Chapter 11 - "He took divide and conquer a little too far"

"You honestly think that someone wants to kill me?" Stagg asks us as I type away on my tablet. After we left the station, Joe, Eddie and I arrived at Stagg industries to question and get any information that we could for the investigation. After a lot of persuading, Joe and I were able to speak to Simon Stagg in one of his warehouses.

"Well, we're not sure, Mr. Stagg," Joe replies. " But... An event you were being honored at was robbed at gunpoint. And your head of security was found murdered this morning."

"I am a scientist and a philanthropist. We're not often the targets of assassins." Stagg responds and I can tell that this isn't going anywhere.

"Well...What about lawsuits? You got about 20 of those pending against you," Joe asks.

"It is a sad fact of life, Detective, that when you earn a lot of money, people who haven't think they can take yours," Stagg says.

"Someone like Danton Black?" I ask. "Records say he was fired from your company and now he's suing you."

Stagg sighs. "Unfortunately, our working relationship wasn't successful, but I can assure you both of one thing. Danton Black... Is not a killer. He's a clinical researcher, not a criminal mastermind. Now, if I can help you in any way, please let me know. I want these people caught as much as you."

"Then here we are!" Multiple voices call from the other side of the warehouse in unison before they pull their guns out simultaneously.

"Get down!" Joe yells and the four of us dive for cover as they start firing at us.

"Get them out of here, I'll cover you," Joe orders Eddie but I brush him off and surprisingly, he nods before getting Stagg out of there.

"Rani you need to get out of here!" Joe says as he fires at the gunman.

"Like hell I am!" I say before throwing a flash of lightning at one of the gunmen. It strikes him right in the chest and he's thrown to the ground.

I sprint to the next aisle of the warehouse as Joe continues to shoot, trying to find something to fight with but instead, finding three more gunmen.

"I remember you," One of them says. "You're that pretty girl from the event."

I clench my jaw and get into a fighting stance. "You're gonna remember more than just my face once I'm done with you. Unless you want to back down."

The one closest to me pulls a gun and points it at the back of my head. "I'll take that as a no."

With the flick of a hand, I swat the gun out of his reach before he can shoot. I throw a kick at his chest and dodge a punch that was heading for my face.

The other two gunmen swarm at me, but with every kick, punch or jab, I dodge, block and retaliate. But it's when they actually start landing some hits that I get worried. One of them throws me against the conveniently placed metal pole and I fall onto it hard.

You know how sometimes when you're doing something and all hope is lost, you start to hear your instructor or teacher's voice in your head, telling you exactly what to do?

I could hear Sarah Lance's and Oliver Queen's voices in my brain, telling me when to slide, punch, duck and tackle. One of the benefits of being trained by the Canary and the Arrow.

I jump on one of the men and use my weight to flip him to the ground, as electricity sparks along my fist. "Lights out," I say, before knocking him out with my charged hand. I hear muffled groans and more punching from one of the other aisle and I'm about to go check it out before a rush of wind and electricity whisks me away.

When the world stops moving I look around and find that I'm outside with Barry, who's leaning heavily on me, extremely battered and bruised.

"Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" Barry pants out as I shift his weight over to the chain link fence.

"It's touching that you care," I tease as he uses his thumb to whip some blood off of a cut on my face. "It was nothing bad, and to be honest I've dealt with worse in Starling. But you need to get back to STAR labs before anyone here notices you. I'll explain when I get there. You think you make it back in one piece?"

He nods before asking, "What about you?"

"Barry for goodness sakes, I'll be fine, now go!" I say and my hands against his chest unknowingly transfer electricity to him, and he speeds off, a little more speed in every step. Once the red blur disappears, I walk back to the warehouse where the police had now gathered.

"Raymond!" Joe calls out. "Where were you?!"

"I took down a couple of gunmen and used the back door to get you," I covered, hoping he wouldn't ask about Barry.

"And Barr?" He asks quietly and I sigh.

"He's okay. I told him to run off before the anyone else got here."

"Go check up on him. I can handle the rest of this." Joe orders and I give him a curious look. "You sure?"

"Just make sure he's okay Rani." He repeats before he starts walking away.

