Chapter 2- Dead Boy by the Riverbank

Nico's POV

Two weeks after a suicide attempt and my dad is already yelling at me about school and college and getting a job. I get up and leave, not really wanting to hear that lecture right now. So I take my motorcycle and I go to the worst part of town, well best for me. It's quiet and empty there, reminds me of myself. Well its usually quiet...

I heard a lot of screaming and yelling coming from one of the buildings I past. A minute later I hear a loud splash. Quickly stopping the bike near the building, I run around back to where the river was. I gasp at the sight. A boy, probably around my age, was bruised and laying motionless on the riverbank, lower body in the cold water still. I quickly pull the soaked boy out, wrapping my jacket around him. Damn, I wonder, what the fuck happened? I could've sworn he was dead until he started choking, coughing up water.

"Easy there." I soothe as he coughed up all the water.

After another minute or so, he regained his breath, and looked up at me. He was definitely Latin or something close, with that tan skin, curly brown hair and gleaming eyes. He had these elfish features, looking like a Mexican Elf on the Shelf.

"Damn boy." He whistled. "I must've died cause you sure look like an angel to me."

I just roll my eyes. "You jumped off a building into a river and the first thing you do is flirt with the guy who rescued you?"

"Hard to get. I like." He grins and I had the urge to slap him.

"Just shut up." I say. "Can you stand?"

He shrugs and I sigh, getting up. I help him to his feet and I noticed how wobbly he was. The boy collapsed but I caught him before he hit the ground. Quickly stooping down, I scoop him up and carry him back to my bike princess style.

"Damn you're strong.." He mumbles, head resting on my shoulder.

"And you're annoying as fuck." I say, sitting him on the bike and putting my helmet on before getting on as well. "Hold on to me."

That was the only warning I gave before I was speeding down the quiet roads, only the sound of my engine heard. He was yelling, holding on for dear life as I got out of there as fast as I could. As soon as we hit the main roads though I slowed down.

"Yo can you take me to my house?" He asks.

"We're going to the hospital." I say, trying to remember the way there. You'd think I know with the amount of times I've had to go.

We eventually get there, the kid babbling some shit that I barely heard over the sound of other cars. I had to pry him off me, him getting really tense when we had passed some red ferrari. I take the helmet off him, his curls bouncing back into place. Before I went to help him off though I noticed tears streaking down his face. Frowning, I go and wipe his eyes.

"You okay? Did I scare you?" I ask, trying to calm him down.

"I fell off a building." He choked out. "I almost died.."

Not sure if ptsd can come into play this early but whatever. I carefully help him off the bike, carrying him inside.

"I almost died!" He sobbed. "If I hit the rocks! Oh god!"

"Hey its alright, you'll be okay." I soothe, walking into the building.

The receptionist frowns when she sees me. "Di Angelo." She sighed, getting up to get a wheel chair.

I sat the boy in it gently but he still clung to my arm. "Don't let go don't let go don't let go.." He whimpered.

All that realization and fear must've just come in like a smack in the face on the poor kid. It's what I faced after my first attempt.

"I'm right here, I'm not letting go." I said.

"What happened to him? And who is he?" She asks.

"I don't know. He fell off one of the old hotels into the river." I sigh.

"All the way down there? Poor thing." She says as a nurse comes and wheels him away.

I followed quickly, still holding hands with him.

"What's your relation with him?" The nurse asks, taking the kid into a room and helping him onto the bed.

"Adopted brothers." I lie. "Please he needs me."

"There doesn't appear to be any big problem so I'll get him some fresh clothes and you can wait for the doctor to make a diagnosis." The nurse says before leaving.

I go over to him and stop him from pulling the covers off. "Can you sit up?" I ask and he shakes his head.

I sighed, helping him up and going to take off his wet clothes. He was shaking again as I got him undressed.

"You're taking off your underwear." I say, turning away.

He groaned, and I hear the bed shift as he took them off before covering himself in a blanket, my jacket still on him. I was glad I wore long sleeves today.

Another two minutes of waiting and that nurse and a doctor come in. The ladies both smile at us before do the regular drill of questions while taking care of him. I explained what happened from my perspective before turning to the boy. He just shook his head, mouth staying shut.

After a while of looking him over with tests and x-rays, the doctor says he has a concussion, sprained wrist, broken rib, slight memory loss, definite ptsd from when I told her how he went from flirty to terrified, along with bruises that'll last a few weeks. He's apparently very lucky it wasn't worse. Also they did a blood test and found him in their system.

Leo Valdez.

I like it.
