Love that was never meant to be

3rd person pov

You were busy cooking in the kitchen until you heard the front click open and you smiled when you knew who it was. You stopped whatever you were doing and went to the front door to greet him, who was none other than your beloved man, Mori Ougai.

"Welcome back honey." you said to him and took his bag while he was busy taking off his shoes. " It's good to be back at home. How's your day sweetheart?" " It was great! I learnt a new recipe today, so I'm making it for dinner tonight." you enthusiastically told him. Mori just chuckled at your enthusiasm and kissed your forehead which made you blush in return. " Well I can't wait to taste this new recipe of yours sweetheart." Mori said.

"You won't be disappointed for sure!" you confidently told him.

Timeskip after dinner

Mori was washing the dishes and hummed to himself until he felt a pair of arms wrapped around his waist. He stopped for a moment and smiled. He put the clean plates on the racks and turned around and hugged you back to which you gave him the smile that he loves so much. "Never expected you to be this clingy sweetheart. Did something happen to you today?" Mori asked you. You just chuckled and snuggled your face in his chest and answered "Nothing happened. I just missed you a lot." " Even though we just saw each other this morning before I left for work?" Mori asked amused with your clingy attitude. "Yeah..." you said and blushed before continuing to snuggle in Mori's chest. You really missed him despite living in the same house, you both barely spend time with each other due to work. You could understand Mori's work as a doctor while you were busy working as an Intel agent with the ADA agency. You never told Mori what you work as or who you had worked with, it would be a secret that you will keep for the rest of your life. You then felt curious about something so you tilted your head upwards to look at Mori to which he noticed and looked down to see you looking at him. "Hm? Is there something that you want to ask me about sweetheart?" "Ne~ honey can I know which hospital that you work at? You never told me much about where you work." you curiously asked him. You noticed that his facial expression changed for a bit, and he continued to hug you and didn't reply to your question. You didn't pry any further because he may be uncomfortable telling you where he worked, but as long as he is safe where is working then you're ok with him keeping his secret. "I'm sorry sweetheart. I can't exactly tell you where I work. I hope you understand." He apologized sincerely. "Don't worry about it. I'm sorry that I asked too much" you apologized as well.

You really wished these moments with him would last forever. Being in the presence of your beloved really does change you and you would never complain about it. Then you realized that you forgot to do something. "Oh no! I forgot to send the information about the Yosano kid to Fukuzawa-san!" you internally yelled. You let go of the hug which had made Mori confused. " Honey I forgot to finish the slides presentation for tomorrow's meeting. I have to go do it now or else tomorrow's meeting will be a disaster!" you explained frantically. You were lying and so far Mori has not caught on to it yet. "You better do it quick then sweetheart. If you sleep late again you'll be a mean grouch when morning comes." Mori jokes. "Mou~ so mean! To call your beloved significant other a grouch! Hmpph!" You cutely huffed angrily. " I was just joking with you sweetheart " Mori told you and poked your puffy cheeks. " I know... Welp I'm gonna go then before I become a real grouch soon. Bye!" you said and sped off outside to get to your office. Mori just chuckled at your actions and he sometimes worries that you have to go to your office in the middle of the night for work related stuff. But he was relieved that your office (fake office that is) was just a 20 minute drive from the house, so your safety was assured. Mori then got a phone call and he turned serious when he found out who had called and he answered the call. " I assume that you have already found Yosano-kun's location?" He said to the caller.

End of flashback

Timeskip to where you and Ranpo have to get Yosano away from the building.

