Chapter 4

I sigh, settling into my chair. Classes are about to start. I see the time on the clock above the blackboard and think I deserve a damn prize for being awake at this hour.

My mind travels back to the conversation with Silas, he was as surprised as I was at the mention of the same name.

I knew my suspicions about the girl weren't for nothing. Reading people is something that comes as easily to me as if they were telling me their secrets themselves.

Although my father thought that all this time I've been alone, sitting on my misfortunes over my mother's death, it's not quite right.

Hacking into the psychiatric hospital's cameras, so I could monitor my mother, is something I managed to do a few months after she was admitted. Looking for the limits within which I could get the information through my computer led me to contact a weird guy who answered some of my questions on some sketchy sites.

That's how Silas and I started a small company, getting some assignments from people with power and people with not so much, searching cameras, hacking phones—all were small jobs that kept us entertained and gave us money.

Being young with no job and spending a lot of time in front of a computer was not bad at all.

The slightly bigger jobs came with good results, between recommendations and more, we managed to work for many influential people.

And although maintaining anonymity was one of our primary rules, we went through too much not to trust each other and finally get to know each other.

The short guy with glasses and colorful hair surprised me as much as he was surprised to see me walk into that burger joint that was about to fall down.

I managed to find a place safe enough for both of us to meet. Silas seemed so relieved to get out of his mother's basement that he didn't hesitate to bring his little computer into the new office.

Silas was stunned to see the equipment I got, so much so that he didn't even notice how I almost bounced his own computer, rendering it almost as useless as it already was.

"How do you know that name?" The question comes out of both our mouths once again.

Silas seems amused at the situation, but I start to get more and more annoyed.

"Do you remember I mentioned to you that one of our former clients mentioned having a friend who would require our services?" I nod at Silas' words. "He contacted us."

"I thought we had decided not to take any more orders until we were better settled in this city." I say, reminding him of what we agreed to not more than two months ago.

Moving cities meant I couldn't be as active in my old city, so we couldn't take as many orders due to limited information.

"I know, but I looked into the person who contacted us, you know, for our safety." Silas turns around, typing something fast on the screen in front of him, showing me the emails and some blurry photos. "The person who hired us wasn't from this city, but he's come for some business I haven't managed to decipher yet."

"What is he asking for?" I ask, quickly reading the email with the requested information.

"Information about the governor." I look Silas in the eye, raise an eyebrow to keep him talking. Silas sighs. "He wants to know his schedule, information about the house, information about what he does after his governor's schedule, he wants to know everything."

"An attack?" I ask, grabbing a chair, sitting down in front of a computer, opening the emails myself.

"I don't think so, curiosity?" I laugh at his words.

The classroom door opens, an agitated girl enters, she apologizes to the teacher and walks next to me, the only free seat.

My mouth opens slightly. Unable to hide my mild surprise at her stature.

Truly, her heels were enormous.

I look at her white shoes with furry fur and can't help but make a comment about them.

Sophia looks surprised at my words. As if she really believed I would never speak to her.

But I smile sideways at her as she sits down, unable to get my mind off why she would want information about Oli's dad.

Silas tried to look for additional information on her, but there was nothing in her file that screamed danger.

Which only indicates to me that she has a good hacker group behind her, hiding her true identity.

Because while Young is indeed her last name, Sophia is not her first name.

I spend the class hour with my head in my arms, listening as the girl next to me writes, on the torn sheet of paper I gave her, everything the professor says.

She seems so focused that she doesn't notice me staring at her at the end of class.

Her hand moves fast, her green eyes go from the blackboard to the sheet, turning to look at some students who raise their hands to answer or ask questions, as if she needs to put a face to the voices.

My eyes go to his lips, as she bites the one below, trying to copy, as fast as she can, some test dates and final project dates.

My gaze drifts down to her white t-shirt and the barely well-made black tie.

I hold back as best I can a chuckle listening as the professor waves goodbye to the class before leaving.

I rise from my seat, startling her at the movement of the chair.

I take the sheet, tucking it into my pocket, before leaving the classroom.

I walk down the halls to where Oli said he would be.

I turn slightly to see the girl with the furry shoes following me.

I stop in my tracks, hearing her cell phone fall to the floor from the crash.

"Why do you stop out of nowhere?" her voice seems annoyed, she bends down to pick up her phone, putting her hand on the back of her skirt so nothing shows underneath.

I glare evilly at a guy who blatantly tries to stare, he averts his eyes when he notices my stare.

"Why are you following me?" I ask when her eyes collide with mine.

The girl sighs, putting her purse over her shoulder.

"Ash told me to meet him. I came late and couldn't see him in the morning" I raise an eyebrow, not understanding what it has to do with me, " He told me if I followed you I was going to find him."

I blink, thinking about what I could do to Asher for making such a nuisance of myself.

Because she is, I have enough to do with trying to figure out her reasons without her following me all over college to find her future new boyfriend.

Her smile grows, as if she senses my discomfort and likes it.

The gleam in her greenish eyes makes me narrow mine.

I pick up her cell phone, still in her hands.

I see Asher's chat and almost roll my eyes at the guy's long messages and the girl's short ones.

Asher is really trying hard.

I look at the girl in front of me, who is scowling at me but not taking her cell phone from me at any point.

Her eyes shift from her cell phone to my eyes and for a moment.

Just a second.

I understand why Asher is trying so hard.

I walk into my dad's house, drop the brown sweater I took off when I got in the car.

I go into the kitchen for a bottle of water, leaving my backpack on the table.

I open it, pulling out my computer to check some emails Silas has sent me.

The small ball of paper drops to the floor.

I open it, reading the notes from the black-haired girl. I smile a little as I see how easy it is to read her notes. The girl really knows how to synthesize everything well, jotting down only what's necessarily important.

"Sophia Young." I say, searching once more about her in the app Silas downloaded on my computer, reading and reading once more the little information we have about her.
