Jack and Hiccup entered the large entry hall hand in hand. If the guardians noticed they didn't comment which was probably a wise decision based on Hiccup's explosive demeanour. Instead they included the couple in their planning against Pitch.
"Hiccup you have worked with him. Any insight on how we could defeat him." Bunny asked, leaning forward on his chair.
"Pitch likes to have the high ground. He wants to get under his opponents skin and try and mess with their mind. He will use and emotional trauma he can access to his advantage, so it's best to wear it all on your sleeve and be proud of it. Fear won't work if you have accepted you past." Hiccup was speaking to everyone, but his words hit home for Jack. Jack had faced Pitch alone before, and this was exactly how he won. By getting under his skin and making his doubt himself.
"Good. Now Jack, do you think you're up to facing him again. Last time almost killed you?" Tooth asked as carefully as she could. Jack just nodded firmly, ending that conversation then and there.
The group carried on planning for a while, until finally they had the perfect plan. It would require Jack as bait, which Hiccup was not keen on at all. But after ten minutes of persistence he finally agreed.
"So it's settled. Now all we can do is wait." North said getting up from his large chair and stretching. The others followed and went their separate ways. They would be called back once pitch had been located. For now everyone needed to recoup after the eventful few days.
Jack and Hiccup wandered down the halls, occasionally stopping to gaze over the busy toy factory below. Jack caught sight of a yeti knitting tiny hats and gloves and an idea sparked. He turned to Hiccup with a mischievous grin and tugged him down endless stairs to the front door.
"Jack where are we going?" Hiccup laughed, breathless.
"You'll see." He said with a smirk, shoving a spare pair of hat and gloves at Hiccup. Hiccup rolled his eyes and let the woollen accessories drop to the floor. He chuckled slightly at Jack's reaction and headed out the door.
"I can create heat Jack." Jack laughed and ran past Hiccup, summoning a small gust of wind to knock Hiccup into the freshly fallen snow. He fell face first with an audible 'oof', sending Jack into fits of laughter. Hiccup pushed himself up and clumped a ball of snow into his palm.
"Oh it's on!"
Soon an all out war was occurring just outside the Pole. Jack had made to mounds of snow for the boys to hide behind. Whenever Jack scored a direct hit, Hiccup would melt parts of his defence as a distraction and pelt him with snowballs. Let's just say Jack never stood a chance. After a while they came out from behind their defences and started throwing handfuls of snow at each other, not even bothering to shape it. Jack slipped and a thick sheet of ice shot out around him.
Hiccup yelped in terror and hovered in the air, not daring to touch the ice. Jack's heart broke at Hiccup's immediate change in tone.
"Hic it's okay. I promise nothing will happen to you." Jack lifted his hand out and Hiccup took it, carefully lowering himself onto the pure blue ice. He wobbled and fell into Jack with another yelp of surprise. Jack's arms stayed strong around his waist.
He pushed with his left foot, making them glide effortlessly across the ice. Hiccup had his eyes screwed shut out of fear.
"Open your eyes." Jack coaxed, pulling Hiccup closer to him. Hiccup opened one eye and instantly closed in again, burying his face into Jack's chest. Jack chuckled lightly and steered them to the edge of the ice.
Feeling the change in surface Hiccup looked up and smiled gratefully. Jack kissed the tip of his nose fondly, leaving a small snowflake on Hiccup's flushed skin. The two blushed and separated slightly, but their arms still remained firmly around the other's waist.
"I love you Jack Frost." Hiccup whispered, not wanting to disturb the peaceful moment.
"I love you too Hiccup Haddock."
Slow, sarcastic clapping echoed against the stone cliff face housing the factory. The couple whipped around but saw no culprit. Then the laughing started. It was quiet at first but slowly grew in volume, becoming more and more sinister as it did so.
"I have to admit, your bond is impressive. Stronger than my magic that's for sure. But your love won't save you from what I am about to do to you and your precious guardians." Pitch's voice rang out but his figure could not be seen.
"Stop hiding Pitch. Come out and face us." Jack yelled, summoning his staff whilst gripping Hiccup's hand with his spare one.
"Oh Frost don't act all brave. We all know that you would rather run than fight."
"Says the person who's hiding." Hiccup spits. A small flame starts in his palm, flickering with the fury of a thousand suns. Pitch laughed harder at this display, clearly unfazed.
"You don't scare me boy. I have been inside your head. I know everything about you, you don't stand a chance." Pitch jeered. A shadow detached from a nearby rock and morphed into the villainous man.
"You are nothing compared to us Pitch." Jack yells, staff crackling as power surges through it. This set of another laughing fit, which the couple used to their advantage. Hiccup shot a ball of fire which warped into a rope as it neared it's target. It coiled around the man's waist, drawing a pained yell from his throat. Jack followed this by freezing his feet to the floor in several thick sheets of ice.
"One our own we are powerful. Together we are unstoppable."
"This isn't possible. I heard your plans, I know what you were going to do." Pitch yelled, trying to breaking out of the fiery rope. Hiccup scoffed and turned to Jack incredulously.
"Has he always been this thick?" He asked Jack, voice laced with humour.
"Pretty much," Jack laughed. "We knew you would be hiding in the shadows watching us. You do so every single time. All we had to do was come up with a fake plan to lure you out. Whilst you are distracted trying to best us, we put the real plan into action."
"Real plan?" Pitch squeaked.
At that moment and small patch of yellow bloomed in Pitch's chest. He turned his head and saw Sandy floating on his cloud with a bow in his hands. Pitch screamed as the gold spread from his chest to the rest of his body, consuming him until he was no more than a pile of sand on the soft white snow.
Hiccup dropped to the floor, glad the confrontation was over. He has never been one for fights. Jack plopped down next to him, seemingly lost for words.
They had won. Pitch was finally gone.
"You two did amazing." North said from the doorway, arms folded across his chest and a proud smile on his face. Bunny and Tooth stood next to him, wearing equally proud smiles.
The two were too exhausted to reply. Consistent use of magic really drains a person! North picked them both up and half lifted them into the warmth of the factory. Distant clanging of furniture alerted all the guardians and they ran - or in Jack and Hiccup's cases floated kind of fast - to the source of the noise.
Two dragons were chasing an elf around the factory, knocking over various toys and machines. The stopped when the guardians came into view, looking sheepishly up at their masters.
"Toothless!" Hiccup scolded fondly.
"Oh now you decide to show up Aithusa. Where were you two days ago when I was dying in a random cove huh?" Of course the dragons didn't answer. They just bolted up to their owners and licked them. A chorus of laughs rang around the room as the two spirits fought against their respective dragons.
"Yeah yeah I missed you too. Now please get off." Hiccup laughed, trying to push the large reptile of his stomach. Toothless picked Hiccup up with his mouth and threw him on his back. "I guess you want a ride. You coming Jack?"
"If she ever gets up." Jack replied. Aithusa let out a low grunt, signifying she wouldn't get up any time soon. Jack rolled his eyes and clicked his fingers, creating a small flurry of snow to fall on her head. She shot up and tried to eat the snow, giving Jack enough time to mount his stubborn dragon.
"Okay lets go!" Jack yelled, patting Aithusa allowing her to take of. The guardians watched as the black and white dragons flew out through the hatch in the roof into the clear blue sky above. For the first time since Pitch reappeared they felt truly at peace. Watching the two laughing and having fun reminded them of why they do what they do.
Protect their children.