You,Ranpo and the president arrived at the building and your mission was to save a girl named Yosano from the Port Mafia boss. When you searched for information on Yosano, you felt sorry that she had to go through all those things during the war. What kind of person would drag an 11 year old kid to a war that is fated to lose? You were a bit scared since you heard from Fukuzawa that the Port Mafia boss is a vicious yet powerful person and the thought of it had made your hands tremble a bit which Fukuzawa had noticed and he patted your shoulder to calm you down. " Calm down (l/n)-san. If the worst case scenario comes, then I will be the one to fight him" Fukuzawa calmly told you. "That's what I'm worried about the most, Fukuzawa-san! I tried to dig some info on the Port Mafia boss but I only found out about his past activities. None of it mentioned his name or anything. If you know something you should tell me right now before things get worse." You told him. Fukuzawa looked at you confused as to which you had done the same as well. " Um... why are you looking at me like that? Did I do something wrong?" you asked. " I thought that you already know the name of the Port Mafia boss. That's why I was shocked to know that you didn't know his name yet." Fukuzawa told you. "Oh... wait does that mean you know his name then?! I may have not noticed his name because I was busy.. preparing something." you sheepishly replied while scratching your head out of embarrassment. " You mentioned you were busy preparing for an event, but let's talk about that after we save Yosano-kun. The Port Mafia's boss is an old friend of mine and you know that we have an alliance because of the Tripartite Pact." Fukuzawa briefly explained to you to which you nodded. You didn't know why, but your heart was telling you to not hear what Fukuzawa was gonna say next, but you brushed off the feeling and continued to listen which made your whole world shatter the moment you heard the name of the Port Mafia's boss name. " If you ever encounter Ougai Mori, make sure to run away. He may look weak but his strength is undeniable." Fukuzawa warned you. "Wh-what?" Those were the only words that you mumbled to yourself in shock.

Fukuzawa was about to ask why you were so shocked upon hearing Mori's name, but he was interrupted by the sound of the helicopter that was at the top of the building. "Speak of the devil. He's here. Ranpo! (l/n)-san!" Fukuzawa called out both of your names. "Yes!" to which you both replied. "I'm going to stall for some time for the both of you to go and save Yosano. Make sure to be careful of the enemies!" Fukuzawa said before rushing inside the building to head off to where Mori was. You were in a daze as you were still processing the information that you had gotten from Fukuzawa just now. "No wonder he didn't want me to know where he worked." you said in disbelief. Ranpo looked at you worriedly as he had never seen you that dejected before. "Are you ok (l/n)? What did Fukuzawa tell you just now?" Ranpo asked. You wanted to deny everything that you had heard or known about. You felt like cursing the world for making you decide on something this hard. As much as you love him, you were known for one thing which was loyalty.

"Ranpo-kun.. can you do me a favor? Can you go and save Yosano-kun on your own? I-I need to clear up something." you asked Ranpo with tears threatening to leave your eyes. Ranpo noticed this and nodded. "Ok then. If anything happens, you know that the ADA will always be on your side (l/n)." Ranpo told you and patted your shoulder before leaving you all alone. You really wanted to cry, but you forced yourself to not cry and immediately headed to the rooftop to where Fukuzawa and Mori were at.

At the rooftop

You were standing at the door that connects between you and the outside of the rooftop. You could distinctly hear the sound of weapons clashing and you definitely heard Mori's voice yelling at Fukuzawa. You felt like wanting to leave the place, but you had no choice with what has happened so far. Even though Mori is your fiancee, you could never agree with the way he has treated Yosano or has gotten his position as the Port Mafia's boss. You took a deep breath and opened the door to see both men still fighting and you were shocked that a scalpel was heading towards you.

(Himiko: How the heck is it so hard to find this scene from the anime?! The internet doesn't want me to show that majestic fight or what?!)

You immediately took out your gun and shot the scalpel to which it had gotten the attention of both men. You made eye contact with your fiance who was shocked to see why you were there holding a gun. Fukuzawa was also shocked to see you there, but he noticed that you had kept your gaze on Mori the whole time. He walked up to you and whispered in your ear. " (L/n)-san what are you doing here? You were supposed to be with Ranpo-kun right now." "I know Fukuzawa-san. I.. need to talk with him alone. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. You just go to where Yosano and Ranpo are right now." you told him with a determined look. Fukuzawa couldn't say anything when you gave him that look and decided to leave you both alone. After Fukuzawa had left you took a deep breath and walk towards Mori and you stopped right in front of him. You were still not looking at him. Guilt, shock, sadness. Those things have made you have mixed feelings on what you were supposed to do right now. You looked up to see your fiance's face who had hundreds of questions running through his mind and you decided to tell him everything.

