Chapter 18 - Grumpy Cat Flash
"Oh my gosh," Felicity exclaims as Barry stops at the entrance to the Cortex, and we almost immediately start squabbling over not letting me out of his arms due to my leg injury. "Is this normal?" She whispers to Caitlin.
"Sort of. They're normally bickering more than this."
I huff, completely oblivious to Caitlin and Fel's conversation. "Barry you put me down this instant.
"Yeah, not going to happen."
"Just because I can't freaking go from 0 to 500 in a second does not mean I can't move my legs or walk."
He shakes his head, setting me carefully on the med-bed. "Rani, Snart shot you in the leg, I'm not going to go and let you make that any worse."
"He shot your chest!"
"I have regenerative healing."
"Nu-uh. So do I. You don't get to use that excuse anymore." I retort.
Barry sighs, shaking his head and sliding up onto the bed next to me as Caitlin walks over with her tools and starts checking our injuries. Barry quickly speeds off of his suit before flopping back down while I just sit as Caitlin wraps a bandage around my leg.
"It's still numb," He says once she's started looking at his injury.
"It's presenting itself like third-degree frostbite," Caitlin responds.
"I thought they had hyper healing?" Felicity asks.
"It's been slowed. If their cells weren't regenerating at the rate they are, the blood vessels would have frozen solid and any nerve damage would have been permanent." Caitlin says eyeing the two of us.
"You're both lucky to be alive."
"Snart wasn't another meta-human," Barry remembers. "He has some kind of gun. It froze things, slowed me down...if it wasn't for Rani.....we would not have been able to save him."
"According to his record," Felicity adds. "Snart didn't even bother to finish high school, so how did he build a handheld high tech snow machine?"
Dr. Wells sighs, "S.T.A.R. Labs built the cold gun."
"Dr. Wells and Caitlin had nothing to do with this," Cisco speaks up, his guilt written clear on his face. "I built the gun."
"You did?" I ask, not completely surprised.
"Why?" Barry asks, looking a little more hurt than I do at the moment.
"Because speed and cold are opposites. Temperature is measured by how quickly the atoms of something are oscillating. The faster they are, the hotter it is, and when then are cold, they're slower on the atomic level. When there's no movement at all, it's called-"
"Absolute zero." Barry finishes.
"I designed a compact cryo engine to achieve absolute zero," Cisco admits. "I built it to stop you. I didn't know who you were then, Barry. I mean, what if you turned out to be some psycho, like Mardon or Nimbus?"
"Cisco it's alr-" I start to say.
"But I didn't. Did I? Neither of us went crazy Cisco!" Barry snaps and I glance over at him, shocked that he's taking this so personally.
"We built the entire structure you're standing in to do good, and it blew up," Dr. Wells interjects. "In the wake of that, you can understand why Cisco would want to be prepared for the worst."
"I can understand that, but what I can't understand is why you didn't tell me what you did. I mean, after all we've been through, I thought you trusted me. I thought we were friends."
"We are, Barry," Cisco pleads.
"I mean, if you would have just told me, I could have been prepared. But instead, someone nearly died tonight."
"And I have to live with that." He concedes.
"No, Cisco. We all do." Barry corrects before angrily storming off.
The remaining four of us shift awkwardly as Cisco excuses himself to take inventory and make sure that nothing else was taken.
"Do you guys mind if I go talk him?" I ask.
"I figured to might say that about Barry," Dr. Wells says, implicating his questions with an eyebrow raise.
"Barry's angry, and I'm the least qualified person to help him," I respond, using Caitlin as a post to stand.
"Here," She says, pulling some crutches out of a nearby closet. "Don't trip with them."
"I make no promises," I respond, swinging my way out of the Cortex to one of the lower labs where Cisco is.
"Do me a favor and stop beating yourself up," I advise him, making my presence in the room known.
"Really? I thought you'd be crazy upset about this.." He says, not looking up from his tablet.
"Well I say that you did the right thing Cisco," I say and his head snaps up, the shock clear on his face. "I remember back at Starling, we had contingency plans for each other. The Black Canary thought it would be best if we did, in case one of us went crazy or lost control. We knew everyone else's weaknesses but never our own. Which kinda made it difficult, but they were working on that when I lift. This is no different."
