Chapter 17 - "Do you need anymore proof than that?!"
After almost twenty minutes of yelling at people who can't drive or park in a spot, I finally walk into the Central City Train Station and spot the awkward blonde a little ways away from a charging station.
"Hey! Felicity!" I call out, waving my hand at her so she can see me.
"Oh my gosh, thank goodness." She laughs, giving me a hug. "It has been waaaayy too long."
"That's partially my fault," I respond guiding her out of the train station to Caitlin's car. "I did technically take an eight-month nap."
"You're so casual about it," She laughs, hopping into the car and I start it, pulling out of the parking lot and heading to my apartment. "But I have to say, I know you might have been in a comatose state.....but hibernating for 8 months without a care in the world sounds really relaxing."
"Not if you woke up tired," I snark back and she laughs.
"That's relatable." She says and I can notice her smile disappearing.
"Fel what's wrong?" I ask, glancing at her sudden change in demeanor.
"I'm sorry, I just never got to tell you how sorry I was when I heard about Ronnie." She responds and I sigh, the heartache reforming in my chest. "I mean, I still told you.....you were just asleep."
"Don't worry about it," I respond. "I've just tried to keep my head held high. And plus, someone brought it up that Ronnie wouldn't want me moping around because he was gone."
"Barry say that?" She asks.
"Caitlin actually," I respond. "She had the extra time to heal compared to me, so she knew what I was dealing with."
"Wow," Felicity remarks. "And you still find a way to keep smiling."
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," I reply with a smile, wriggling my gloved fingers as blue electricity dances across them.
She laughs and we arrive at my apartment and drop off her stuff at my guest bedroom before running back to the car and driving back to CCPD.
"So how's the IT job at CCPD compared to a secretary of Queen Consolidated?" She asks and I snort.
"I forgot about that," I laugh. "It's definitely a lot more interesting and I feel like I'm actually making a difference with my day job."
"Day job as in you kept the night job?" She asks. "I thought you left Starling to get away from that."
"Yeah that's what I originally thought, and then Barry Allen smiled to my face and I got thrown right back in," I respond.
"He does have the tendency to do that," She murmurs looking out the window and I throw a side-glance at her.
"Is that a crush I'm hearing Ms. Smoak?" I mean to tease as strange heaviness settling in my chest that I can't quite identify.
"NO! Well....yes? I don't know!" She rambles. "When Barry came to Starling City to find the forensics about the mirakuru soldiers, I thought we had something. We danced, it was great and he was interested. And then you two got struck by lighting. So other than obviously checking that you and Barry were okay....."
"You wanted to see if that attraction was still there." I finish as we get out of the car and enter the elevator up to the precinct. "And technically I absorbed the city's electrical grid which was far more power than any lightning bolt can produce."
"Is that the reason for the gloves?" She asks.
"Cisco and Dr. Wells thinks they might be able to regulate my powers from frying everything I touch. And so far they've done that job." I say, walking up the lab.
"You never know what kind of weirdos are out there trolling on the internet." I hear Barry's voice say and we turn the corner to find Barry and Iris arguing.
"We can vouch for that," Felicity remarks. "The internet is full of weirdos and nerd rage..."
"Lots and lots of nerd rage," I add, remembering my tumblr dashboard from high school. But then again, it's not like it's gotten less crazy.
"Felicity Smoak," Fel says, introducing herself to Iris.
"Iris West." She responds with a smile.
"Barry Allen," He adds and we all look back at him and I raise an eyebrow. "But you three already knew that."
"Felicity is...." Barry starts.
"The girl that you met in Starling City, the computerer, right? And of course, Rani's best friend," Iris says bumping my side with a chuckle. "You worked on one of Barry's unexplainable cases."
"Which, long story short, was definitely explainable." She rambles and Iris chuckles, giving me a knowing and suggestive glance before excusing herself with a smirk.
I get her vibe and with the same pang in my chest from earlier, I suggest, "Barry why don't you take Felicity out to the park across the street? It's warmer outside and actually sunny."
They agree and head out of the precinct as I toss Barry his jacket, trying to distract myself with my computer from their laughter as it echoes down the hall.