I smile a little, loving the fact that Joe cares so much about Barry, before hitching a ride from Eddie back to the station to run some footage, and then taking my motorcycle back to STAR labs.

"Another not so friendly meta-human." I hear Barry say grimly.

"Not so friendly indeed," I say, making my presence known. "He reminded me how out of shape I am."

Cisco tries his best to hold in a snort as Caitlin glowers at him

"Ms. Raymond," Dr. Wells greets and I smile at them before sitting down on one of the computer chairs as my bruised muscles groan in pain. "Anything on our unknown meta?"

I nod, trying to hold in my grimace of pain as I stretch out to hand him the file. Barry gives me a look of concern but I wave him off. But unfortunately, Caitlin notices my condition and immediately starts worrying over me.

"Danton Black," Dr. Wells says. "He's a bio-geneticist specialized in therapeutic cloning. Growing new organs to replace failing ones."

"I saw Black create duplicates from his own body," Barry says and I my head turns in his direction.

"Took divide and conquer a little too seriously in my opinion," I mutter quietly as Caitlin wraps my shoulder up.

"That's pretty ironic. The guy specialized in cloning and now he can make xeroxes of himself." Cisco adds and Dr. Wells gets a thoughtful look.

"If he was experimenting on himself when he was exposed to the dark matter wave released by the particle accelerator explosion--"

"Meet Captain Clone." Cisco finishes and we all give him a look. "Don't worry, I'll come up with something cooler."

"Wait," I say noticing Barry start to move to the door. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Joe was right. I'm in way over my head." Barry says. "Yeah, I'm fast, but I am no warrior. Man, I could barely fight one meta-human, let alone six."

"Barry. I understand. Today was a setback. But any grand enterprise has them. And we can never learn to fly without crashing a few times."

"This wasn't a grand enterprise." Barry responds. "This was a mistake."

------------------------

"Oliver, this was a mistake. You were right, I can't handle myself out there." I say, wincing as Dig puts an ice pack to my bruise.

"At least you didn't fall down the stairs again," Felicity says, trying to cheer me up and I groan, even more, hiding my face in my hands. "She fell down the stairs again didn't she."

"Not helping." Oliver scolds. "Rani we all make mistakes. And you made plenty of them out there."

"Wow," I say sarcastically. "It's like my ex from college is giving me a pep talk all over again."

"Let me finish. You can learn from a lot of your problems. But the worst one is you doubting yourself. Start believing in what you are capable of, and you'll be the one throwing the punches, not receiving them."

------------------------

I blink, my mind wandering away from that memory to find myself walking out after Barry and calling his name.

"Barry freaking Allen!" I call out and he finally stops. "Not all of us have super speed."

"What's the point of having superpowers if I can't do any good with them!" Barry exclaims, sinking into the bench placed conveniently next to us.

"Barry," I say sitting down next to him. "Look at me. This life that you've chosen to live, it's difficult to manage. And if you lose faith in yourself then good are we? Barry in the short time I've known you, I've seen how big and how loving your heart is and if you believe in yourself Barry, with your abilities there is so much you can do and so many you can help."

Barry almost looks like he's going to cave, but sighs and shakes his head. "Rani, I just don't think I'm the right person for this. I'm sorry." He says, before getting up and speeding away. I sigh and walk back into the cortex as Caitlin waves me over.

"Rani, you have a scientific brain."

"Thank you?" I say, more like a question.

"Please tell me I'm seeing this correctly." She says moving away from her microscope. I peer in, not noticing anything out of the ordinary, just that the muscle cells are rapidly dividing.

"Did you do anything to them?"

"Just a simple gel matrix exposure for the blood cells,"

"Wait, blood cells?" I ask, raising an eyebrow. "I thought they were muscle cells?"

"It's multiplying on itself." Caitlin realizes.

We share a look before I pull the petri dish off of the microscope and put it on the ground as the blob of tissue quickly grows and folds into a fully grown and thankfully clothed Danton Black. The four of us stare at him as he just stares blankly ahead.

"Call Barry, I'll run the brain scan," Caitlin says and I nod, my hand swiping over his contact.

"Look I told you I'm through," Barry's voice says over the phone.

"Believe me, Barry, I know," I say, trying to hold in the urge to punch the clone in the face. "But you need to get to STAR labs. Now."
