: 'I finally forgive you' now, you still wouldn't say it, right?"
"Because I know you haven't forgiven me fully."
She scoffed, "That's just pretty lame."
"Then if I said, the company needs a new person to own it, would you believe it?"
"Of course not, I know you'd like Junghan to do it."
"Then I guess, you haven't forgiven me," Jungkook says and gives her the food he cooked. "It's the same food I cooked you when you came into my room hungry. I hope I still have the cooking skills."
Jungkook leaves without Jiyoon noticing. She ate the food he cooked for her, like a hungry pig. It was delicious and it made her not want to diet ever again. She could eat it again and again and still wouldn't get sick of it.
The next day, Jiyoon wakes up earlier and makes breakfast. In return of the dinner her father cooked. She cooked the food that was available. Bread, coffee, bacon, eggs. The regular continental food.
Her father goes out of his room, and smiles at the breakfast. It's been a while since he's had a hearty meal. And maybe he can have a meal with his 2 kids.
"Thank you for cooking, Jiyoon," he says.
She breathes before saying the next word.
She's thought about it the whole night.
Maybe hating on her dad would be the biggest regret in her whole life. Besides, he's work hard so that she and Junghan could have an amazing life.
One day with her dad just following her around stores and shops, made think about why she really needs to hate him.
Like what her mom used to say, love doesn't always have to be seen physically. Love can work in shadows too.
"Appa!" she accidentally shouted.
With her shout, she also scared Jungkook.
"Am I across the Pacific, Jiyoon?" Jungkook laughs. "I'm right here, you can even whisper it."
She lowered her head, "I'm sorry for saying that I don't want to see your face again or for hating you or for not even trying to understand you the way mom did. I'm sorry."
He pulled her for a hug, "Want to know the truth?"
He felt her nod in the hug.
"I wanted you to go home, but if I did allow you to live a life of praises and perfection, don't you think that wouldn't have built the strong person you are today? I'm constantly worried about you, and I always love you. You and Junghan are always special to me, never forget that and never doubt that," he says to her.
They both reconciled.
And that day, they spent it in the penthouse. Playing VR games and doing exercises together. They also went out to see Boston Harbor and took a nice dinner outside.
The next day, Jungkook got a call from Rachel. Surgery would be prepared once he gets home, and is best if he gets home earlier than expected. He agrees to her and decides to tell Jiyoon about his sickness.
It's too early to tell her and Jiyoon still wanted to go to New York to watch Matilda in the theatres.
But he had no choice.
Jiyoon was out with her friends the whole day since one of her friends was about to get married. She also packed out some things out of her apartment with Suzanne because Jungkook wanted her to live in the penthouse rather than that small apartment.
She started to like the life.
She also told Jungkook about her funny moments and memories in Harvard, also telling him how her life has been. How this guy friend of hers doesn't like her despite her having a huge crush on him.
She admits the most embarrassing things that's happened to her over a meal or when they go out to bond.
When Jiyoon comes home, she brings some chicken and pizza. The bodyguards were supposed to bring it up with her but she took care of it. Jiyoon fixes the food for dinner, hoping to tell her father what happened when she was out with her friends.
Like what she wanted, she told Jungkook how one of her guy friends proposed to her friend named Lily. Told him how romantic their love story was and how she also wanted to have one.
"You're a hopeless romantic, just like your mother. Even Junghan has inherited it," Jungkook says.
"I'm not! I just don't like making the first move! If he likes me then he should be man enough to tell me!"
"But he doesn't like you, Jiyoon, he has a girlfriend. Find another man."
"It's hard to find a guy who is exactly my type."
Jungkook sighs, "Girls will be girls, after all."
"Dad, don't act like I don't know your story with mom. It's like a rom-com with some action," she said and started to act. "There he was, about to tell her he loves her but no, her ex comes back and she loves him more!"
Jungkook flicked his daughter's forehead.
"Ow!"
"That was different. Because your mom and I were in love," Jungkook tells her.
"Well, yeah, you were but I..." Jiyoon paused before saying the next thing. "Okay, fine. He's not in love with me. Who cares? I'll probably find some guy in Korea, right? Or will you arrange marriage me for the sake of the company and I will fall in love with that guy!"
Jungkook chuckles, "Business marriages are common for the businessmen who wants to own Jeon Foundations. If you'd like one, I'm sure there are tons of sons of businessmen who'd like you. But if you marry someone you don't love, then I don't think I'd like you to do it."
"Very funny, dad. Sounds so wise and mighty. But anyway! Arranged marriage? Sure, why not. Sign me up for that because, like you said, I'm a hopeless romantic."
"Arranged marriage? Jeon Ji Yoon, you know I can only do that with Korean families."
"Uh-huh!" she nodded and smiled.
"Are you going back to Korea?"
"Well, Junghan pulled some strings. But yeah! I'm half-excited and half-scared but all-in-all fine."
Jungkook was taken aback.
"Why, dad? There something you need to tell me?" she asks.
"A couple of things, but I also don't want to pressure you," he answers.
"Come on, dad. Don't try to hide it. I know there's something you've been meaning to tell me but you keep delaying it. I hear you at night, you cry for help and I've seen you drink pain relievers. Tell me before I jump into different conclusions!" she demanded.
Jungkook gives her a soft smile, "Take over the company, Jiyoon."
"What?"
"Junghan is not studying business, I allowed him to study medicine. He says you wanted the company more than he does."
"Dad, where is this coming all of a sudden? You're alive and well, you can still manage the company for another 10 years."
"I'm only going to be around for a year..." Jiyoon doesn't want to believe what she's hearing. "I'm sick."
Jiyoon connects the dots, "Is that why Junghan has been asking me where do I want to go? Or what I want to do if I come home?"
"If a year is all I have left, then I'd rather spend the time with the both of you."
Silence filled the air.
Jungkook puts a hand on her shoulder, "I don't want to force it unto you. If you don't want to come home for the company or even spend time with us there, I don't want to force you."
Jiyoon apparently cries.
They reconcile and now he only has a year left? Why does the world hate her? Why does happiness never go their way?
"Whatever decision you make, I'm going to support it. Your happiness comes first before the company."
Jiyoon stands in front of the tombstone. It's September 1, and she came to the cemetery to light a candle for her father.
She shed a tear, without realising it. She starts to sing 'Happy Birthday' and clapping along.
"Happy birthday, Appa," she says.
She took over the company, 3 days after she got home. She was named CEO and President, then started her work immediately. After that, she spent time with her father and brother. They eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together.
They spend time watching movies and reading books, going to church or going to parks.
But after 2 weeks of doing fun things together, Jungkook died while on surgery. It was a slim chance for him.
And like what he said, when Chaeyoung calls for him, he'll go with. her.
The pregnant Jiyoon placed flowers on top of her father and mother's grave and left with her husband helping her inside the car.