"Barry doesn't seem to think that."
"Barry's new to this. You all are, and that's why he took it personally."
"What so you're just some expert on heroism?" He scoffs and I raise an eyebrow at him.
"I'm no hero Cisco," I respond. "I've just seen enough to know that if something you thought could help falls into the wrong hands, it is never your fault," I respond.
"Thanks, Rani," Cisco responds, feeling slightly better about himself before realizing what I said. "But why don't you think you're a hero?"
I smile a little sadly before heading back out of the room, "Don't worry about it. Quit your moping and I'll help you find a way to track Snart."
"How?"
"Don't look at me! It's your gun." I respond and he chuckles before passing me a tablet and we set down to get this done.
------------------------
"Guys I think we did it!" Cisco says, bursting into the Cortex as I try to keep up with my slightly healed leg.
"It??" Felicity asks skeptically.
"By it as in we found a way to track Captain Cold," I snort. "Get your head out of the gutter Lici."
"You know I can't control it," She whispers to me as I walk to stand by her as Cisco explains the plan to a very grumpy Barry.
"This E.C.U. was receiving updates wirelessly from my tablet," Cisco says as I tune myself back into the conversation. "If I boost the signal using Central City's network and send a false update, we'll get a ping back, and then..."
"We can track Snart," I finish.
"How long will it take?" Dr. Wells asks.
"First I have to hack into the City's network, so I don't know, 30 minutes, maybe?" Cisco says and Felicity and I immediately turn to each other in excitement.
"We can do it in less that one." Fel and I say at the same time and quickly dive for the last swivel chair. Unfortunately, in my slightly less injured state, she gets to it faster than I do.
"Rude."
"You know you love me." She laughs before trying to crack her knuckles. "Ow! That was not as badass as I pictured."
I laugh as we both furiously start typing out code into our consoles, "That's just karma."
"It's the moments like this that I really hate your codename." She jokes as we flip spots and enter the final line of code.
"All right, We're in!" Felicity says and we fist bump as the rest of the team looks at us in shock.
"Are you kidding?" Cisco asks in delight. "All right, I'm sending the updates."
"We're connected. Network is triangulating the location." Felicity says as the location pops up on my monitor.
"We got him. He's heading west on Nelson toward the train station." I say turning to Dr. Wells.
"If he's leaving, it appears Mr. Snart may have gotten what he came for." He says and Cisco looks up brightly.
"When we put our minds to it, dude, nothing can stop us." He says as Barry puts on his suit...but leaves his earpiece off. "Fel he's running angry," I say rolling over to her. "We need to back him up. Remember what happened when we left Oliver on the streets angry?"
"How do you know he's going to lea-" She starts to say, but is cut off by a strong and sudden gust of wind. "Okay, I see your point. What's the plan?"
"I've got an idea for draw Snart off," I say. "The only thing that's gonna stop him is when he's outmatched. You try and get everyone on the same page."
"On it!" She says and I bolt for the hallway, making my way to the lab for some supplies. I fish around for something that would look like a cannon and find the STAR labs vacuum cleaner and some LED lights.
"What the heck are you doing?" Cisco asks as Felicity and Caitlin come around the corner behind him
"Making it look like Snart's outgunned," I say, realizing he's holding a duffle bag in his hand. "Wait what are you doing?"
"Giving you a makeover," He laughs. "It's time that you got something that reflected your powers."
Confused, I open the bag to find a beautiful blue suit, with the similar feel as Barry's does, and even the emblem on its chest.
"So what do you say Flare?" Felicity asks with a smile.
I smile, feeling this smooth fabric under my fingertips. "The Flare and the Flash? It's growing on me."
"Well it better hang on," Caitlin adds. "Because I kinda like it."
I slip on the new blue mask, feeling a new hope brewing inside of me.
"Let's go save our guy."
"More like your guy with the way you two look at each other," Cisco mumbles quietly to Caitlin before she smacks him.
"Ow! Don't deny it!"
A/n: Rani's new costume...but don't tell her I called it that ;)
