Chapter 2 - Computer people always make things easier
One week later....
"The teller inside I.D.'d Clyde Mardon as the shooter from Rani's surveillance tapes." Detective West informs to his partner as we walk out of the Central City Bank.
"Christ." Detective Chyre says. "The Mardon brothers are back? Didn't we already put those low-lives in prison?"
"On a ten-to-twenty stretch... which in Central City's warped math comes out to two years time served," Detective West sighs turning as Captain Singh approaches us. "Perps took the bank, hot-wired a parked car to make their getaway. Then for a chaser, they shot Mr. Brian Cunningham here." He says gesturing to the covered body in front of us. "I got unis kicking in doors of known Mardon brothers associates."
"Also, I'm running through the surveillance tapes for the getaway car," I add. "Once I enhance the video back at the station and get a hit on the make and model, I'll let you know."
"Has CSI been over it yet?" Singh questions.
"Um...no." Detective West deadpans.
"Where's Allen?" He sighs. "Detective, you can't keep covering for him. If he's not here, I'm gonna have to carry on this investigation without him--"
"Sorry, I'm late, Captain Singh!" A very familiar voice says and once I turn I realize why I've heard it before.
"What was it this time, Mister Allen?" Singh questions. "Did you forget to set your alarm clock? Before you answer, I should remind you, the excuse you gave last time was car trouble. Wanna know why that one was particularly memorable?"
"I do not own a car," Barry answers awkwardly and I do my best to hold in a smile.
"He was running an errand for me." Joe covers. "Barry, did you get me what I asked for?"
"Uh... yeah... I, um... I have it right here." Barry says, checking his pockets, before sheepishly pulling out a half-eaten chocolate bar. "I may have had a few bites."
Joe gestures to the car tracks and Barry gets to work.
"Getaway car is a Mustang Shelby GT-500. Shelby's have a rear super-wide tire specific to that model. 12 inches with an asymmetrical tread. Hmm, there's something else." Barry says, he borrow's Chyre's pen and uses it to pick at a brown substance on the footprints. "Fecal excrement. Animal, I'd guess,"
"My dad gave me that pen. Before he died." Chyre says and Barry turns away awkwardly. "Sorry."
"Allen, head back to the station with Ms. Raymond and work the evidence." Captain Singh orders before turning to me. "I assume you'll have the surveillance tapes on my desk by the time I get back."
"Yes sir," I respond and shut my laptop and wait for Barry to catch up.
"So, I assume your interview went well." Barry comments.
"It did, thanks to you," I smile.
"So, how have you like Central City?" Barry asks.
"Well, it's a lot sunnier than Starling which I appreciate greatly." I laugh. "Plus my brother and his friends at STAR labs have been a big help at getting used to this area."
"Hold up, your brother works in STAR labs?!" Barry says.
"Yeah, he's their lead engineer," I say. "I'm gonna have to be down there tonight to help with turn on."
"That is awesome," Barry says. "You think someday...maybe you could get me inside?"
"Oh, Mr. Allen it would be my pleasure," I say.
We arrive at the station and head upstairs to the lab. I hop into the swivel chair near the door and use the momentum to roll myself all the way to my desk.
"I hope you don't mind sharing your lab," I tell him, uploading the video from the shooting onto my computer and enhancing the video simultaneously. "They didn't have enough space down there for me so Captain Singh decided I set up here."
"It's alright. I could use some company," Barry says, starting to run the analysis of the evidence. After that we work in silence for a little while, both of us busy with our tasks.
"Hey!" A new voice says from the door. "I am ready to see this atom smasher.....smashing."
"Hey Iris!" I say from my desk without turning around.
"Hey, Rani! So you ready to go Barry?" Iris questions.
"Wait, you two know each other?" He asks and we laugh.
"Yeah, I walked up into your lab the other day looking for you and found her," Iris says.
"And I gave her food," I add.
"So it's a perfect start to a friendship." Iris finishes and Barry shakes his head at us.
"There was a shooting today. Your dad needs me to process some evidence. Which means I don't know if we're gonna be able to make it to Star Labs."
"Seeing this thing turn on is like your dream," Iris states grabbing some of Barry's fries. "Your sad little nerdy dream. Plus, I canceled a date for this."
"Hands off my fries." Barry says, "Unbelievable."
