Chapter 18
I walk into the office, slamming the front door.
"Damn it Ian you almost scared me to death!" I laugh as I see Silas with a foam finger he brought back as a souvenir from one of the games in the next town over.
I apologize to him, taking off my jacket, trying to get some air into my chest.
I thank the driver when he tells me he has returned to Sophia's house to take her to Oli's to pick up her car.
I sit, facing Silas, running my hands through my hair in desperation, trying to get the discomfort out of my body.
My feelings are on edge, they have been for a long time, but today it all seems so surreal.
"Do you need to talk about something?" Silas' voice seems low. I look at the boy in front of me.
I realize that he is the same age as Sophia and that they would possibly get along well if they knew each other.
That's when I remember that I have secrets just like her, the boy in front of me is one of them.
I sigh, leaning back in my chair, thinking how much I need to vent to someone, but considering if it would be a good idea to tell my colleague that, not only do I know one of our clients, but that I also spent the night with her.
I shake my head.
"Did you hear back from Sophia Young's contact?" I ask, expecting a negative from him.
"I did." my eyes go up to his, his brown eyes looking at me doubtfully, tying up ends of my shifting emotions, all related to that girl. " He agreed to see you."
I check the location on my phone once more, I look at the small forest in front of me. A single light shines in the distance.
I open the car compartment, seeing a small black gun inside.
When Silas couldn't convince me not to come, he just sighed, pulling out the gun, surprising me more than he should.
Even though I refused, I didn't manage to come without it.
I look at the light in front of me, closing the compartment with the pistol inside, hoping I won't completely regret it.
I adjust the hood of my dark sweater, grateful for my big boots as I see the muddy path.
I slow my steps when I see the small cabin. The lights inside are on, a faint smell of coffee fills the place.
I review once again the small map that Silas managed to make once he sent us the address of the place through an encrypted message.
The address came with a time stamp, I almost ran out of the office when I saw that the cabin ahead was almost an hour away.
The light from my cell phone illuminates my face, relieved that there are still a couple of minutes before the appointed time.
I look at the entrance, wondering if I'm betraying her in some way by being here. If I crossed a line, she didn't want me to cross.
But being here, my curiosity blossoms from where it has been imprisoned for so long.
I need answers.
I knock on the door three times, counting to ten, before knocking one last time.
I hold my breath when I hear noise inside.
The door opens, revealing a cozy living room. The cottage is so small that from the entrance I can see the kitchen next door, a door leading to the bathroom and a small glass door revealing a chair on the terrace.
My eyes drop to the gentleman in front of me.
A feeling of familiarity comes over me.
His pale blue eyes scan me, his hair is white with age, his eyes look tired, but there is determination in them.
The gentleman steps aside, pointing me to the couch in the living room.
I sit down, not taking my eyes off him, when he pours some coffee into both cups in front of us.
He sits down in front of me, taking a sip of his coffee.
"I never imagined a lawyer would approve of his son being a hacker." his voice is raspy but not soft.
I try not to flinch at his words.
He knows who my father is, he knows who I am. Which makes sense, if there wasn't so much on the table he wouldn't risk revealing himself.
The fact that I'm rebelling in front of him indicates how stupid I can be at times.
"My father has other things to take care of." I merely say, a small smile appearing on his lips.
"I imagine so, yes, a slightly controversial new wife is something anyone would need to take care of carefully." I try to breathe, realizing I've held my breath.
"As much as I'd like to keep talking about my family, that's not what I came for." My words come out harsher than I expected, but his smile doesn't disappear.
"I imagine not, tell me Mr. Hill, to what do I owe the pleasure of your curiosity?"
I think carefully about my words. I think about the questions that run and run in my head but I push them away.
I know what I came for. The rest will come when it has to. At least I hope it will.
"I want to help Sophia Young destroy her father."
I yawn one more time so far in ten minutes.
I see that I've missed most of my morning classes, but the thought of getting home to think about everything discussed in the cabin is almost as scary as Professor Brown's class and her horrible graphs.
My stomach growls hungrily. I walk to one of the cafeterias to buy something, feeling stupid for believing that Sophia and I would have a normal enough relationship that we could have breakfast together.
I walk to a table by the courts, waiting for Luna and Oli to come eat after their classes.
I plop down on the bench, putting my hands behind my head.
Making a list of things I need to do, things I need to research, people I need to contact, and how to make this all work without her getting hurt in any way.
I don't notice when I fall asleep, I hear people talking, but my eyes seem so heavy that I don't allow them to open.
I feel my head lift, I open my eyes, startled a little to see her green eyes.
Sophia gives me an awkward little smile, before settling my head on her legs.
I realize, even with my eyes half closed, that my body spanned the entire bench and that Luna, Asher and Oli are on the other side.
I return my eyes to hers, seeing sadness and guilt dancing in them. I smile back at her without showing my teeth.
Annoyance courses through my veins as I remember her harsh words this morning, her clear guilt is hardly comforting.
I close my eyes, trying to focus on something other than her perfume, on her naked abdomen, close to my lips and black hair, so long it pinked my nose.
I squint my eyes when a light blinds me, I see the glint of the sun through the golden chain that Sophia has decided to use to decorate her abdomen.
My finger moves without my permission, running it in between her abdomen and her chain.
When the girl startles at the touch, I almost laugh. I close my eyes, enjoying her closeness, not taking it for granted that I will have her forever.
