A Beatley New Year!
"How many minutes till new year's, then?" George asked eagerly, sipping his coffee.
Paul glanced at his phone to check the time. "Five minutes exactly."
"Five minutes? I'll never make it," Dhani groaned, burying his face in George's shoulder. This was his first year staying up on new year's, and so far it had been a big disappointment. At least, how disappointing it could get for a five year old. New year's "party", they'd said. What's a party with no presents or cake?
The Lennons, the McCartneys, the Harrisons, and the Starkeys were huddled in the living room of Crackerbox Palace around the fire, waiting for 2019 to come. The adults were quite wide awake, but the kids weren't too keen on staying up just to see the numbers on the clock change.
"Yeah, well, Jason, Lee, and Sean are already out like a light," said John. "It's not likely that they'll wake up in time."
"I'm sleepy, Daddy," said James, yawning.
Paul lifted him up onto his lap. "We're almost there, okay?"
"Almost there to what?" said an equally tired Stella, who was almost nodding off. "There's no point to this party."
"Well, it's almost the new year!" said Ringo cheerily. "Aren't you excited for 2019?"
"It'll feel just like 2018," Mary answered groggily.
"Don't you kids have a new year's resolution?" said Linda eagerly. She was geared for the new year.
"What's a new year's resolution?" Zak asked.
"Well, it's something that you promise to do for the new year," Olivia explained. "For example, my new year's resolution would be to spend more time with my family."
George smiled and took her hand gently, squeezing it. "Me too, love."
"Can my new year's resolution be... to make no new year's resolutions?" Julian asked with a mischievous grin on his face.
"I suppose so," Olivia said with a beam.
"Oh! We've got one more down here! James just fell asleep," said Paul.
"Who... shall be next?" John said in a "scary" Darth Vader voice. At least, what he thought was scary (it really wasn't).
Yoko rolled her eyes, shoving John's shoulder playfully. "Oh, John."
"What're we down to now, Paulie?" said George.
"Three minutes," Paul replied. "Let's hope that no one drops out now."
"Yeah, c'mon, Dhani, you can do it," George said. "We're almost there."
Dhani didn't say anything- he just made a really muffled sound in response. He looked like he was going to close his eyes any moment now.
"Hey, I have an idea. How about we go 'round and say what each of our new year's resolutions are. Maybe that'll keep everyone awake," Barbara suggested.
"Good idea, Barb," said Ringo. "I'll go first. My new year's resolution is to eat onions for the first time."
"You've never eaten onions before?" said Zak, dumbfounded.
Ringo nodded. "Or pizza."
Everybody around him gasped. "How could you have never eaten pizza before, Rich?" said John in utter shock.
"I told you. I was a pretty sick kid and always stuck to eating baked beans," Ringo said, shrugging.
"My turn next! My new year's resolution is to give peace a chance," John said.
"You had to quote your own song in there, didn't you?" said Paul, shaking his head.
"Yes, yes I did," John said, grinning at him.
"My turn next," said Paul. "My resolution is to... tone down the sass."
George scoffed. "That's one resolution you're never going to be able to keep."
Paul frowned at him. "Right, like you can't keep your own."
"You do realize you were being sassy just then, right?" Linda pointed out.
"Whatever."
"My turn. My resolution, besides being with my family more often-" George said, kissing Olivia on the cheek, "Is to be a better gardener."
"Does that include cleaning snow off your garden gnomes?" John said, laughing.
"Of course it does," George said in an are-you-kidding-me kind of way. Of course cleaning snow off garden gnomes was part of his daily gardening routine.
"Alright, my turn," said Linda. "My resolution is to deal with Paul's sass."
"Hardest thing one has to do," John said with a wide smile.
"Oh, it's sixty seconds until new year's, everybody!" Paul said excitedly.
"Alright!" George said, pumping his fist into the air. "Who's excited?"
"To sleep?" said Julian.
"That too."
"It's the countdown now!" said Paul.
"Ten!"
"Nine!"
"Eight!"
"Seven!"
"Six!"
"Five!"
"Four!"
"Three!"
"Two!"
"One!"
"Happy new year!"
"Hey, we made it!" George said, nudging Dhani's arm.
"Yeah!" Dhani said, smiling at his dad. He had to admit that staying up was worth it.
"It still feels the same," Mary quipped.
"I agree," Stella responded in monotone.
"C'mon you two, don't be spoilsports," Paul said. "It's the new year!"
Mary shrugged. "I guess so. Happy new year, Dad."
"Yeah, happy new year, Dad," Stella chorused.
Paul leaned in to hug his daughters. "I knew you two would come 'round."
"Excited for the new year?" John asked Julian.
"I'm excited to go to sleep," Julian said. "Happy new year anyway, Dad."
"Well, I've got just you to hug, now, since Jason and Lee are already asleep," Ringo said. "Happy new year, Zak."
It was too late. Zak had fallen asleep on the couch.
"Oh well. I've got you to hug," said Ringo, hugging Barbara, who was stifling a laugh.
As everybody hugged one another, their sleep deprivation was forgotten for a few short minutes.
Then, out of the blue, a very familiar song started to play.

"GEORGE!!!"
"Well, I couldn't resist it."
