Chapter One
Mason's POV:
I take one last look and see the house I previously lived in was now empty. The boxes that had all of our things, all the memories we cherished together, were packed and already shipped to California. All we simply had to do was bring the last of our remaining things in a plane.
I feel a pat on the back.
I turn, seeing my mom give a sincere smile. "Don't worry, you'll like California better." She says.
"Mason come on! We're gonna be late for our flight!" David calls out with his head sticking out the window, making me roll my eyes.
That's my older brother David, who's twenty-one years old. I consider him to be more responsible out of my whole family since he's overprotective. I guess you could say he's like a dad.
I walk to the rental van that was parked on the side and the driver helped shove my suitcases in the trunk. I open the door and sat down next to Oliver.
"So Mason, how much do you think our lives our going to change when we go to California?" He asked but I shrug my shoulders.
Oliver is the complete opposite of David. He's comedic, outgoing, and sometimes not the brightest for a nineteen year old.
"I just hope our neighbors aren't mean since our previous ones were." Rachel joins in with a look of annoyance.
Rachel is my younger sister but practically acts like she's the oldest which is weird since she's only fourteen. I would say her personality is somewhat similar to Oliver except she can sometimes have her serious moments like David.
"There was no one my age." Victoria pouted.
Victoria was the baby of the family, despite the fact she's only eleven. However, she still has her moments where she can get away with anything and blame it on us.
"Mr. Howard threw lemons at me when I would walk you guys to school by his street." David said. Oliver, Rachel, and my mom started laughing but I stayed quiet.
I finished my freshman year in high school and it wasn't really the best. In the beginning it was okay but then the friends from middle school drifted and now we barely speak to each other. So having to switch schools didn't affect me that much.
"What are your goals when we get to California?" My mom asked us.
"Be more trustworthy with others I guess." Rachel replied.
"Go on more walks in the morning." David shrugged.
"Meeting someone who loves playing Zelda. None of my friends from my school liked it or had no idea what that was." Victoria pouted.
"I guess explore more than what I used to before.." Oliver said.
"How about you Mason?" My mom asked and I thought about it.
"To meet someone who understands me." I say and everyone smiled.
"I like that goal." David says and I nod as a sign for thanking him.
We arrived at the airport shortly and my mom checked in for us while David, Oliver, and I helped load our luggage onto the drop off.
We rolled our carry ones to our terminal and handed the man our plane tickets. We walked further inside the plane with Victoria excitedly running ahead of us, I walk over to my seat that was near the window with Oliver getting the middle seat and David getting the aisle seat.
My mom sat in between Rachel and Victoria in the row next to us and David helped my mom with their carry on luggage by placing them in the overhead compartment.
Once everyone was in their seats, the flight attendants explained all the procedures just in case there was an emergency. I eventually tuned them out since I knew cases like these would barely happen.
I didn't notice how long I was in my zone because next thing I knew, I felt the plane start to move as it was preparing to take off. I look out the window to get one last view of Detroit.
"Nice knowing you Detroit." I whisper and put my earbuds on. I play one of my Spotify playlists and knew I was bound to fall asleep soon.
Oliver's POV:
I would say our family was excited for California, but I knew Mason wasn't. He hasn't been the same ever since our parents announced their divorce.
Hopefully living in Sacramento will change how Mason acts. I mean, our house is bigger which means instead of rooming with David and Mason, I get a room to myself!
"Do you think Mason will like California?" I whisper to David so Mason wouldn't hear since he was asleep.
"I don't even know....I hope he does." He trails and we both turn to Mason. He was laying against the window sleeping peacefully.
"Well I'll like it for sure. We need a fresh new start after that whole, you know."
"Right. Well I'm going to sleep, it's a long flight." David says as he closed his eyes. I chuckled and looked at the girls. Rachel was on her phone watching a movie, Victoria was sleeping, and Mom was reading a magazine.
Things are going to be different.
Lauren's POV:
I woke up by someone yanking the blankets off of my body, but rub my eyes sleepily instead of grabbing the blanket back. As I blink to let my vision focus, a face hovered over mine and I realized it was Dani who had a smirk plastered on her face.
"Why would you wake me up this early?" I groan in annoyance.
"Well for two things. One, mom told me to wake you up since breakfast is ready." Once she said the word breakfast, my stomach rumbled which indicated that I was hungry. "And two, we're going to have new neighbors!" Dani grins.
"And why does the second part involve me?" I asked still confused.
"Katherine wants to bake something nice for the family and wants all of us to go meet them." She said. I groaned and cover my face with the pillow, attempting to go back to sleep.
"Come on you have to get dressed so you don't look like a hobo in front of the neighbors." Dani said taking the pillow off of me.
"But you know I'm shy when it comes to meeting new people." I whine and she rolled her eyes.
"It won't be that bad Laur now get up or I'll eat your breakfast" She said and I reluctantly stand up.
"Ugh fine I'll be down in five minutes" I yawn, trying to stretch my arms as Dani left the room. I grab the blankets from the floor, placing it over my bed as best as possible and walk downstairs to see my family in the middle of eating their breakfast.
Katherine was placing cookies and muffins in two baskets to separate them with a look of glee as she saw how perfect it was.
Lisa looked up from her phone and chuckled at my sleepy state.
"Looks like someone finally decided to wake up."
"Good morning Lauren." My mom greeted as she handed me my plate.
"So I was thinking that we all take the snacks I made for the new family moving in as a "Welcome to the neighborhood" type of thing." Katherine suggested, gesturing to her baskets and the ones placed on the side that still needed to be fixed. "I can lie and say we all worked together."
"We tried to help but you didn't let any of us pitch in." Amy said as she finished up her food.
"Not my fault. Remember what happened last time? I got help from you all and somehow the cookies ended up getting burned." Katherine raised her eyebrows.
"No wonder the neighbor's kid avoided us." Christian scoffed.
"Do you think the kids moving in this time will be mean?" Joey asked with a worried expression.
"No they won't. There's three boys and two girls. One's Lisa's age, Amy's age, Lauren's age, Dani's age, and Christian's age." Mom said.
"She better like Zelda or we won't get along." Nick says, making some of my sisters laugh.
I put my plate in the sink and walked to my room to get dressed.