"I'm stress-eating over my dissertation," Iris explains. "We started selling cronuts at Jitters, I ate two today. If I don't graduate soon, I'm gonna be more muffin-top than woman."
"Hold up I got you," I say, opening one of my file drawers and pulling out a granola bar and throwing it to Iris.
"This is why I love you, Rani," Iris says, ripping open the package.
"You don't love me, you love my food," I reply back, sending the last of the enhanced footage to Captain Singh before finally turning around.
"That is a valid point," Iris replies.
"Well, you look amazing," Barry says and Iris rolls her eyes and by the look on Barry's face, I can tell that he likes her. I wiggle my eyebrows at him and he gives me a look.
"What is so important about this particle accelerator anyway?" Iris asks and Barry immediately perks up.
"Harrison Wells' work in quantum theory is light-years ahead of anything they're doing at CERN." Barry answers.

"You're doing that thing where you're not speaking English," Iris replies so I step in.
"Okay let me explain that," I say. "Quantum theory is an interesting part of physics, light-years is an extremely far distance and CERN is this really revolutionary science facility in Europe."
"That sorta helps?" Iris says, still kinda confused.
"Ok," Barry says and starts drawing on the whiteboard behind us. "Just imagine that that dot is everything the human race has ever learned until this moment."
"Does that include twerking?" Iris asks and I snort.
"That," Barry continues, drawing a bigger circle around the dot. "Is everything we could learn from the particle accelerator. It's a whole new way of looking at physics. It will literally change the way that we think about everything."
"You gotta get yourself a girlfriend," Iris says, grabbing his shoulders and Barry looks down.
"Hey leave them alone," Detective West says, walking in. "They're working."
"Hi Dad," Iris says as a little beep cuts her off. "Your test thingy is done."
"Hey Rani, I could use some of that computer genius right now." He says and I laugh, rolling over in my chair to his computer.
"This chemical was in the fecal matter, and it's found in an antibiotic," Barry says. "If you could find out what manufacturer sells it-"
"And then cross reference with shipments to find where the antibiotic was sold to and used in Central City?" I finish. "Already working on it."
Barry smiles as I furiously type away, getting the appropriate information. "Oh, my job is about to get ten times easier thanks to you."
I hit the enter key and four locations come up on the screen. "Computer people always make jobs easier. And you are welcome," I smirk, feeling very satisfied with myself.
"Awesome," Barry says before turning back to Joe and Iris.
"I think-"
"We think," I interrupt and Barry gives me a look.
"WE think the Mardon brothers are hiding on a farm. The fecal matter I found on the street, it was cow manure, which contains traces of oxytetracycline. It's the antibiotic I was asking Rani to backtrace. There are only four farms in the area that still use it in their feed. I bet you find a very sweet Shelby parked at one of them."
"Dad, seeing as how Barry solved your poop problem, how about letting him go to Star Labs?" Iris asks and Joe sighs.
"Fine, go." He concedes.
"Yes!" Iris cheers giving Joe a kiss.

"Thank you, Joe," Barry says before racing out of the room behind Iris and I can't help but smile.
"You not going to this particle accelerator thing turning on?" Joe asks me.
"Actually, I am," I say. "My cousin Ronnie is the lead engineer and he wants me to be there. I was just waiting to see if anyone else needed me before I clocked out."
"Go," Joe smiles. "Just have your phone on you in case we need you."
"Thank you!" I say before logging off of my computer and hurrying out of the lab. I jump on my motorcycle and drive to STAR labs as fast as legally possible.
I show my STAR Labs ID to the security guard and I sprint/run to the Cortex.
"Hey Little R!" Ronnie greets and I hug him. "Didn't think you were going to make it."
"Got held up at work," I respond. "But I'm here! And that's all that matters."
"Is this how it feels to make history?" Cisco asks from the computer set up. "Because if it is we need to start making history more often."
We laugh as Dr. Wells walks in with Caitlin behind him. She walks over to me and gives me a hug. "I'm so glad you're here."
"Me too Cait." I say smiling back at her. Over her shoulder I notice Hartley having a pointed conversation with Dr. Wells before Wells waves it off and turns to address all of us.
"We're ready," Dr. Wells says and I can see Hartley clench his jaw. "Turn the particle accelerator on."