And that's when it hits me. The reason why I'm on edge even though my best friend is in town and my powers are finally under control.
Karma's gotten herself a hard case of jealousy.
Which can only mean one thing....I let him get too close to my heart. Something I didn't think I'd be able to do after my incident at Starling. The best part is, I can't do anything about it but be the friend Felicity and Barry needs me to be.
I groan at my position in this universe and grab my earbuds, strapping myself in for a night of work pulling computer after computer off of the pile, fixing, restoring and backing up any important details.
This goes on for hours and if it wasn't for the Seven Nation Army playing on loop through my earbuds I might have gone insane.
But finally, right as the sun starts setting, with it's rays tainting the colors of the lab orange, I make it through my giant pile of tech. I flop down in the back of my chair, my brain heavy and utterly exhausted from the workload. Once it's finally time to clock out I log out of my computer, before grabbing all of my stuff and my laptop bag and packing up anything I need to bring home.
My phone buzzes and I check the message, finding that it's from Cisco, and not Felicity as I originally thought.
I stifle a snort and hop on my motorcycle before driving off to STAR labs through the city center, smiling at the lights flying by me.
But all of a sudden there's a quick tap on my shoulder, and I feel slight drain engery through it and I nearly topple my bike, as a bright red flash whizzes by me. And for some strange reason, my eyes are able to follow him as he weaves in and out of traffic and takes a left out of sight. In fact, I could just make out his arms and feet as he ran.
So instead of driving back to STAR labs, I take the next left, craning my neck as best I can for a glimpse of Barry, and thankfully I'm able to spot him speed one of the local theaters. As I pull up, I press one of the buttons on my bike and it opens up a compartment with my Karma jacket and mask.
And at this point, that's all I have time to pull on. I never understood how Oliver can change into his Arrow gear so quickly. I though that would come with the vigliante gig, but I'm still confuzzled by it.
I spot the door Barry run through the front entrance and I park my bike on the side and race as fast as my non-speedster legs can move, pushing past frantic civilians trying to run from whatever the heck is going on. I crouch behind a pillar as the ski-goggle crazy guy starts to shoot his gun at Joe. Barry thankfully pushes him out of the way, but still get's a hit from the gun.
"Time for a test run," He says. "Let's see how fast you are," Then he starts aiming his gun around, shooting bursts of ice at the civilians cowering behind the railings. I start ushering people out as quickly as I can, making my way into one of the theaters as Barry runs back and forth, pulling people out of the ice gun's path.
"What's going on?!" One of the security guards asks me as I finally clear up the area.
"No time to explain, evaluate what's left of the people!" I respond and he gives me a look.
"Why the hell would I take orders from you?" He asks and I'm about to give him a snappy response when I see the cold-guy aim his gun at the two of us. My eyes widen and then everything happens all at once. I tackle the security guard to the aisle next to us, but not before a searing cold sensation tears through my lower left leg.
"NO!" I hear someone yell as I awkwardly and painfully pull myself off of the ground as the security guard scuttles away, barking instructions for evacuation into his walkie-talkie.
"Geez, not even a thank you," I mutter under my breath, looking up at Barry in front of me, a patch of ice frozen to part of the midsection of his suit.
"Ra-Karma..." He says, correcting himself before helping me up and I almost swat his help away until I look at the doorway and see our guy is gone. "Your leg....."
"Yeah, did it take your forensic skills to tell you it hurts like hell?" I snark back before looking at his side. "Can you run with that?"
"I'll manage," He responds, pulling me into his arms and racing out of the theater, most likely to STAR labs. I bury my head in the crook of his neck and tighten my grip around his neck as he runs, expelling some of my electricity into him, and smile as the world starts moving by faster.
And I don't care if it's cheesy as hell, (sorry I tend to swear a lot when I'm frustrated or in pain) but I feel this safety when he's running that I haven't experienced since.....since the last time Ronnie hugged me.
And after such a long time without that safety, I welcome it with open arms.
Heh...you see what I did there? My arms are literally around Barry?
okay okay...I'll stop.