"Mori-kun.. I'm not an office worker. I'm an Intel agent for the ADA. I have been working for Fukuzawa secretly since... a year ago. I didn't know that you were the Port Mafia's boss until just a few minutes ago." you confessed while trying to hold on to your tears. Mori was shocked and then everything had finally made sense to him. The multiple nights that you had to go to the office to do your work. Those were just lies so that you could give any information to Fukuzawa. Mori just sighed. He knows that he should be mad at you for lying and working under Fukuzawa, his enemy. He knows that you are his enemy as well, but he didn't have the heart to hurt you. Mori loved you too much to notice your mistakes. An idea came over his mind and he wanted to test you. The one thing that had made him fall for you in the first place. "(Y/n), my sweetheart...I don't want to hurt you. Even if I was given the chance, I would never want to hurt in any single form. I'll forgive all of your mistakes, but on one condition. We can still be together if you promise to leave the ADA and join the Port Mafia" Mori told you, trying to tempt you into taking his offer. You hold his hand and gripped it hard and you sadly answered, "I'm sorry Mori-kun. I-I can't betray the ADA. They have been through lots of things and I couldn't possibly betray Fukuzawa-san. I'm sorry." You said and the tears that you have been holding onto just flowed out. You were never the type to cry, but in this situation you were torn whether to choose the ADA or to continue being with your lover. As hard as the decision was, you have chosen the ADA and you tried your best to not waver even if the enemy is none other than your beloved person.

Mori just smiled sadly at you and sighed in relief. To be honest he wants you to join him at the Port Mafia, but then again forcing her to be someone that she isn't, will make her unhappy. He hated to admit it, but he loved the fact that your loyalty never changes no matter what situation that you had to go through and this situation perfectly fits your unbreakable loyalty towards the ADA. Mori kisses your forehead for the last time and whispered in your ear. " You don't have to apologize for anything sweetheart. I'm happy that you didn't lose your identity as a loyal person. Even if we are on different sides, I hope you will be able to move on from me. I'm sorry for wasting your time and energy being with someone as dangerous as me. Goodbye (y/n). Let's hope that we never cross paths ever again." Mori said to you before stepping inside the helicopter. You looked at your former lover to which he did the same and then the helicopter started flying away. You kept your gaze on the flying helicopter until the helicopter was gone from your sight. Tears trickled down your face one more time and you sobbed. "I can never forget about Mori-kun. I love you too much that I'm not willing to move on" you said in between sobs.

Fukuzawa: That's a wrap then. I didn't expect an angst coming up and to create an angst for Mori sensei is.. I don't know what to comment about.

Mori: You're so mean Tachikaze-chan! Why am I the only one who gets a sad ending? I deserve a happy ending as well.

Dazai: About that Himiko-chan asks me to relay a message to you. She's not here today.

Fukuzawa: Why? Did something happen to her?

Dazai: She told me that she couldn't get over the angst for Mori's story and is still crying in her bedroom. So she's not mentally recovered yet. (Sweatdrop)

Mori: But.. she's the writer right?

Dazai: Exactly. She told me that she didn't have any idea on what to write for you so she decided to write angst. Right now she might be regretting that decision. She kept crying when she called me to relay the message.

Mori: Writers can be a bit... eccentric I say. I'll forgive Tachikaze-chan for now. Now what do we do now?

Fukuzawa: You do the closure for this chapter Mori sensei.

Mori: With great pleasure then! We hope that you all love reading this and until then bye👋

Himiko: (comes out of nowhere) Tbh everyone... I already cried when I wrote the drafts for this chapter. That's how badly I cried when this is over.

Most details would definitely be about me so I hope you all can wait. Imma go back and cry again when I reread this story.
