Chapter 13
I leave the house with the small gift box for Luna.
Oli wrote to me explaining how late he went to bed the night before, trying to calm Luna down about today's exhibition. Even though it's not her first, Luna is expecting several famous artists to come to see the paintings and sculptures. It's a great opportunity for her, both to get work with some well-known museums or for her works to be sold in the future.
I look at the time on my cell phone calculating the time it would take me to get to the museum.
I look at my outfit one more time just to make sure Luna doesn't scold me for not being presentable enough for the event.
I thank the girl for the brochure with the itinerary of the event. I'm surprised to see a lot of people, I smile when I recognize some kids from Luna's classes, all of them wearing their best outfits while trying to hide their nerves because of the curiosity of the people visiting the event.
I look at the artwork taking my time.
When I recognize the red hair of the girl, who is nervously giving an explanation about her paintings, I approach.
I listen to her words, looking at the paintings, trying to connect her words with her whole artistic process.
I approach Luna when the people have moved away.
She gives me a beautiful smile before pouncing on me. I return the hug by handing her the small box. Her eyes light up.
"You didn't have to," she says, opening it. I shrug, happy to see her reaction to the shiny bracelet with brush charms and some objects referring to great art pieces around the world.
Luna thanks me, hugging me once again.
"You really did a good job Luna" I say, looking once again at her paintings.
The first painting is of two little boys smiling up at the sky as a red balloon flies off into the sky, the second painting is of a boy in front of a large vineyard, the color of the sky is pink and purple, but it is the third painting that takes my breath away as I see it more clearly.
It's the green eyes that leave me transfixed, the pale girl's black hair is all over the place, but her blushing cheeks make the whole picture glow.
The girl in the painting is in a thin camisole, her collarbone is showing, her shoulders are almost holding her face.
I look at the paintings once again smiling at the idea that Luna portrayed all of us. Oli and me in our childhood, Asher in his home country and Sophia. As beautiful as ever.
"You really did a good job." I said I was trying to catch my breath, not taking my eyes off the black-haired girl in the painting.
I turn away from Luna at her incidence that I have to see the sculptures. I say goodbye to her for the moment, walking towards where the people continue the tour.
I listen to the presentations of some students, looking at the different sculptures. I look at the time on my cell phone to see that Luna has written for lunch at the back of the museum.
I hear the voice of a teacher. I turn my face and smile sideways as I see the little black-haired girl walking fast towards the teacher Luna is afraid of.
Sophia looks tired, her cheeks are a little flushed, but her smile doesn't disappear from her face.
I walk to the back of the museum, approaching Asher, greeting him with a frown as I see his annoyance at his phone.
He returns my greeting, barely. I greet Oli and hug Luna before walking with Oli to the small cafeteria and ordering lunch for everyone.
We arrive with lunch a few minutes before Sophia comes out of the museum and approaches us with a tired little smile.
"Eat, you need energy or you'll pass out." Oli passes her a plate with a sandwich and a soda.
Sophia thanks him, opening the plastic container before taking a bite.
Still chewing, the black-haired girl picks up her cell phone, typing something quickly.
"The edible prints of the logos for the cookies are ready."
"I can pick them up after I leave." I say seeing Silas' message for me to stop by the office as soon as possible.
I look at the time, seeing that I could just stop by later because of her order.
"Perfect. I'll leave your name so there's no problem." Sophia sends the message, reaches into her wallet to pull out the money, but when she wants to give it to me, I shake my head.
"Shit." Asher curses looking at his phone "I need to answer this."
Asher walks away from us.
We all turn to look at Luna, Luna being the only one who knows most things.
Luna grimaces.
"Asher's grandfather has insisted on meeting him. Even though he's nowhere near the throne line, still his grandfather insists that Asher spend more time in his country. The relationship he has with his grandfather is not bad, but the one his father has with his father is."
I look at Asher, his tense back, letting me see how stressed he is about the conversation with whoever is on the other end of the line.
I think about Asher's lineage, how his father was almost on the run from his country, escaping whatever the Scottish crown was demanding, even though he was seventh in line to the throne.
Asher has been grumpy for days now, but I hadn't related it so much to his family as to the upcoming exams.
I see Sophia's frown, wondering if it is worry or guilt reflected in her eyes.
Asher returns only to apologize, he has to go home to meet his father. He says goodbye to Sophia with a light kiss on the lips that makes me look away.
Asher promises to arrive later at Oli's house.
Luna says goodbye a few minutes later, Oli accompanies her into the museum.
"Do you want some dessert?" I ask Sophia who had been staring at the place where Asher disappeared a while ago. She turns to look at me and then closes the empty container in front of her.
"Do you want to? Mmm, I wouldn't think I could finish a whole one, shall we share?"
I open the door for her, waiting for her to get out before closing it.
I try to hide my smile when I see her face, her eyes have lit up at the sight of the chocolate shop in front of her.
The obsession this girl has with chocolate is unhealthy, but when I saw this new store last week when I was buying some medicine and vitamins for Silas, she came to mind.
Sophia listens to the employee about how to grab the chocolate, the black-haired girl nods with eyes full of excitement and almost runs to see everything that is available before she starts choosing.
I look at my cell phone with a frown on my face after saying goodbye to Sophia, I answer the phone only when I see her come back into the museum.
"What's wrong?" I drop the keys in the jar, taking off my shoes, and at the same time the sliding door opens, letting me see Silas.
The boy seems to have paled a little, looking at me with his mouth open, searching for the right words to tell me whatever is going on.
"I found out Sophia Young's connection to the governor. Yes, she is his daughter, as you suspected, but the girl doesn't want to connect with her father, she wants to destroy him completely."
