Chapter Five

Mason's POV:

"Ooh," I quickly turn away from my mirror to see Rachel leaning against the door frame of my room. "are you getting ready to see Lauren?"

"Maybe," I mutter, grabbing my shoes by the bed. "but I'm not sure if I should go."

"How come?" She crosses her arms.

"It's about her boyfriend--"

"I'm gonna stop you there." She cuts me off, holding her hand up. "Is this conversation going to lead to where you don't want her boyfriend to see you as a threat?"

"No..." I trail but she gives me pointed look. "Okay at first it was, but then my opinion changed after what happened at the football game."

"What happened at the game?"

"Remember when I was getting snacks for Lauren?" I ask and she simply nods in response. "After I bought the snacks, I heard this like...thump against the shack. I got curious and went to check it out then saw Parker kissing some cheerleader from the opposite team." I explain which causes her eyes to widen in shock.

"You're kidding." She shakes her head in disbelief. "Did you at least record it to show her proof?"

I lift up my phone. "I did, but I don't know if I should show her."

"Why not? Mason, you can't keep something like that as a secret. Lauren deserves to know the truth." She says as she walks over to sit on the bed next to me. "Have you told anyone else? Diana? David? Oliver?"

I shake my head. "Just you." I put my phone away in my pocket. "Only reason I'm hesitant about telling her is because I don't want to see her hurt. She's a good person, she doesn't deserve to get her heart broken."

"I'm telling you now, it's only going to get worse if you don't put a stop to it. Parker is going to think he could get away with it and continue cheating on Lauren for god knows how long." She says then places her hand on my shoulder. "Lauren deserves to know."

"What if she gets mad at me?" I fiddle with my fingers nervously. "She'll be devastated if I tell her."

"If someone told me that my boyfriend was cheating on me with another girl, I'd be thankful they told me before our relationship escalated further." She stands up from her spot and grabs my hands. "So be a man and go over to the Cimorelli household to tell Lauren the truth."

I furrow my eyebrows. "But I'm already a man." I retort as she pulls me up to my feet.

"Well then you need to be a better man." She says, pulling me out of my room and down the stairs.

"I can walk myself there, Rach." I groan, trying to twist my wrists out of her grips but she kept dragging me down the stairs, momentarily gaining attention from David and Oliver who were both playing video games in the living room but then turned back to the TV.

David softly chuckles. "Should I even ask?"

"Nope. It'll give him a chance to stall." Rachel says as she finally lets go of my wrists so she could open the door. "Mason, you're not allowed to come back until you tell her."

I hold up my house keys. "You can't keep me locked out."

In a flash, she snatches it from my hands and throws it in the living room, causing my jaw to drop.

"Now you don't." She shrugs and continues shoving me out the door. "So shoo!" She says before slamming the door shut behind me. A small click goes off on the door, making me shake my head in disbelief.

She really wasn't kidding.

I start to walk over to the Cimorelli household with my nerves slowly starting to increase.

Maybe Rachel was right. Lauren deserves to know what Parker did. It would be ridiculous if she didn't listen to me.

I knock on their front door a couple times and wait until their lock clicks, opening it to reveal Amy.

"Hey!" Amy cheerily greets and opens the door wider. "Come on in."

"Thanks." I step inside as she closes the door behind me.

"Who's at the door Amy?" I hear Mrs. Cimorelli call out from the kitchen.

"It's Mason." She replies and gestures for me to follow her.

She guides me to the kitchen to see Mrs. Cimorelli, Lisa and Dani eating from a bowl of chocolate chip cookies.

Dani turns her head, noticing Amy and I enter. "Hey! I didn't know you were coming over today." She smiles, taking a cookie from the bowl and taking a bite out of it.

"Are you here for Lauren?" Lisa wiggles her eyebrows teasingly as she took a bite of the cookie.

"Uh..." I trail awkwardly, not really knowing how to answer it without it being flirty.

"Lisa." Mrs. Cimorelli scolds then offers the bowl of cookies to me. "She's in her room."

I take one from the bowl with a smile. "Thanks."

As I walk over and go up the stairs, I take a bite of the cookie which causes me to furrow my eyebrows.

It tasted like a regular chocolate chip cookie but it was also something else I couldn't recognize. Whatever.

Once I got closer to Lauren's room, the sound of laughter causes me to stop in my tracks.

Maybe this was a bad idea. She's probably busy with a friend or something. I could probably come over later and-

No. Rachel said I had to tell her the truth today and that's what I'm going to do.

I continue walking to her room and as soon as I'm in front of her room, I freeze at the sight in front of me.

Parker had Lauren pinned to the ground with huge grins on their faces, practically inches away from each other.

The cookie slips from my hand, making a small thump once it hits the floor which causes the pair to turn to my direction.

I suddenly regret coming over.

"Hi Mase." Parker greets, not even moving from his spot.

Lauren clears her throat. "Mason, why didn't you text me that you were coming over?"

I scratch my neck nervously. "I thought we talked about it last night when we dropped you off after the game. Sorry, I just wanted to tell you something but I could come over later or--"

"No, no. Stay." Lauren says and looks up to Parker. "Can I talk to him in private?"

"Yeah sure." Parker says, taking his hands off from her arms and pushing himself up from the ground. "I'm gonna use the restroom and get snacks from downstairs if you don't mind."

"Help yourself." Lauren smiles and Parker bumps my shoulder once he walks passed me.

Jerk.

Lauren sits up from the ground and sits on top of her bed. "So, what did you want to talk about?" She grabs a throw pillow to put it on her lap.

No backing out now. She has to know.

"It's about what happened at the football game." I say, taking a seat next to her on the bed which causes her eyes to widen.

"I knew it. Look, I know Audrey's a pain. I didn't really want to go through with--"

"No, it's not about Audrey." I interrupt. "It's about Parker."

She furrows her eyebrows. "My boyfriend?"

I cringe at the name. "Yeah."

She crosses her arms. "Okay...what did he do?"

"I caught him kissing one of the cheerleaders from the opposite team." I say, forcing myself to not look her in the eyes. "When I went to get your snacks. He was behind the shack when I caught him."

"Wow." Lauren mutters and I hesitantly look up to see her expression filled with disbelief as she stared in front of her. "I'm disappointed."

"I'm sorry he did this to you. I know I should've told you last night but--"

"No. I'm disappointed in you, Mason." She says then looks to me. "I can't believe you would have the audacity to lie to me about this."

Did I explain that wrong?

"Wait what? You're kidding, right?"

"Mason, I finally found someone that makes me happy. Why are you trying to jeopardize that?" She says, her voice slightly starting to raise. "I can't believe you would lie to me."

"Lauren, why would I lie to you about this? He cheated on you with a different girl!" I exclaim. "Why would I do that to you?"

"I don't know, you tell me." She crosses her arms. "I think you wanted to do this as payback for trying to set you up with Audrey."

I roll my eyes. "You're being ridiculous. I don't care about that."

"Whatever. Look, I don't think us being friends is going to work out." She says and my eyes widen. "I think you should leave."

"No, I have proof." I say, trying to pull my phone out of my pocket but she shakes her head.

"I don't want to see it." She dismisses, pushing my hand away. "Please leave. I really don't want to get my older brothers involved. Get out."

"Lauren, please. You have to believe me, he's going to continue doing this to other girls. I don't want you to be manipulated with his lies." I plead, quickly pulling out my phone from my pocket and look for the video.

"Mason, please get out."

"If you could just--"

"I said get out!" She yells, causing me to flinch at the tone. "Mason, please. I don't want to see you anymore."

This is definitely my worst nightmare. It felt like a never-ending dream I couldn't wake up from.

What was worse about it was the horrible amount of pain I felt that was building up from my chest.

"Okay." I softly reply, glancing at my phone where I had the video ready. I shakily press 'send video' to Lauren and shove my phone in my pocket. "I-I'll g-go."

I sit up from the bed but as soon as I take the first step, I felt my breath begin to quicken. My chest was heaving up and down, feeling my throat tighten at the lack of oxygen I couldn't breathe.

Was it getting stuffy in here?

"Mason?" I hear Lauren's voice echo in my head. "Mason."

"I'm going. I'm going." I reply, taking a couple steps forward out of the room.

However, I didn't even make it through the door since I felt my knees buckle to the ground, struggling for my breath which causes my eyes to widen.

"Mason!"
